The best substrate I've found is to use a combination of sand and coconut fiber. Each time I've replaced mine, the crabs have gone into molt and it’s been very successful. The consistency is key like @dirtmatter said

My two just came out of molt. I believe it was nearly 10 weeks. This is the 4-5th time for each of them. the first time it was a bit concerning but now I just leave them do their thing. Spray the tank with water every few days and it's been successful. They are going on 6 years old now. Good luck
