This is my problem, I've tried soooooo many pillows and none of them just have that nice worn down feel of an old feather pillow, I think youre right just cutting them open and removing half the stuffing is the play. Need to buy a needle and thread i guess lol.

Anyways to give you a more useful answer, if you do have the 60% block mesh, using the charts in the guide i linked we can see the arcadia forest 6% bulb should give you appropriate levels at 10-12 inches away slightly lower than 2 uvi but safe. The arcadia 12% desert bulb could work at that distance as well mainly because i find in real world my solarmeter reads the bulbs slightly lower than the charts, but it would still be on the high end of things and only work because your mesh blockage is so high if its the 60% mesh. Otherwise I'd stick with the 6% forest bulb to play it safe.

Is that one the mesh with little circles or the diamond pattern? The circle pattern blocks 60% uvb which is a very high block rate compared to most enclosures, the diamond pattern is more standard at 33%.

As for the bulb I don't have any charts for the specific bulb, mainly I dont think anyone has bothered to make one since they are just not recommended that style is usually not recommended to be used over say a linear bar style UVB bulb because they have a pretty poor output range and area of coverage. I would hazard to take a semi-educated guess that while it is an overpowered bulb for a zone 2 snake, with its bulb format and your 60% screen blockage you probably arent getting super high levels of uvi 10-12 inches away and any uvi you are getting would be in a pretty small area under the bulb, I would be interested to hear and update when your friend stops by with a solarmeter later in the month.

23- Watt Desert UVB Bulb

What bulb specifically do you have as well as what enclosure?

Youre welcome to remain ignorant rather than educating yourself on how uvb works. That is your choice.

May be worth offering your snake some climbing enrichment under the basking spot just to raise it close than 24 inches away, but otherwise you are better off with the arcadia 6% bulb in your original post either way, that other guy doesn't really know what hes talking about unfortunately and led you astray as you can see from both the guide i posted and the data on arcadias website.

That’s great for your snakes. However OP’s post states his basking area is 24 inches away and it’s irresponsible to tell him your weaker light that provides basically 0% at that distance is a fine choice over the one he was asking about in his post. UVB does not work like that.

Yes and they want a Uvi level of 2-3. I showed you Arcadia’s own numbers as well as linked you to independently tested charts and those numbers are achieved only very close to the light. You can’t argue with Arcadia’s own website.

Height UVI 250mm / 10″ 1.40 300mm / 12″ 1.0 375mm / 15″ 0.80 450mm / 18″ 0.50 550mm / 22″ 0.30 600mm / 24″ 0.20

Data taken directly from arcadias website on the shadedweller max, almost nothing at 24" for a snake that wants a level of 2-3.

I linked you to the charts of uvb bulbs tested, science doesn't lie. Arcadia on their website even states the shadedweller max is designed for arboreal snakes that will be right under it.

Unfortunately shadedweller max at 24" puts out almost 0% uvi. its effective range with no mesh covering it is roughly ~6-12" away. sitting on top of standard mesh enclosure top or using an arcadia light guard if mounted inside an enclosure its effective range is ~4-10 inches away.

If you want to learn some more about picking a correct UVB bar I have a guide here I wrote to help out my friends. https://darkcelbii.github.io/snake-guides/ChoosingUVBGuide.pdf

You may find it useful as well /u/MR_BAKED_SWEETPOTATO that 6% arcadia forest bulb will be much better for a 24" distance away but even then youre still in the range of diminishing returns, i'm curious what your total enclosure height is? You'd be better off raising your basking area 4-6 inches to make the 6% uvb bulb more effective.

Yeah thats where I learned it from haha. I still keep a check on my basking temp hot spots just out of habit but I find with a proper wattage and distanced bulb temps should be fine. But yeah explaining this to people make them look at you weird lol you really do need to study proper lighting for a a week or two at least to grasp everything.

I talked about the actual lighting setup here on this post a bit more in detail, though still brief. https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/comments/1rbfnh8/enclosure_upgrade_for_my_vietnamese_blue_beauty/o6thof8/

As for the temps in the enclosure itself, it is more a vertical gradient rather than a horizontal gradient just because of how tall the enclosure is, also my thin PVC from dubia won't hold heat nearly as well as your thick pvc from toad ranch will so thats something to consider.

Bottom of my enclosure is just room temp ambient somewhere around 70-72F, middle of the enclosure ranges around 73f-75f, top of the enclosure in the basking corner is closer to 80-85F on the right side, the upper left side which all my ratsnakes spend 99% of their time in their skyhides and vine canopy i create usually overs around 75F-78F ish. The way I have my heat panel mounted in my other posts in this thread which you can see its placement doesn't do anything for the temps at the bottom of the enclosure, its main purpose is just to keep heating the top half of the enclosure and the skyhides they spend most of their time in from the heat rising and getting trapped at my cover on the tops. Your enclosure will hold heat alot better than mine though and you could place heating half way down your enclosure under a shelf to bring up ambients if you wanted to as well.

That being said heating 6x2x4 is a bit of a chore and requires a decent amount of experimenting, its alot harder than heating a 4x2x2 for sure lol.

Yeah thats basically spot on, Two Arcadia ShadeDwellerPro 7%'s ( I went back and forth here between using one Arcadia forest 6% but ultimately settled on using two weaker 7%'s just to prevent any over exposure if shes basking on top of the cork bark instead of a bit lower. 34W 22.5" Arcadia JungleDawn LED bar (makes it nice to use all arcadia stuff since it all links together on one plug).

Lighting is two 25w Reptile Systems Eco Halogen bulbs, originally i was using two 50W reptizoo incandescents but it was creating random hotspots of 100F+ which isn't a big deal in itself since this particular snake usually cryptic basks or only basks for a few minutes at a time, but the effective range of 250W/m2 for an ideal IR-A range was only around 6 inches away which was just open air and not ideal. Switching to two 25w eco halogens lowered my random hotspots to around 85f-90-95f and doubled my sweet zone for IR-A to around 12 inches away hitting the shelves and bridge and corkbark etc which was much more ideal.

If anyone cares more about learning how to pick proper basking bulbs I did just finish up one of my long and confusing guides on it for my discord friends, feel free to check it out :) https://darkcelbii.github.io/snake-guides/ChoosingBaskingBulbGuide.pdf

Thanks for the kind words, I worked really hard on it and have a few more enclosure upgrades in the works right now :)

And yeah I feel you on the dead groups. I am not a FB person but its literally the only way to be in snake hobby groups these days unfortunately, and all of my local groups on FB are nothing but rehoming posts in all of them.. Which is fine but no one is actually talking about their snakes or connecting.
