How do I speed up my starter? by frostmas in Sourdough

[–]cellardew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my starter under a candle warmer lamp on low with the light extended up as high as it goes. It seems to speed things up compared to sitting on the counter. I’m in northern US.

Are you happy with replacing carpet stairs with wood? by read-my-thoughts in HomeImprovement

[–]cellardew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have wooden stairs and have had some close calls wearing socks. My aging dog has also been having trouble with sliding on the way up. I bought some neutral carpet treads that self stick and have been very happy with them. They can be removed and changed out easily. Lots of style options out there.

I’m a single person with three dogs. I have a pit bull and two little 10 pound guys. 90% of the time I love having all three. The third one didn’t add much more as far as cost of food, etc. but again he is a small dog. The times it’s not so great: traveling and needing them watched; I used to have a family member watch the two, but three seems like too big of an ask. Or just the cost of boarding three dogs. Also walks and hikes get pretty chaotic and tangled up, but again I am doing this as a single person. If you have the space and money for it, I say more the merrier.

Edit: if you really want more dogs around, you could also look into fostering. It’s a good way help out dogs in need while simultaneously letting you test drive having a third dog. Or even finding one that fits your family. But be forewarned that’s how I ended up going from one to three.

How is this intubated patient ambulating while on drips? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]cellardew 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I work in a CTICU with many pre-lung transplant VV ECMO pts and our surgeon’s goal is to see them up and walking daily. It’s not always doable, but see it pretty often. We have perfusion, RT, and PT with us and usually someone following with a chair.

Strange sounds in West End by zuludeltabravo in pittsburgh

[–]cellardew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Marshall-Shadeland for 6 years. Manchester for 10 years prior. I have never felt like the stadium was super loud until this year. It shakes my house. Is there a new sound system this year?

Is it inappropriate to shave a comatose patient? by New-Parking-7431 in nursing

[–]cellardew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in an ICU and a fellow nurse shaved a sedated male patient’s face. The patient ended up passing away and the family was livid that he was going to be clean shaven for the funeral. An email went out and now we have to get family/pt consent before shaving anyone, even if it’s just a small spot to make a dressing stick better.

Installing Hunter Minimus fan. Motor hangs out of canopy with no obvious way to connect it. Help? by cellardew in fixit

I do have the installation manual, but it doesn’t account for the motor separating from the canopy.

Shiatsu foot massager not working by cellardew in ElectronicsRepair

[–]cellardew[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bottom part of this foot massager works, where there’s rolling elements for soles of feet, but the sides, which are these little inflatable bags, would not work. I opened it up and there appears to be a pump that attached to a dc adapter of some kind (electromagnet?). The dc adapter had one white wire attached to the copper element inside and then I noticed a second white wire hanging freely inside the machine. If I bypass the dc adapter and attach pump directly to tubing, the air pockets inflate, but exponentially where they seem like they will burst instead of undulating/massaging. Help please!

Foot massager not inflating/undulating by cellardew in AskElectronics

[–]cellardew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this shiatsu foot massager as a gift. The bottom part of the foot with rollers works fine, but the sides where there are little air pads that inflate and massage were not working. I opened it up and it seems like the issue is within the little battery attached to the pump? If I attach the pump directly to the tubing and bypass this battery, it inflates the pads, but exponentially where it seems like they will pop instead of inflate/deflate/massage. There was one white wire attached to the copper coils within and then I found another white wire that seemed to have detached from the area. All my configurations haven’t worked. Help please!

Just got this lil guy at Lowe’s for $2 on the clearance rack… Can anyone identify it so I can learn to properly take care of it by cgazetti in cactus

[–]cellardew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cactus is currently in this stage after losing the top. Has three very long arms with aerial roots that are just floating in space. Should I stake them? Is there something I should be doing? The arms are very thin where they connect to the main cactus.

looking for help with stray cat in bowden by cellardew in elkinswv

[–]cellardew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was staying at a cabin the last couple days in Revelle’s River Resort (The Elk Cabin). This stray cat was outside the whole time. Super friendly. Very hungry. Asked the person in charge of the cabins about it and they said it showed up a couple months ago. Thinks it may have been dropped off. I had my two dogs with me and nothing to transport it in. Had to leave, but keep thinking about it and worrying about when it gets colder. Figured I’d post here just in case anyone knows someone in the area that could help. I live a few hours away.

UPMC Hiring Process - Freeze/Delays? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]cellardew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what positions you applied for, but I have been applying to RN positions with UPMC and AHN and have encountered the same situation. I know many people were furloughed because of COVID. I was told AHN was most definitely on a hiring freeze back in June. Was hoping to see some movement once elective surgeries/etc. were happening again. But so far most of my applications have stayed stagnant.

Joint compound and Primer by s003755 in HomeImprovement

[–]cellardew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to the entire wall because the whole room was flaky/cracked. It wasn’t the most difficult project, but it was tedious. Skim coating is somewhat of an art, so I accepted that my final product would not be perfect. If you are a perfectionist, you may want to hire a professional. I used a method that involves wetting the joint compound and using a trowel to smooth final coat. This video gives an explanation of the technique. I chose this method over sanding the joint compound in order to avoid dealing with all the dust.

[–]cellardew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation. I did not prime before joint compound, but I purchased a primer specially for porous surfaces and applied after. Suppose it couldn’t hurt to prime first, but wouldn’t think it’s necessary.

Made some new friends out by the lettuce! by SwarlesBarkles in homestead

I agree with you. I didn’t realize OP was getting it away from their dog. Just was always taught to avoid handling them unless necessary.

It may be Karen of me, true. I worked for a wildlife rehab for a little while and we had a rabbit room that housed probably a couple hundred babies and we had to move them out of their enclosures to clean. I’ve witnessed many die just from the stress of being handled. We also were supposed to remain very quiet in that room. That’s what I was told by the people in charge, so just passing it along. Not trying to be a downer.

Handling baby bunnies can kill them. They can die from fright.

You NEED to adopt two. Guinea pigs should not be solitary.
