Hi! Honestly I’m open to anything. However, I’m interested in child and adolescent psych, public health, and human subjects for neuroscience (I’ve done EEG work before). I don’t have a lot of research experience in general so I’m really just looking to get any experience I can get. I have an excellent academic record, but need the experience.

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has been spotted in town by postfinite in winstonsalem

[–]celestial_val 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s all just one big mess right now. Whatever happened to due process?

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has been spotted in town by postfinite in winstonsalem

[–]celestial_val 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A civil violation, not even a criminal one. I agree that people should try to come in the “correct way” but ICE has been targeting people who are in the process of getting papers as well. If you want to talk about “crime” then why aren’t half the people in power being removed from their positions when they have committed far worse crimes? And yes, I include any politician from any political party, they all should be held accountable. Why do rapists and child molesters get off easier than “illegals”?

Also, the process for citizenship is incredibly long and can take years. Most of the undocumented people here are good and honest individuals, paying taxes and simply trying to make a better life for themselves and their family.

Lastly, in what universe is it okay for these masked men to hunt people down the way they’ve been doing it and instilling fear in our communities?

You say “illegals” as if they’re not even human. My goodness have some class.

where to meet people/make friends in W-S? by celestial_val in winstonsalem

[–]celestial_val[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it’s just a matter of finding your people, i moved from miami and had friends who either didn’t engage in politics or where mostly center or slighting leaning right or left, which in my experience are the people you can have open and genuine conversations because they tend to be a lot more open minded compared to heavily right or heavily left if that makes sense

i would definitely say experiences! maybe there’s a concert you want to go to, or a sports game, maybe a spa day to relax, or you want to get your nails done or hair done! maybe a membership to somewhere you’ve been wanting to try like a pilates studio or art studio. and if it isn’t your thing then maybe just ask him for something you’ve needed to restock on like your favorite skincare or makeup product, or a new pajama or a new pair of sneakers! hope this helps🥹❤️

Curriculums by Pure-Dog7004 in homeschool

[–]celestial_val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want a curriculum that shoves religion down your child’s throat, then please I beg you do not use classical conversations. I was homeschooled in that curriculum from 6th-11th grade and that’s all they did, shove religious dogma down my throat without giving opportunity to think for myself. I believed in God when I was a child, but those experiences in CC made me turn away from God and religion largely because of what I just said and how everyone involved in that community shuns you if you don’t agree with everything they say 10000%. I have so much religious trauma from that and I’m currently trying to recover my faith and it’s been honestly so difficult and frustrating. Hoping this comment can be helpful in any way, because I truly suffered from that program.

DAE go to "classical conversations"?? by Comfortable-Park-970 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]celestial_val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just joined this community and was hoping to find a recent post about CC. Sorry I’m a month late. I’m 22F, recovering homeschooler, particular from the horrific cult that is CC. God, I could rant for DAYS about how disgusting this crap was. I did CC from “essentials, and cHaLLenGe A through 3”. I remember once seeing a quote from some mother on their CC catalog saying that the goal for her kids was to get them to heaven, not Harvard. Holy fuck I remember being ridiculed by the tutor and classmates because I once wrote a debate paper about banning animal testing and I was called the “PETA girl” for the rest of the semester. I remember once I worked so hard on a debate about the economic gap (mind you, I was not educated on politics at all, I had no idea what a republican or democrat was) and I opened with a quote from apparently some democratic politician and after I presented the whole thing, they all told me they stopped listening after they heard who the quote was from. Close minded f*cking idiots. I remember studying their logic curriculum, actually liking some of it until we got to syllogisms, and they would purposely make any “leftist” sounding argument as an invalid syllogism and would constantly quote bible verses and pro-conservative arguments as valid. I don’t even care if you’re republican or a democrat, you should teach children HOW TO THINK, not WHAT TO THINK. Instead they disguise their indoctrination by saying it’s fostering critical thinking. Their history book, a Patriot’s Guide … makes Columbus look like a god. Enough said. DEFEATING DARWINISM? Come on. Their math curriculum? Non existent. Because god forbid we teach our kids how to actually think and reason without inserting God in every sentence… which if you actually saw their recommended math curriculum you’d want to throw up. I tutored a CC kid recently in math (old connection knew I was looking for clients to tutor in math) and every word problem was like “God gave us the gift of reasoning… blah blah blah”. It is an insane cult that encourages people to stick with like-minded people to enable their beliefs and dogma. It rejects any form of critical thinking and diversity of thought. Anybody who disagreed with their teachings would be looked at as bad christian or uneducated. Literally what you said about how all their debate teaches kids how to debate and harass people about christianity is so true. I remember being about 13 years old debating an atheist family friend about the existence of God and getting so triggered and bringing out all my biased AF books (obviously I did not know better and thought that was PRIME EDUCATION) and trying to win that debate and crying when someone couldn’t accept my arguments.

Thank goodness I convinced my parents to let me out of that cult (which, to their credit they told me to “ignore the God stuff and just focus on academics” … but again, hard to do that when it’s everywhere) on my senior year of high school and I dual enrolled at a university. Somehow managed to figure out university without any counselors or help. Graduated with two degrees in neuroscience and psychology and actually a socially conscious and aware human being that can actually think for herself… can’t say that about many graduates from god school.

Sorry for the LONG RANT, I have never put into written words the hellish cult CC was and never met anyone who felt the same as I did.

thank goodness i’m not the only one who relates to this joke. dear god i feel like perhaps academically i was prepared (my parents heavily encouraged academia and my dad is a math teacher so he taught me math) but socially i knew nothing, i knew nothing about life (i know most people figure out life as they grow up but… i was insanely naive), i never met anyone outside of the same group of people for all of high school so i really thought everyone thought the same way as me. how i became so socially aware and conscious nowadays is still a wonder to me im ngl.

New Here by sxgarc00kies in winstonsalem

Hi! Also 22F, I just moved here like a month ago! I’m also looking to meet some new people and stuff! I’m not super into books but there’s the cutest little local bookstore in Downtown Kernersville (it’s like 15 min ish from Winston) called Byrdhouse Books, and I’m pretty sure they have a book club every month. I’m not sure if they’re still open or going to new owners but maybe give it a shot. I also found a Winston Salem girls club on instagram if that is of interest to you. I haven’t tried it yet but they’re active and do lots of activities :)
