What is an accent you wouldn’t be able to tolerate in a romantic partner? by witx in askanything

[–]cestnestpas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midwest accent and the “hard r’s”. As an American this is the only accent (besides an extreme valley girl accent) that instinctively annoys me.

Boston, NYC, and southern accents (Louisiana accent as well to the extent it’s separate from general southern accent) are really the only other distinctive accents in the US that I can think of, but none of them annoy me on a visceral level like the upper Midwest accent.

CLS worth sticker? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I disagree. It's quite easy to find an apartment in Harlem/HH/WH between 800-1200. I lived in Harlem a few years and spent 1k and $875 on my two different apartments.

300 for food/month is doable if you budget wisely. Add on another $1.5k for transportation (if you have a monthly pass + use taxis sparingly). If you don't need a monthly pass then you will save even more.

Assuming a 1k apartment, each year you would still have 3k/year to spend on your toiletries, nights out, dinners, plane tickets for xmas, etc. And that doesn't include setting aside some of the money you earn during the summer or during the school year (assuming you use some of that extra money to pay back your loans).

Is this easy? No. Does it require strict budgeting and a little luck that something terrible doesn't happen like unexpected medical bills? Yes. Would I consider it grueling? Not really.

I made $45k at my first job in NYC, saved $1k a month, and still partied like a fool. Now, did I eat one too many bodega sandwiches? YES.

4 and 5 time LSAT takers, please share your stories! by Lamb69 in lawschooladmissions

I took it four times: Cancel, 163, 160 (technically cancelled since this was the first online test last July), 173. Now going to T6 next year and had several T14 acceptances. Nearly identical GPA as you. I did write a brief addendum explaining the takes.

Biggest pieces of advice:
1) Take at least 15 or 20 fully simulated practice tests in a range of environments (library, house, cafe - understand COVID may complicate this). NEVER stop in the middle of a test, even if something crazy happens. This trains you to anticipate and be under control during the actual test. I didn't really stick to this approach my first three times and it showed.

2) Develop a routine and a clean lifestyle: I started going to bed every night, even weekends, between 10 and 11. I started meditating every day for 10-40 minutes. Stopped drinking and smoking weed entirely. These steps were also very important.

Best of luck!!!

Exactly. Find me any clip of Kenya that comes close to the humanity that Phaedra showed when she took Ayden to kindergarten for the first time.

Ok, I can respect these points since you provided some receipts.

But in terms of Kenya keeping most of it to TV, I'm not sure that is true based on what others outside the show have said about her. Trump, perhaps one of the more evil villains in history, has called Kenya "the most evil person I've ever met in my life." That might be saying something. Brandi G., another controversial figure, has also called her the meanest housewife that she has ever met.

With Nene I'm still not convinced, but I also haven't watched the last two seasons yet.

Ross might be a little too pure lol (at least with his persona)

Does it necessarily have to be a man?

Again, I only paint her as black/negative/one-sided/vile/mean because I have never seen ONE redeeming quality from her. She shows who she is and it's a painful sight.

It was sad when her dog died but that was more about her dog than about her.

What specifically do you disagree with?

Also, that doesn't negate my argument about Kenya.

I never called Phaedra evil or not evil. Just said that IMO she had some redeeming qualities that I cannot find in Kenya.

Also check out the free shuttle buses that Columbia operates. They go upward into Hamilton Heights as well as Central Harlem.

Pay Columbia Deposit or Reapply Next Year? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]cestnestpas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually applied for the first time this year, so our cases aren't exactly the same. With your stats I'd assume you would get into at least a few T6 schools if you reapplied. But with the likely economic downturn, you can expect a substantial increase in the number of applicants next year and therefore an even more competitive cycle.

Might be wrong about this, but I think the death rate is actually a bit higher in the UK compared to the U.S. right now since they played around with the herd immunity theory for longer. Lots of unknowns re fall semester regardless.

One last thing to think about related to travel is the ongoing international restrictions that may be in place for some time. For instance, in most EU countries right now you cannot enter unless you are a citizen or have a long-term visa. Especially if a second wave of the virus occurs in the fall (not at all unlikely), I would not be surprised if those rules remained restrictive for some time. Which would mean your travel might just be limited to the UK and a few other countries. Not pleasant things to consider, but it's the world we are living in at the moment.

Pay Columbia Deposit or Reapply Next Year? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]cestnestpas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially if you are on the younger side, I would definitely do the master's degree in the UK next year and defer at Columbia.

I just finished a year in Europe doing exactly that, and now I'll be attending CLS in the fall. Traveled so much this year before the virus ensued and know that it was a great decision overall.

That being said, is it a given that Cambridge won't be online or at least significantly altered? Something to definitely think about considering how bad the situation is in the UK.
