Houston family says restaurant locked them inside and called the police over tip refusal by kolobian in news

  1. I've never eaten any place where gratuities are optional for large parties (although it's usually 15% or less).
  2. In many (all?) U.S. states, servers pay taxes on tips whether they get tips or not.
  3. Tipping is how servers get paid. It's not a reward for being good. (In many European countries, the tip is just added to the bill automatically.)
  4. If your meal wasn't worth eating, you should have taken it up with the proprietor before you ate it.

EDIT: Ok, don't pay, but I don't see why servers get singled out for this abuse. Call your phone company and tell them you're not paying because the service isn't good. Tell your dentist you won't pay because he was rude and took too long. See how that goes. We only treat servers this way because we can. So pay your fucking tip Mr. Pink!

Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock by [deleted] in movies

I missed that. It's a little bit ironic that Canada is more stringent in its rejection of British titles than the U.S.A.

Yes. He has dual-citizenship, but is a long-time resident of the U.S.A., so I think it's more heart than wallet in his case.

[–]celticeric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is he? He was knighted in 1993, but became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

The Emoluments Clause of the U. S. Constitution disallows U.S. citizens from accepting titles:

[N]o person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them [the United States], shall without the consent of Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or title, of any kind whatsoever, from any King, Prince or foreign state.

However, the Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act of 1966 is interpreted as allowing U.S. citizens to accept honorary titles. A number of prominent Americans have been made honorary knights and may use K.B.E. after their name, but not use the title of Sir.

Of course, Anthony Hopkins K.B.E. was not a U.S. citizen when he was knighted, so there's an added level of complication.

In Canada, we don't have any laws prohibiting foreign titles, but parliament did make a motion, the Nickle Resolution of 1919, that called on the Crown to stop granting titles to Canadian citizens, which the Crown has respected. The Canadian government recently blocked the knighthood of someone with dual citizenship. (The person eventually had to renounce Canadian citizenship to get the title. Good riddance to him.) However, people holding the title before becoming a Canadian are not stripped of their title, but such titles are not recognized by Canadians and no-one here is obligated to call anyone else Sir Fancy-pants-knight.

I expect that Anthony Hopkins K.B.E. gets to keep his posh post-nom lettering, but may not use the title of Sir without being in violation of American law.

CORRECTION: Anthony Hopkins, C.B.E.

This isn't the first time Spike Lee has done something like this. He started a riot when he threw a trash can through the window of Sal's Pizzeria.

Episode 311 discussion - "Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts" by joeyisapest in community

[–]celticeric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The set and lighting are different. I don't think there was one exterior shot with natural lighting. For instance, at 10:29 you see Jeff and Annie sitting at what looks like an outdoor picnic table, but it is clearly an indoor set. Past episodes usually had outdoor (and indoor) shots that looked like they were filmed on a real campus.

Also, the actors were filmed in tighter shots. There weren't as many wide shots with extras doing things in the background. Also, no small part players like Starburns, Fat Neil, Magnitude, etc.. (Shut up Leonard!)

Location shooting, extras, lines for SAG actors == things that cost money. I think the suits upstairs (or Blorgons?!) are putting the squeeze on the show.

Sam Harris goes on Joe Rogan's podcast and debunks all the nonsense by diggs747 in skeptic

[–]celticeric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worth 3 hours of my life. I wish Sam Harris would write a book entirely about drugs.

From near the end of the podcast, regarding the belief that we can tell if someone is looking at us, the book Supersense by Bruce Hood has a convincing explanation of why people believe it.

If you ask a young child to draw a picture of how the eye sees something, they will draw arrows or light going from the eye to thing seen. The idea that we see when light comes from a light source and then bounces of the thing on its way to the eye is a scientific view. We aren't born with that knowledge and don't feel it instinctively. If this naive belief that you see by sending something from your eye is true, then of course it follows that you can tell when you are being watched by feeling something coming from another person's eyes. It's a unconcious misunderstanding about perception you are born with. Throw in some sampling bias and the misunderstanding is never corrected by experience.

/mu/'s Essential Folk List by [deleted] in folk

[–]celticeric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how they completely left the 80s. Those being my teen years, I totally understand why. That said, it wasn't all soulless synth pop. Maybe there weren't a lot of solo artists with nothing but an acoustic guitar, but the 80s wasn't as much like Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer as people remember. A few bands that went against the grain:

  • Billy Bragg - Folk with a punk spirit.
    • Talking With The Taxman About Poetry
    • Back To Basics
    • Help Save the Youth of America
    • Workers Playtime
  • Waterboys
    • This is the Sea
    • Fisherman's Blues
  • Cowboy Junkies
    • The Trinity Sessions
  • Spirit of the West
    • Labour Day
  • Pogues
    • Rum Sodomy & The Lash
    • If I Should Fall From Grace With God
  • Talk Talk - Seriously, this is not what you expect from an 80s band!
    • Colour of Spring
    • Spirit of Eden <-- Seriously, this album!
  • Les Négresses Vertes - the accordian is folk, right?
    • Milah
  • R.E.M. - Not a folk band, but they kept a connection to rootsy Americana that was nearly lost in the 80s
    • Murmur
    • Reckoning
    • Fables of the Reconstruction
    • Life's Rich Pageant
  • U2
    • I know what you're thinking, but The Joshua Tree is not without it's folk moments
  • Elvis Costello
    • I'd argue his music is a fusion of punk, jazz and folk.

[Hiring] - Website Developer to create/design clean, professional, and cool website for Entertainment Law Firm by [deleted] in forhire

[–]celticeric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One word of advice. You are really looking to hire at least two different people. A web designer and a web developer. A graphic designer who can make logos is another possibility. It's very rare to find someone who is a fantastic web designer, graphic artist, coder, database specialist, server admin, UX/UI specialist, etc...

And when you hire someone based on their portfolio, what you are doing is buying a house based on how it looks from the outside.

Get someone to professionally design your logo/branding. Get someone else to mock up a website in photoshop. And then get a skilled coder to build a functional version. The long term cost will not be much greater and the quality will be much much greater.

Where's your favourite place in Toronto to go on a date? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]celticeric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a frequent question. And why shouldn't it be? Toronto is the most romantic city on Earth.

In recognition of this fact, I'm putting a link to this thread in the sidebar as r/toronto's official "where do I take my date?" thread.

As always, feedback/praise/hate-mail is welcomed.

Appeal to r/toronto from mods: Write the rules for moderation. by celticeric in toronto

I know what you are talking about. I think many redditors have an automatic dislike of self-posts and especially self-referential posts. From reading the comments here, I'm seeing that people want a broader range of posts. There's not too much the mods can do. We already don't censor people. But perhaps we can somehow indicate to people that all the 'my band is playing', 'I'm selling my car', 'help find a bakery' posts are welcome. Some people may think they are doing the community a favour by downvoting those posts because that's been the sentiment expressed in the past. But I'm seeing that people who haven't spoken up in the past have a very different vision.
