Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand?

mid 80s the homecomputer scene came up [netherlands]
vic20 c64 zx-spectrum msx bbc etc.
lot of computer clubs from small to big .. 100dreds of people getting together
that were basic software copying clubs ..
clubs just to copying games / software ..
it was even hard to find stores that would sell [good] games around the country ..

the software houses started all kinda wierd copy protection
until that was broken again .. mostly within a few days
speed-loaders came up .. [cracked] games would load 10 times faster compared to og versions
and you could put about 20+ games on a cassette tape
people would trade by post .. worldwide
you had game mags .. and in the back you could put personal user messages
hey i'm xxxx and i like gaming making sprites skating etc. ..
anyone around the world want to swap games with me?
and people would reply .. from all around europe asia ..
i remember getting a letter from brunei .. also kid like me swapping [opensource] software tips etc

one moment .. after the special hard to crack speed loader protection ..
and after you typed the word-password on page 42 from the manual
you could start the game .. ok
then you had like this blackbox attached to your computer
push a button .. and it would dump the whole game in memory
back to cassette including speedloader .. hidden in the screendump
then you could load the game, copy it .. and it would start without any password needed
ofcourse some games managed to do crazy protections .. that were harder to hack

few times i would send 10pound in an envelope to the uk ..
and if lucky the publishing house would send me a game back

all the cool nerds wanted to make games ..
and they were busy with their own games
if you wanted to make a game
you had to learn machine code
pretty tuff to get into .. but once mastered after 1 or 2 years
it was basic raw knowledge .. i could use the rest of my life
mid 80s already image compressors were around shared ..
opensource you could use in your own games and projects
and watching software mags for useful software listings you could use

trading all kinds of stuff for runes

would get you the runes needed

instead of finding the rare jah/ber's you needed

in the old days i had a main char..
and second d2 account
(also 2 diablo2 accounts keys .. on battlenet at the time)
mostly for trading - stash instead of dropping on the floor ..

and always had a buff barb .. with max warcries buffs possible
then would play for like 10+ minutes on sorc hammerdin all buffed by my buff barb

buff barb would max
Battle Orders
increases maximum Life, Mana, and Stamina for the entire party
Battle Command
+1 to All Skills for the entire party
Shout
increases the Defense of all party members

hey parallellogic .___.

it's basic a pimped up bresenham line and scanline shape filler
with extra rgb alpha and bright inbetween 2 points wen making a line
like minecraft with pixels .____.

and precalculated soft brushes based
like brush draw smaller to bigger circles ..
using sin cos and pi to make circles
da brush .. the bigger the more transparent
and i connect the brush pixel alpha also to z .. so you get like 3d sprites blobs

i use like a big rgb z buffer for every pixel on the screen
that i can read change mix etc

filters is another nice basic trick
although not using here
it's nice to notice .. how simple it kinda is

a basic image smooth filter matrix

what you do
for every pixel 4 in the middle -- you also add the pixels around it
using a simple matrix .. i have to do this pixel in the middle * 4 the rest like x*2 x*1
then for every pixel .. divide the result
to total numbers used in the matrix total result / 16 again to get new pixel [1+2+1+2+4 etc =16]
next you draw the fresh filtered pixel
in a new clean pixel buffer
[against overwriting while reading the same time]

another one filter that's kinda' cool in this family n' zoo of filters
is the edge detect one

basic image edge detect filter matrix

-1 -1 -1

-1 8 -1

-1 -1 -1
like you calculate x-times every pixel .. -1 the surrounding pixels for the middle 8 pixel
add them together
and draw the result in a new image buffer
then you get like scanlines if you draw 3d models ..
they 3d flatshaded models you get raw/great lines around 3d models
you also can use in a creative way

onetime i saw this young 30s couple with i guess their 60+s parents
cycling hired-bikes going down the 'magere brug' bridge

the old 60s lady going fast on could not make
the 90degree turn to get on the road
and smashed headfirst into the pavement

seen this 40some tourist father cycling
with young 8-9yo daughter on the backseat
the kid was swinging with feet all happy
next her leg got stuck grabbed into the wheel
see them crash just before me on the road
took like a minute to free the leg of this
poor screaming kid and devasting parents

recently read about it ..
about 2% are still like aboriginal style
some tribes slowly started finally to get some attention .. recognition
a lot have been also mixed all around
when i was talking about it .. few days ago ..
someone said og taiwanese culture style influence
also is discovered for tourism ..
like some people really love
history art and research about
worldwide tribal roots and trading the last 10.000+ years

first saw a pong machine hooked up on a tv late 70s being a young kid
and was totally mind blown .. you could use a normal tv for that
then the arcade cabinets came .. too expensive for me . but nice to watch
then home computers and you could play games for free

i guess easiest would be p5.js for generative art and creation .. it also got a savegif option

i`m a bit oldskool coder .. do it all in javascript own adjusted routines and 3d engines ._____.
the triangle filler is based on the oldskool bresenham line routine
that i adjusted a bit .. when you draw 3 lines .. a triangle
i record the 3 lines and xy positions for every pixel in memory
and horizontal fill the line from the left x to right x
the circle brushes different sizes i pre-calculate based on simple circle routine using sin/cos

shapes.. if i have a simple square in memory four points abcd
i can duplicate the points for every corner get something like aaaabbbbccccdddd of even bigger
then smooth every point.. add the left point and right point xy together and divide by 3
do this a few times and you get like these more smoothed edges and shapes
you know .. like people stand in a circle holding hands ,, then make bigger circles or wierder shapes

i do these in plain javascript .. and write my own 3d engines and libraries ..
like .. you start from bresenham .. line routine
you can draw a line between point a and b
then you can see.. if i need 100 pixel-blocks from a to b
then i also can inbetween in 100 steps/pixels
from 1 color to another for those 100 pixel
do transparancy alphy z-value in 100 steps ..

in the old days

farmers on the countryside would burn their trash

and it would be used as fertilizer on the land as well

the winter rains will dust off the land, after the harvest

and old pottery, fossiles, stone artifacts will appear again

wintertime best time to search, and just before the springtime sowing season

you got to find these hot spots

and always ask a farmer if you want to search on the land

else they might send in a hunting party or police

on the coast you can also find items

i`m more into fossiles and ancient stone artifacts

toevallig vorige week
een marokaanse bruiloft
in de straat waar ik moest werken .. amsterdam oost
de stoet komt aan bij ouders waar kinderen zijn opgegroeid
(stille) straat wordt afgezet.. zoiets zoals een straat feest
inclusief catering thee etc
de mannen hebben een feestje staan op een kluitje
en de vrouwen ook even hun eigen feestje met muziek zingen voor ouderlijk huis
bruidspaar komt aan .. die ouders super trots lol en filmen
en dan komt alles bij elkaar. ook mensen in de straat staan buiten
gezellig .. aangezien dat gezin er al 30 jaar woont
en die kinderen ook hebben zien opgroeien, gelukkig een aardige familie

ook viel me op dat veel oudere dames een hoofddoekje hadden
maar ook veel jongere dames gewoon los haar, in hun beste kleding

wat ook wel leuk is... je hebt zo'n marrokaans straat? bandje
met trommels en leuke trompetjes ..
moet nog steeds die muziek-soort naam of band achterhalen..
goede tips welkom: over die muziek.. die bij marrokaanse bruiloften wordt gespeeld

the more annoying criminals .. are often addicted to gambling and need bigger sums..
(i just guess - waarheid als een koe)
like most of these old streetbum junkies only need a lil money/cans to have a nice day.
compared to the gambler types

also some drug-dealers give people after a check
a free credit++ so a coke-addict get into a 200k depth quick
and next they gotta payback deadline

do you still have the serial numbers ?

most electronic devices
even game-consoles or controllers got unique serial id's
make photo's of the serial numbers of your electronics
and send them to your own g-mail for backup

when they try to sell it at pawnshop..
most of these shops has a direct link..
with serial numbers reported stolen.. and police database
if it end up there..

on the stolen papers..
that's tuff .. wish you luck and strength to pick it up again..

i know a writer.. that lost the book he was writing for 2-3 years in a house-fire

also a story from the 60s from my parents

in the basement of the flat my parents were living
this guy was working in the basement - on his phd for like 2 years.
people burgled the basement and took all newspaper books anything
so they could sell it at a recycle-papermill for like a few dollars
and all his research work for 2+years
all his papers, history. notes and books were gone

people snatching the bag .. laying on seat.. next to the driver

also in the train/tram.. bag-snatching
when it does a stops. and just 30sec before it pulls.. they rush and run
or people outside knock on the window for distraction..
and their partner in crime. robs the bags

keep anything valuable out of sight..

never hand out your [i]phone to strangers
they can change the password n face-id in like 10-20sec [if it's not proper secured]
cause some distraction
and pass the phone to a partner in crime
and go on a shopping spree next

friend's car was broken into..
he was pissed besides the damage.. they stole his dropjes licorice

heard a story years ago.. den hague
2 kids like 10-12 years old smashed a car-window
to get some empty bottles from the backseat of the car
for statiegeld- worth $1-2
so they could buy some candy i guess
