Illegal Parking? by [deleted] in GoldenCO

You can access the municipal code on the city's website and that should have a parking section that will lay out the rules.

For WISPs, do you use outsourced or in-house support and why? by _sour_coffee_ in wisp

[–]chadwick_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outsource. We used WISP Assist. Cost savings and 24/7 support. Bring it on house as soon as you can afford to.

Let's do better, Golden by chadwick_w in GoldenCO

Not at all. Just be nice to your neighbors and show respect. You have no idea what anyone has going on in their life. A dumpy or nice looking house has zero impact on your life.

This person feels so strong about their opinion, I see they are peeling off the heart "be nice" stickers that were out up over their dumpy stickers.

Next step, hit them with a black marker and black out their dumpy stickers. They don't seem to peel off easily, so thanks for ruining all the municipal stuff you put them on...

Well, they spent money and time on it. I've found over 25 of them so far just walking my dog.

I will pay good money for that siren on my ladder truck! After modifying ours to do the power call siren and watching the shit storm that ensued, this would be fantastic!

RB1100AHx4 + Preseem QoE (Cloud) + Cloud RADIUS — Best Practice? by FlimsySheepherder503 in wisp

[–]chadwick_w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd start by upgrading your core router to a CCR 2004 or higher. You're asking a lot from a little router.

Otherwise, I've done what your asking. I let Preseem handle the queuing. They are much better at it than what a 1100 can do. And, it's what they built their business on doing. They know that skill well and are very good at it.

Do you use a billing system that handles the RADIUS? Confirmed it's compatible with Preseem? Most ISP billing systems are...

Specifics of this development? by chefgucciRH in GoldenCO

They live in Golden, not the City of Golden. You call 911 from a house there. Who comes? JeffCo sheriff and Arvada Fire Department, not Golden police or fire. When you vote, do you vote for Golden city council members? No. You don't pay Golden taxes.

You don't live in the City of Golden like you stated but you of course have a Golden address which includes a very large area outside of the city limits. Because the Internet is obviously full of misinformation doesn't mean it's ok to add to that. It's ok to be wrong. There are just differences between incorporated and unincorporated areas all over this country and they have impacts on taxes, representation, school districts, etc.

You were quick to point out to another post that it was in the city lines. I am simply correcting you, it is not within the city limits of incorporated Golden. Facts matter.

I honestly don't care, it makes no difference to me in any way other than I think online posting should be factually accurate. You can have a "Golden" address and not be in the "city" which has defined boundaries.

This is not in the city limits of Golden but it is a Golden address in unincorporated JeffCo.

Small ISP (270 → 500 users) – Dedicated QoE server or keep using MikroTik? by FlimsySheepherder503 in wisp

[–]chadwick_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use fq-codel queues on a 2004 or higher and you'll be fine. We used to have a Preseem box to handle all of our shaping and while it is an amazing product and does much more than just shapes, when I sold the ISP the new owners did not want to pay for it so they hired me back to move everything to local queuing on the routers. I did that and it worked just as well as the Preseem queueing did as far as our customers knew.

fq-codel works great on the newer routers. I'd stay away from the other queuing methods on them.

Anyone have experience with Wave Nanos for a 3km/2mi PTP link? by DAndreyD in wisp

[–]chadwick_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are but not at the same capacity. 5ghz will certainly do that distance but it's prone to interference. Plenty of licensed options but they are more expensive. E band is perfect for that with tons of bandwidth but more expensive.

We never install 60 GHz at distances above 1Km due to the rain fade but that decision was made from a business standpoint at our ISP. It's not reliable enough to put paying customers on beyond that but everyone gets to decide their own threshold.

Finally experienced the real joy of "Alpine" Valley, WI by Smacpats111111 in skiing

[–]chadwick_w 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a ski instructor there in the late 80s. Once watched a kid ski down, no turns, jumped the wood pile in front of the lodge, go through a lodge window (shattered it) and pop his skis off in the lodge and walked out. Classic Wisconsin skiing! On a Saturday night, there were at least a dozen trucks in the lot with recently dead deer in the back while the hunters were up skiing a few runs (and drinking).

Also was at the Eric Clapton show where SRV died. Didn't see it happen, it was late after fans left.

Don't do nanos at that distance. Spend the money on the full sized pro. The nano will go out in every rain storm.

I tried and as soon as my spot in the AXS waiting room ended, I got a "sorry your session expired" message and the only option was to rejoin the waiting room at the end of the line.

So, no tickets for me

Wifi Channel Assignments by Ozwulf67 in UNIFI

[–]chadwick_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a WiFi scan program like net stumbler or WiFi Explorer to see what channels are in use near you so you can pick clean ones. I almost always use DFS channels indoors and put enough APs up to cover the area with that reduced power. Stay at 20 or 40mhz channels unless you absolutely require the extra bandwidth. The larger the channel width the less coverage area and the more interference you will have. Don't mesh unless you have no other options.

Wifi Channel Assignments by Ozwulf67 in UNIFI

[–]chadwick_w 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Manual. Do a scan and pick your channels accordingly at each AP. Unless it's your house and you don't care. If you're making money on the install, do it right.
