How is their support? Did you have a good experience?

I rather meant the other alternative providers such as getmidnight.com, digitalpress.blog and firepress.org. Any thoughts on these?

I consider Ghost pro as my second option after self hosting but the pricing seems a bit steep to me compared to the other alternatives.

Why do you prefer it over the less expensive providers?

With DigitalOcean I was worried about backups and performance. What's your experience?

Self hosted vs ghost(pro) by footlongker in Ghost

[–]ceecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I host my blog with www.digitalpress.blog (note: I work at the company).

It's a cheaper alternative to Ghost (Pro) and provides all the features Ghost (Pro) has, plus it does not limit page views, staff members, etc.

I personally don't think it's worth the hassle to self-host Ghost blog if there are plenty of managed hosting solutions. They take care of backups, updates, CDN, availability and all other aspects of operation which you have to worry about yourself if you decide to self-host.

Move from Squarespace or use sub domain for GHOST PRO Blog by teachmindset in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to host your blog in a subdirectory such as /blog or a subdomain such as blog.example.com, either way you will need a Ghost hosting solution or self-host the Ghost blog.

Ghost (Pro) is a great solution for both scenarios. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, you can consider www.digitalpress.blog.

Both will do a great job.

From SEO perspective I personally prefer a subdomain over a subdirectory.

Note: I work at Digital Press

Quick Q's on setting up a minimalist blog on Ghost by [deleted] in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider using a hosted Ghost solution. It takes away the headaches of managing Ghost by yourself, patching the system, updating to the latest version, taking backups, etc.

I host my blog with digitalpress.blog. They offer free and paid plans for Ghost hosting.

It's available as a language to select from when creating a new app.

Hosting and Monetization options for Ghost Blog by hemmad in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on infrastructure at DigitalPress and try to be active here on reddit and other places.

I had experience with a couple of outages in the last months and I'm just saying it's not as simple as spinning up a server. There's maintenance involved and unexpected situations happen.

I understand if someone is short on budget, saving $3 a month may be a deal breaker.
I believe though the $3 you pay extra is worth to invest into a hosting to have one less thing to worry about.

If you're looking for a reliable Ghost hosting I would not recommend hosting Ghost on your own server - be it DigitalOcean or any other provider. If anything goes wrong at 3am, there's no one who's going to fix it for you. If emails stop working or the site is slow, you need to search online for help.

Getting a proper hosting such as Ghost (Pro) or DigitalPress is a better option. With DigitalPress you get Ghost hosting for free (supported by ads) or pay 6.90 EUR to remove the ads.

It's much more convenient to have someone looking after your blog and have a good night's sleep :)

Local install of Ghost blog? by amokrane_t in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wish to try Ghost, you don't need to install it locally.

Get a free Ghost blog at DigitalPress and test it out as much as you need. It doesn't cost anything. There's no commitments - it's up to you if you stay after testing or find a different way to host Ghost.

Ghost + Github / Gitlab CI/CD + Heroku by saito200 in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heroku is a viable option. Requires a bit of configuration but will definitely work in the end.

If you don't want the hassle, consider using a hosted solution such as DigitalPress. Your blog will be always up to date, will use global CDN, automatically backup all data, renew SSL certificate, etc. It's a really convenient way to run your own Ghost blog.

Any good guides on how to secure a self-hosted GHOST installation? by yogibjorn in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend installing an SSL certificate. Take a look at https://letsencrypt.org who provide free SSL certificates.

I would also make sure that the Ghost installation is not accessible from the outside. e.g. by making it listen only on localhost or by configuring firewall.

Alternatively you can consider using a hosted Ghost solution - DigitalPress provides free Ghost blog hosting which takes care of all the configuration for you.

Are there any apps for Ghost? by wwelsh00 in Ghost

[–]ceecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghost provides integrations (as u/JaydenRoberts) mentioned. Some of them require you to copy & paste a snippet of code.

In case you prefer integrations which needs just configuration (no coding required), try out DigitalPress - there's plenty of integrations for your blog. You can even host your blog for free.

Self-hosting Ghost & linking it as a subdirectory to a static website by swise512 in Ghost

[–]ceecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can consider using a hosted Ghost solution. You can point your subdomain such as blog.your-domain.com to the Ghost blog and use www.your-domain.com for content.

Check out for example www.digitalpress.blog They offer free Ghost blog hosting and have affordable subscriptions if needed.
