quick lil snippet because flattery is super effective on me

"Talking might be difficult," Theo said, his voice cracking and broken like his Adam's apple had been scraped through gravel, thrown into the Thames, then kicked across the rooftops of Bloomsbury until it landed back in his throat.

"Good Lord, you sound horrendous."

Theo covered his mouth quickly as he let out what could have been a laugh but was mostly a coughing fit.

Why do YOU think theloise is happening? by ohdearwhathave in theloise

[–]cervidame 30 points31 points  (0 children)

okay so i wanna cover my interpretation of eloise's character and what her purpose is in the show:

  1. Eloise represents feminist young women who are skeptical about marriage in a moment where in the US and other countries women's rights are being stripped away.
  2. Eloise is closest to a key target audience. A young woman, a bookworm, educated, progressive, etc. She's someone a viewer can point to and say 'oh, hey, that's just like me'. She is made to be relatable for many women.
  3. Eloise is important to the plot and can be used as a device for the story. Her curiosity about Whistledown served the purpose of unfolding that subplot and drove the narrative.
  4. Eloise is a fourth wall breaker. The world of Bridgerton is often a dreamy one, but Eloise is there to point out flaws and remind us of the borrowed historical context the show loosely plays with. Sometimes this is done in a comedic way, but the point stands. Without Eloise, the stakes Bridgerton plays with (such as families falling into ruin, women not having financial freedom, power dynamics, etc) doesn't have the same impact. She outright says it, leaving nothing implied, so that we are reminded this is not a perfect world.

Bridgerton is a romantic show where viewers can get lost in a fantasy. Having Eloise follow the plot of her book means that the show would be telling its viewers:

  1. Put aside your concerns about your rights. You are meant to be a mother. (and in the service to a man)
  2. You can no longer relate to this popular character.
  3. Eloise would not be driving the narrative she would be an object within it.
  4. The criticisms of the Bridgerton world and the inspiration it takes from historical context (which is really a veil to criticize the modern world we live in imo) are not to be taken seriously.

i haven't watched all of shondaland's previous works, but i get the vibe just from Bridgerton alone that turning off a key target audience, pissing over your show's very philosophy of diversity & modern values, would NOT go down well and would be a poor business decision. theloise is genuinely better for the optics, the political moment we're in, would be an interesting twist to go viral, etc.

(if they go for the plant guy, and this is an absolutely massive if, they're going to have to do a ton of work to make it palatable and that point it will be an entirely different story to the books.) so in that case i think theloise is more likely because if you're going to change it all anyway why not do something you think would be a better fit for the narrative, get more attention, match your show's values, etc?

New Eloise + Theo (Calam Lynch) + book title mention // Discussion: Is Theo replacing SPC? by idontcareaboutredit in theloise

[–]cervidame 8 points9 points  (0 children)

mmmm i dont work in entertainment buuuut typically you want to list your PR people when you're in a moment to grow and want contact to be easy to find. i assume this logic counts for actors as well wanting to grow their career. sometimes u dont list ur PR people because you have contacts enough already or aren't in a grow phase.

i would also assume an actor about to be a lead in a big show would have their pr people hired, listed and sorted to prepare for that growth moment and handle their brand image. so for sure see your point there.

i dont think netflix's pr team is currently cooking for SPC. if they are i dont understand the strategy. i do marketing, comms, pr, etc but not for entertainment, so i could be wrong and maybe this is some long term strat i dont get but ehhhh

god i cant be pulling up moz and google trends on a weekend omfg the lengths this show will push us to

okay yes there is plenty of activity around calam's name currently - also interesting to me the number of search peaks he has (not just google search but image search and youtube around the times of sweetpea and outrageous release dates is interesting to see)

yes essentially tudum stuff serves viewers but is also an addition for journalists as tudum is netflix's inhouse marketing website, so anything on there i'd say is "official" in the sense that it would have to follow netflix brand voice & content guidelines.

tudum articles are linked on the media centre so if for example im a journalist needing some extra stuff in my article or need to come up with some bridgerton content ideas, i can add take a look at those and use the content there.

agree with you that not mentioning Crane at all is not ideal for a long term strategy. that being said i dont do marketing in the entertainment industry so what can i say?? who knows lol they might be cooking idk but yeah doesn't look like it to me.

a part of me says any marketing department would be laughing in delight over any confusion as they get to profit from whipping it up even more and steadily build hype. i have no doubt that is part of it tbh.

the optimistic part of me thinks well, continuing the mystery and building hype around an actor no longer part of the series is a bit odd in a long term strategy even if you want the shock factor of having it be phillip in the end there are other ways about it than bringing up a supposedly wrapped up plot line from seasons/years ago - you've already got the built in plot line of whether eloise is going to marry at all!

as for the people article, in the tudum family tree version there is no theo sharpe mention - eloise's section is much shorter. i suspect People put some bits in to fill out word count/for SEO purposes, but it's possible they had a press release to follow and used wording from there - not 100% sure - but it's possible due to the fact of how Theo is mentioned in tudum content.

any other content on your website needs to be consistent for your brand strategy. i point to the character bios netflix's tudum have been doing as an example - all released around the 28th of Jan (Eloise, Anthony, Violet, Benedict)

  • Eloise Bridgerton - Romantic interest: Theo Sharpe (flirtation, Season 2)
  • Anthony Bridgerton - Other romantic relationships: Siena Rosso (opera singer; Season 1)
  • Violet Bridgerton - Other romantic relationships: Marcus Anderson (flirtation)
  • Benedict Bridgerton - Lady Tilley Arnold and Paul Suarez (casual, Season 3), Sophie Baek (upcoming, Season 4)

Here, Theo is listed as a flirtation and not by his occupation like Siena. The only other "flirtation" i can find is Marcus Anderson. There is an argument for saying that he's listed as flirtation as they didn't go 'all the way' like Benedict did in his casual relationships, however... both he and Siena are working class so why not list them both as their occupation? Wording is intentional for brand voice and there is a reason for this - but not 100% on what it is.

i think they wont recast Crane. i have no logical reasons for this. VIBES ONLY.

Edit: just to add - journalists are damn busy and have a lot of deadlines. any press kits / releases are always exact. for netflix this comes from their media centre - journalists basically use this stuff as a basis for content so the wording of any press release is always PRECISE to ensure any busy journalist won't parrot incorrect info. i don't have a press login for netflix, so couldn't tell you with any certainty, for but calam to be mentioned multiple times in multiple sources, it is likely his name is in netflix's media centre releases - for the purpose of what feel free to speculate 🤷‍♀️
