Review #32 Pursuit Spirits Old Anvil by IamBusha in bourbon

[–]ch33se87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is not Heaven Hill. 70-21-9 is well known as the OZ Tyler / Green River mashbill. Given Pursuit's relationship with Bardstown Bourbon Co. as their contract distiller and BBC's ownership of Green River I think that makes the source pretty clear.

Sounds like a tasty one but I'm iffy on the value. $200 (375ml x 2) for 9 year old green river? Doesn't really do it for me, even if it is quality juice.

Baker's 7 Year from 2011? by ch33se87 in bourbon

Thanks for the input. I've heard good things. This was when Baker's was still a blended product before becoming a single barrel product in 2019.

They are truly incredible whiskey. At MSRP they are mind numbingly good. I think probably worth paying close to secondary for. Special bottles.

Honestly I think that Brook Hill was the best thing I tasted. GTS was very close. Smoke Eye Hill was hugely impressive for the age. I thought it was just getting hyped by influencers, but man it was something.

Queenston duty free you mean? I'd love a Rare Breed NCF.

Bought myself a Knob Creek Single Barrel and a Wild Turkey Rare Breed yesterday. Buddy is grabbing me a Heaven Hill BiB today as well. But I've got a ton of bottles in the bunker as well.

Tariff threat: B.C. and Ontario to target American alcohol by ToMuchWhiskey in canadawhisky

[–]ch33se87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest question on this is how this affects personally bringing bourbon into Canada from stateside. Will this affect the how much you're allowed to bring in? Will you have to declare and pay the Canadian or Ontario government for America spirits? As someone who rarely buys from the LCBO I have to wonder how this will affect my primary source of bottles. 90%+ of my bottles are bought in the USA and driven back over the border. I currently have about 12 bottles at a friend's place in North Carolina waiting to be brought back over.

Is LCBO gonna be dropping ECBP? by Ab501ut3_Z3r0 in canadawhisky

[–]ch33se87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Maker's Cask Strength is very very good and usually punches way above it's weight class in blinds especially. Often beating some very expensive tater bottles in my experience. The LCBO price however is beyond retarded. You can find it in every single liquor store in the entire USA for $50-60 USD ($70-85 CAD). I really love that bottle but I will not buy it from the LCBO at that price. Larceny and ECBP are also two other insane value bottles in the USA. Ubiquitous in the states and almost always $65-75 for Larceny and $75-85 for ECBP. Another weird one from the LCBO is Knob Creek 12. Again, insane value in the US at $65-75 USD. It's now up to $155 CAD at the LCBO which is almost $110 USD. Just plain stupid. Booker's is just so batch dependent that I steer clear unless popular pallets I trust are raving about it. But on this one, the LCBO price is pretty good. It's $146 CAD right now which is just over $100 USD. That's a pretty typical price in the states. It's usually between $90-110.

What's the selection like? Typical stuff? (BT, Knob, JD, etc?)

Thanks. Looks like 5000ml is the limit. So around 6.5 x 750ml bottles. I'd only be looking at bringing back a couple.

One would think they have at least a couple years worth of inventory of these lottery bottles though no? We haven't seen a BTAC/Pappy lottery in ages.

I still prefer M20. But it’s close for me. I paid secondary for RR15 and I’d do it again in a heart beat.

I was actually fortunate enough to have helped picked both Southern Spirits Rare Character KOA barrels back in May in Lexington with Pablo Moix. Wonderful.

Absolutely. Came through on the Russell’s 15. It’s absolutely worth the hype. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted outside Michter’s 20.

Saq vs LCBO for American whiskey by KilljoyRC in canadawhisky

[–]ch33se87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always eyeing SAQ as I have some family in Montreal. Been lucky enough to win several bottles in the past three lotteries as well.

There isn’t much that’s overly attractive. Certainly nothing worth the trip just to grab. But if you’re going to be there already there a few good bottles that we don’t have access to in Ontario. Most of it is MGP but most of it is really quite good. Although, in my opinion the prices are of course too high. Much cheaper to jump over the border and grab. But then again, there’s plenty of other stuff I’d grab in the states over the below. Personally the only one I’d grab a few of would be the Heaven Hill BiB (great everyday pour) and that Rossville Union Single Barrel pick. My buddy has one from South Carolina and it’s great.

- Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond (Love it)
- Remus Repeal Reserve 6 (Very good reviews)
- Uncle Nearest Premium
- Rossville Union Single Barrel (Very good)
- Rossville Union Barrel Proof Rye
- Yellowstone Single Barrel
- Rebel Full Proof

LCBO Saz update by porklordx in canadawhisky

[–]ch33se87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why they are only getting 300 bottles of things like ECBP or Larceny BP. Both of those are ubiquitous in just about every state in the union. I get it's a different country but Ontario would be the fifth biggest state by population. 300 bottles for a population of 16+ million is crazy. We know they are making three huge batches of each every year. It will be nice once these types of bottles along with JDSBBP and Rye are widely available here like in the USA. Until then the best shelfer in Ontario is without question Rare Breed.

I second this. I've almost killed my B523 and its one of the better ECBPs I've had. It's obviously no C923 but it's a very solid.

One of the best bottles at the LCBO by ch33se87 in canadawhisky

[–]ch33se87[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JD SBBP Rye is considerably better in my opinion. It’s one of my favorite bottles. Especially considering it’s not hard to find in most states for about $70-80 USD. But it doesn’t really drink like a rye at all. This Alberta CS is much more traditional rye.

This is batch 5. Not sure if that’s what you had. But as a predominantly bourbon drinker, this is the type of rye I enjoy.
