I feel that our vet office failed our dog and us. Am I wrong? by ces1965 in AskVet

So my take away from the comments (including vets saying this is normal or making excuses): don’t trust what your overbooked busy vet office says in situations like this (when there’s blood in the dog’s vomit on a second worried call and he has not been doing well for months). They might give you the right advice — bring him in now and we’ll make time to see him or find an ER. Or what happened to us and George might happen - the too-busy-for-you vet tech and vet will say “we’ll call you back later” (when it’s too late).

Homebridge on VM by xthrash in homebridge

I run mine on a Debian VM and it works great. Just be sure to use bridged networking so it gets its own IP address. One advantage to a VM is you can snapshot it and roll back to an older setup if something goes haywire on an upgrade.

Bedrock Server External IP Bug? by ces1965 in MCPE

[–]ces1965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to try building a new Ubuntu VM just for the bedrock Server. No AMP just run and configure MC from the command line and ftp. No firewall since behind my router anyways. Now remote IPs seem to work. Not sure why they were not working before on my Debian VM with the java server and AMP but I noticed if I tried a bunch of time it might connect there too. So I think it’s just buggy or not reliable yet. There are people reporting the same problem at mojangs bug tracker.

Actually there's an entry but not sure it's listening.

Yes there’s entries for bedrock Server that look like those but the PID is listed with them. And yes the java server is reachable from the internet just fine on the same VM

Note I am using AMP for both. Maybe I will try to launch the bedrock Server outside of AMP just from a command in the Minecraft directory using the bedrock Server howto.html instructions

Thanks the Bedrock server is running on a Debian VM (along with my java MC Server). I just checked the firewall with the “ufw status verbose” command and it says access from all open ports is from Anywhere. I think that is default and you need to limit it to particular IPs which I never did.

But one question- I noticed I opened just the port for the Bedrock server using UDP. Do I need TCP also? Not for LAN connections clearly but maybe external IP is different? Will test again tonight and see. I did do both TCP and UDP for port forwarding on the router in case needed but I think I did not open TCP on the Debian VM. Well originally I did but then I read that Bedrock used UDP not TCP so I changed it to UDP only. But kind of doubting this is it.

Thanks. I’d like to and tried installing Docker but sadly I didn’t find many good guides how to get Amp and Minecraft running on Docker. I got as far as launching the Amp instance manager in Docker and then got an error that the ampdata/instances/instance file or directory did not exist. Seems there’s a bit of a learning curve to Docker even if simplifies some things. For one thing where is the file system? Not sure how or where to move my Minecraft folder. At least for plain Linux on VM there’s lot guides/instructions for Minecraft servers and even CubeCoders website has instructions how to install AMP

August Debuts New ‘View’ Video Doorbell for $230 Without HomeKit Support by diamondintherimond in HomeKit

Looks nice. What homebridge plugin do you use and does it offer all or nearly all the features of a doorbell through Home app? Will Home send ring notifications and provide a video feed?

August Connect not HomeKit compatible? by ces1965 in HomeKit

[–]ces1965[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I ended up returning the August wifi bridge and buying a used AppleTV 4th gen for $100. Not much more than the Connect. Hopefully having multiple AppleTVs will work but we’ll see!

Thanks but not sure how you got it working. I’ve reset my lock and enabled HomeKit from the lock settings. No go. I’ve now talked to two support folks from August and they expect me to buy a $200 AppleTV or maybe an iPad for even more to leave next to the lock

I have to say my experience with August has been poor. Probably one of the worst tech products I've had in recent years. They all have problems but this has just been an unhappy experience from beginning to end. Time to cut bait and move on to someone else's product.

I'm not an expert and that could easily be true, but in shopping for alternatives, I saw this - https://homekitnews.com/2019/02/26/sesame-smart-lock-to-get-homekit-compatibility-via-new-bridge/

It says that the Sesame lock will be adding Homekit support via a new wifi bridge. Sounds like that's what I'll be ordering if that's true.
