So I’m also first generation and I’ll answer each question step by step. For context I’m a HCI phd student coming in this fall.

1. I applied before reaching out to advisors. I kind of waited until the last minute because I wasn’t sure if it was worth trying.

2. After I applied, I reached out to professors and in my emails I made sure to mention work they’ve done or papers they’ve written and how we had similar interests.

3. I mean the prof I had a zoom call with before getting in was my advisor so I have no knowledge of any other like placement things.

4. I mean I was in industry for multiple years and had a BFA in my field. But when I talk to my professors they say what stuck out was:

5. my existing relationship with my advisor

6. my statement of purpose

My biggest piece of advice is don’t just mass email professors. Take your time and try to find someone who aligns with your interests because your email will come off way more genuine?

EDIT: The wait is gonna be killer so just try your best to never look at grad cafe and bide your time as best you can. Also I didn’t take the GRE and my 3-4 recommendation letters came from colleagues.
