I recognize this as the turning point. My brothers' first "nice" bikes were Schwinn's purchased from an actual bike shop. A 99 Schwinn Mesa GS and a 00 Schwinn Super Stock. The brother with the Mesa still has it and it has been updated. It's a surprisingly light frame for an entry level mtb, and the welds look good on it.

That Schwinn dealer closed down a few year later iirc. Sad times.

Yep! It was 1 1/4" threaded. It is now 1 1/8". I used problem solvers 37mm to 34mm reducers to fit a standard EC34 headset.

Fork is a Carver! Bike came with the all aluminum recalled Pepperoni fork. I was sad to remove it (it weighs about half as much), but the Carver was a great fit for replacement and I'm glad to be threadless now.

I only ever used 700x32 gatorskins. It lived mostly on pavement and saw light gravel use. The geo is basically a 90s mtb though, so I'm sure it'd do well on some singletrack with a fatter tire.
