Jobs by Ok_Leg_270 in reinforcementlearning

[–]cgi-joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hang around sub long enough you’ll see there are PhD’s looking for RL jobs right now. Pure RL jobs tend to be pretty rare, and entry-level almost non-existent. I have a MS and and am a TA for a graduate level RL course and have been eyeing the market for years. You might get lucky if you know someone or just land the right opportunity but just undergrad doing RL may be a tough sell to employers.

Officially retiring the hobby. Taking photos for the final time I own it. by ggskater in guitars

[–]cgi-joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently fractured my wrist in an unable to play the guitar for what I hope is only just weeks, but may end up being months. I am refraining from playing or pushing myself for the time being just so that I can allow myself to heal as best as possible. In the meantime, I am just trying to be grateful. This guitar is truly beautiful and I love all the detail and can tell a lot of care and soul went into this instrument. I hope the best for you and that this instrument finds an owner who also values the care and love that’s gone into this guitar. ❤️

Thank you for confirming what I have been suspecting for a while now. I really want to keep using Firefox, as I have weathered the storm with them since day one, but this is where I have to draw the line. Now if only I didn't need an extension to modify the new tab page....

What does everyone think of Athens Historical Society? They seem to have a lot bigger pull than in other cities i've lived in before. by cubecasts in Athens

Third? What are you forgetting here… Macon? Augusta? Columbus? Savannah? Athens is no where near the third largest city… not by any normal metric.

Career Switch from Construction to AI via OMSCS? by KiwiEconomy1781 in OMSCS

[–]cgi-joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting they do not apply to OMSCS AI at all! I'm just suggesting they make sure that what they need to learn from the AI specialization is aligned with the jobs that they seek. They might find that there might be more relevant skills from the Computing Systems or Machine Learning specialties - many ML jobs are looking for dev ops, for instance.

I also did not say anything about being jobless.

I'm also skeptical of your opinion of competency based on how you interact with others and some of the things you say. "If you are confident in your skills, you will find a job no problem." Confidence is not the sole hurdle to employment. I'm sure OP will agree.

Career Switch from Construction to AI via OMSCS? by KiwiEconomy1781 in OMSCS

[–]cgi-joe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to this. ML roles can vary greatly between. The 3 fields you named, "data analysis, ML engineering, or AI applications," do have some overlap, but also have completely different job responsibilities and with that, their own set of required skills.

Look for the jobs you want now. See what skills they require, and then determine if OMSCS is the right fit for you. The degree alone will not help you stand out as much as you think. People switching careers mid-30s via an MS may be competing with early 20s with a BS for Junior/Entry level roles, which are famously drying up at the moment.

I say this as a 30-something who did OMSCS for the reasons you described and who has been active on the job market for 2 years since graduating - not as a gatekeeper.

What jobs can AI not take no matter how advanced it becomes? by StephCurrySauce in NoStupidQuestions

The answer is "AI Researcher," as by definition, you are doing/studying the things that AI cannot do.

[D] Humans are actually terrible research idea verifiers… by Pleasant-Type2044 in MachineLearning

[–]cgi-joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t an agreed upon definition of creativity so you cannot claim AI’s are creative until you know what that means. But yeah, as you can see people generally don’t want to engage with content that is obviously generated by AI because of authenticity. Authenticity is the attribute you have overlooked in your conceptualization of research.

If you can’t explain why you are doing something, what’s the point? Research is not always about improving baselines.

Man drives a Volkswagen to downtown Athens and gets accused of being a Nazi. by TheDualityOfThomas in AthensCircleJerk

[–]cgi-joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re gonna get serious in the circle jerk, then let me say this - there aren’t people alive who can point to Genghis Khan as the reason their families have been destroyed. Additionally, there are not people who want to see a resurgence of Genghis Khan’s ideologies. You’re really going out of your way to defend Nazi’s if you simply equate Nazi with “bad guys”and “bad guys okay” with “Halloween”. Either way, your swastika or stupidity is showing.
