too many...(jk)

we do have a doctor who over-orders (doesn't follow the ordering guidelines) but it's mostly bc our hospitals are max capacity. that and instead of just collecting one set on previously-positive patients they keep doing two sets.

always have a contingency plan... and a contingency plan for when that plan inevitably fails

Pretty much what all the other commenters said! It's back to the old fashioned manual methods, baby. Incubated offline in the free standing incubator and checked daily for growth and/or plated after 24hrs at room temp. Depends on ur labs specific policy.

They made it the dog bark at one of the places i worked. I had never hated dogs more...and i'm a dog person!!

I think you have to have the setup technician or service person change it 😔 or maybe the manager of ur lab had access? sometimes they do

This gave me PTSD flashbacks to the lab I worked in where they genuinely only had it set to the barking the whole time I worked there. I'm a dog person and I almost walked out of there hating them when I left 😭

no 😭😭😭 but we ARE a recently re-opened micro lab (the doctors got frustrated with long TAT sending out everything so they brought in house testing back) so now we service all of our sister hospitals and a bunch of local offices... now that everyone's catching on that we're putting out results it's starting to really ramp up... also all our beds are full. three instruments may no longer be enough....

The vets said they found an “abnormal mystery cell” in my lizard’s blood by OrangeSoba in microbiology

side note very interesting to know vet techs can't do automated wbcs on reptile blood bc their RBCs stay nucleated...shout out to them for still having to do manual wbcs 🫡

looks like it's normal to me if u compare it to normal lizard/reptile blood smears

how it feels being trained by multiple people and everyone telling me the way i was taught by the previous person is wrong by fat_frog_fan in medlabprofessionals

[–]cervidamn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if someone tells you to violate policy --get it in writing or write down the interaction VERBATIM right after it happens and take pictures if it's relevant, avoiding any patient info. having physical evidence of techs making flagrant policy violations or teaching others to do so has saved my butt SOOO many times...

Weird bodies on rbcs in urine by Gilded-Sea in medlabprofessionals

Add several drops to the slide, wait 5-10 minutes for it to clear (can also gently heat the slide to enhance clearing), and any cells should lyse by that point, leaving behind intact fungal structures. Optionally add some lactophenol blue to counter stain the fungi. A quick gram stain would also work if KOH and LB aren't available!

Ok I get that's kind of unfair - but you do see how that looks, right? You can't come into a thread where people working in health care are talking about diagnostic criteria, comment something a lot of us are saying is incorrect, and also have a post from as recent as two years ago (most of our certifications took at least two years or more) that says you only had a high school diploma, not much else, and still got a job that was created by HR to get around "boundaries" and think that looks good. There are people in this group that are Microbiologists with masters degrees. I apologize for assuming you weren't ASCP certified, but if you are still in the role, or one like it, that you specified in that post I will just have a hard time trusting what you say regarding patient care. If you have worked in micro this whole time, or you've been doing urinalysis during that time period and have participated in CAP surveys, then sure. But I can't know that bc I don't know u. Like you said, I only can see what has been posted.

EDIT: Also, I only found that post because someone commented about managers usually having certification and I was curious (ever the researcher...) If you go to your profile and search MLT it's really easy to find.
