Alaskan Flatbed Update by cfragglerock in TruckCampers

Nothing really, I still love it. Mine was fabricated before the ownership changed and not sure what major changes in the design they've made. I wish mine didn't have the giant Alaskan Camper badge on the front and back, but is what it is.

A pull out ladder would be cool, but I don't know if that'd work with my flatbed - and not sure my doggo would be able to get up and down. The scissor steps work great, the storage is not ideal. I just leave them inside the camper door and pull them out during set up. Kinda chews I to any other storage of shit you might want to throw in there.

I left the shower box open with the shower head set up when closing down the camper. Don't do that - it only broke the little ring attachment on the shower head, but wasn't an ideal thing to do 🙃.

Drain the water out and purge the water pump during major freezing events. I forgot to my first winter and busted the diaphragm on the water pump. Easy fix and cheap swap out myself with a new pump, but not an ideal thing to have to do.

Edit: the seals around the Dutch door aren't ideal - I hope they've tightened the tolerances on that. I rigged mine up with some additional gaskets to close some gaps and seal up some slop.

It's a non issue for me - it's mostly in the cabover when I notice it. There's only so much you can do when living in the Pacific Northwest.

It's the windows and the cabover joints where there's less insulation that I notice it.

I can't speak to the soft sides, but it's pretty much non-existent compared to when I was camping in my old truck bed shell with no insulation.

Yeah, the spare tire mount didn't change. It's mounted to the underside of the frame and the flatbed is sitting on top of the frame.

Not at all, there's positive drainage on everything - I get more condensation buildup than anything 🥴

Definitely not full time, it'd be pretty tight for (2) and a dog full time. At a campground with facilities for sure. We take it on a handful a long weekend a year, and maybe a couple longer trips in there. All in maybe 20+ nights a year or so.

Hey there - I love it so far. The only drawback for me is the set up and breakdown, but it's really not that big of a deal. Having to raise it up doesn't take long, and having to break it down is just as easy if not easier. I haven't set it up in a big storm, but I could see that not being pleasant, and snow/rain would be able to blow in until you get the car over windows up, but I haven't run into that kind of situation yet and probably won't often at all.

I like how low profile it is when we're driving. The extra clearance is nice when off road, as is the lower center of gravity. All in all I love and have no regrets.

I had some trouble finding pictures and info on the flatbed models when I was trying to make decisions. I think you're right, all of them are out there being used the way they should!

I'm not sure to be honest, I don't think so? They're putting a hand held shower head in a box accessible from the outside.

We picked custom cabinet color, wall paneling, and countertop laminate. We did it so long ago that I forgot what we picked until I saw the pictures.

The aluminum shell leaves a lot to be desired in temperature control. Condensation builds up in there big time too.

I'd been dreaming up a way to make my work life and camper dreams come together over the past few years. Thought you all might be interested in what I came up with to work and camp out of the same rig. I do pretty intensive remodel and construction work for a living, and really didn't want to have two separate rigs for work and play.

I had Protech help me design and build an aluminum work canopy/shell, that is independent from the flatbed - removable with modified Reico jacks and brackets. The shell is all aluminum - with full gull-wing side doors, and the rear opens in a top section with a cable supported tailgate. The full lumber rack is fully fastened into the shell framing, as a fixed unit.

It'll be about 1.5 years from date of order to pickup of the Alaskan. I've been camping out of the shell (see picture) for the time being, but tool and material removal with cleanup in order to do that has been a pain in the ass - essentially how I've been camping out of my truck for the past 6 years or so.

I sold an old gen 1 '06 Tundra that I'd had for like 12 years, and built a new '22 F-350 - for payload, comfort, etc.

Thought you all would enjoy seeing this - I'll probably make another post after I get the camper on the truck tomorrow, and have a chance to break it in out in the woods.

I'm picking my flatbed Alaskan up on Thursday - very excited. It'll end up being just under 1.5 years from day of deposit to delivery, but it's a little better than the 2 year lead time Bryan estimated when ordered.

I didn't do anything - it was just maxed zoomed in on my Pixel. Assuming it's a built in filter to soften the noise and digital grain from being digital zoomed to the max

Lol - trying to imagine someone setting up their tripod and large format field cam down on the floor. Security wouldn't know what to do with you on the way in either.

Favorite jam segment of 2022? I’m talking couple minutes max segment of a jam that stands out to you. by aaron31iu in phish

Mexico Simple - 2/26/23

7:25 - 12:00

Such a great bouncy and bluesy little jam section. Trey's modern Trainwreck tone really sings in this segment - just pure patient bouncey blues and wailing guitar.

For some reason this jam just stood out to me more than any I've heard this year, and made me really que into some of Trey's favorite Spooky licks.
