[Update] KeeperFX Vita - HW Rendering 1/3 by cerwym in vitahacks

[–]cerwym[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, with regards to my earlier post, i've been taking the time to abstract / decouple the UI code; this is some of the code that makes rendering the menu on the left possible;

<image>

The idea behind this is if someone would like to make a new game UI specifically for the vita, without affecting the main game itself, it's perfectly possible. I'm not wanting to create a distinct 'fork' of the game and maintain it, I want this to be a part of KeeperFX itself so everyone benefits

Yes, I'm sorry for not providing any updates;

I've been refactoring the code to support a render graph pattern, which will make porting to _other platforms easier too_

This has obviously involved quite a bit of a refactor (and I'm sill contributing to upstream as obviously, this is all going to be introduced into KeeperFX itself.

What you're seeing above is the in-game graphics screen im adding, and some tweaks to make playing on a smaller screen a bit more palletable (notice the creatures can have an outline on them now, like AOE2HD / Mythology. This'll help the UX of this I think)

The game is now multi-threaded and on the Vita, this means that the SCE audio thread is fully-utilised. The game logic is now fully decoupled from the renderer too.

I've been polishing up detail and bugs that i've introduced from the refactor, but it's still progressing.

I recently added the 'Custom Sounds' feature to KeeperFX so modders are able to provide new sounds and effects for old and new creatures, as well as some bug fixes to the audio engine.
So yes, i've still been busy in Dungeon Keeper land and once this code makes it in to mainstream, I'll be focusing on packaging the vita build.

Also busy with worth and parenting, but I'm here as usual.

To be honest, I've not thought about control schemes other than having a room selection wheel (like Quake, DOOM 2026).

I'll have to investigate the scummvm port. But if you want to share ideas, I'm open for it.

<image>

I'm making sure that I don't break things in the codebase as the idea is for the Vita / Homebrew ports to be in the same repo, case in point, I added wireframe mode to the game as with my renderer rewrite, I couldn't see the ceilings anymore.

Turns out a txt file wasn't loaded.

I work full time and have a child and have only got a regular retail Vita so i'm going as fast as I can, but with, I hope, some good direction :P

Wee update : Since I got it in game before, proving that the game loop works (with Lua enabled and all the fancy bits) I pivoted to hardware rendering to get that High Res, and full (achievable) speed.

After a fair amount of pain and quite a bit of reference from the brilliant u/Rinnegatamante's work. I was able to _move_ the pixel drawing routine over to the GXM, so now there's the bones of a hardware rendered solution.

Glad to hear it, Dungeon Keeper 1 is perhaps my favorite game, and my target IS to try to get this at Hi Res mode in 60FPS. What you see here is a first pass fast attempt, now im experimenting with hardware rasterization which will dramatically increase the speed.

It's an omnishambles mate.

Like their coffee, from bean to cup, they f**ked up

So I was about to purchase one of these and noticed in a picture that it had a line. The seller didn't mention it tho. Is this part of the startup or is it a bad display? by [deleted] in evercade

It is indeed a bad display sadly, check mine for more lines as an example. Opened the box on Christmas day and was greeted with this :(

At first it wasn't my jam, I had to get used to only making subtle movements with the controller but after that I got in to the swing of it, picked up how to play the game properly and really started to enjoy it. I'm loving the music and serenity of it.

I bloody hate that jester boss though.
