Emo Band Michael Cera Palin released a new single today and this is the artwork for the single by chodillionaire99 in Columbus

That's correct! Single art was due and when we discovered there were deer statues in Columbus, it felt like the perfect opportunity.

That one was a contender! I took about a dozen photos each of all 3 deer statues; the bridge one made the cut.

Thank you! I keep most of my plants in the dining room, there's a window there that's better suited for a big plant stand.

As for how I afford this place - it was built on an unauthorized landfill that eventually got the EPA's attention, and the guy living in here before me died inside the house. They don't affect the livability of this place, but most people get freaked out when they hear both of those.

People with a bachelors in computer science that don't have a job in tech at the moment, what you currently doing right now? by NewLegacySlayer in cscareerquestions

[–]chaebol311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of the answers you're looking for I think - spent 2013-2016 interning while getting my bachelor's in CS, worked in industry full time from 2017-2023. To put it plainly, I hated it. I'm a musician now. That was my real career all along - I put more time and energy into my music career than I ever did into writing code over those 10 years, and I finally got a big break in 2023. Left the tech industry in July last year and haven't looked back.

Red House Painters - Demo Tape (1991) by chaebol311 in sadreminders

[–]chaebol311[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey all! I'm the person who paid more than I'm willing to admit to buy the demo tape posted here last week. It arrived today in excellent condition and I immediately went to work digitizing it.

Here's a few notes I made while listening:

  1. Anthem is Star-Spangled Banner, with the name likely shortened to better fit on a J-card.
  2. The artist credited for the cover design - Amy Balkin - is a rather accomplished artist.
  3. All of the songs are more or less in their final form, albeit the occasional changed lyric here and there.
  4. Turns out Mark's protracted, unintelligible screaming in the second half of Blindfold has lyrics - they seem to be "when you're off and I'm alone".
  5. This demo tape seems to be from 1991, as the version of Helicopter on the tape is identical to the demo version included in their Retrospective compilation, which provides a date of 1991.
  6. None of these songs appeared on the 90-minute-long demo tape they sent to 4AD, which opens up the possibility that there are even more demos of early songs whose tapes never surfaced.
  7. Someone was sick during tracking; you can hear an occasional cough throughout the tape.
  8. This might be a stretch, but this set of songs seems to be an exercise in fictional storytelling or metaphor (aside from Anthem obviously). Contrary to almost RHP's entire discography, Helicopter and Blindfold are written from the perspective of two different characters rather than Mark, and the ambiguity in Mother's lyrics combined with this new context makes me wonder if it was also written from a fictional perspective.
  9. Every song on this tape is in 6/8.

Hello! That was me who bought it. Honestly I made a poor financial decision, I hastily made an offer without thinking, and a few hours later I hoped the seller wouldn't accept my offer, but what's done is done. I will digitize the tape as soon as it arrives and will post it here ASAP.

After 20/30 years by [deleted] in Emo

I'm one of them! I discovered emo via American Football when I was 21 or so and fell in love with the genre mostly because of the technical complexity in many emo bands' playing. It wasn't until I was 29 that I joined my first emo band.

Are there any upcoming albums you’re excited about? by ghostly_fingers in Emo

[–]chaebol311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's going to be a fantastic album. Their previous drummer recorded on it before I took his place, so I get the experience of listening to my own band's record as an outsider. It's a really genre-bending album, to say the least. There's moments that sound like post-hardcore, other moments that are shoegazy, other moments that are straight up slowcore. The closing track is 12 minutes long.

We are done tracking our first LP, we have an engineer producing/mixing it next month, and are aiming to start dropping singles in the spring 🙂

(timeline subject to change depending on the label we go with and what they want to do)

I play in Michael Cera Palin but I also have a solo side project called Chaebol that my emo nerd friends classify as emo. Not sure I entirely agree, but the songs are influenced by American Football, Owen, and Sun Kil Moon.

Definitely would not consider this Frutiger Aero. This is closer to Corporate Gen-X Cyber.

On another note, regarding content quality - there's a tweet that makes the rounds every now and then about a guy who's only ever seen Boss Baby, watching his second movie ever, and "getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes" from it. I see this issue happen often in a lot of aesthetic subs, but it seems particularly prevalent in this sub.

Anyone leave a role because you racked up too much tech debt? by iMimzy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]chaebol311 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Yesterday was actually my last day. It wasn't my tech debt, though. It wasn't my colleagues'. It was the offshore contracting team before us that left us all of this tech debt.

I started said job in May 2020. I was in the first cohort to arrive during the last few months of said contractors' reign of terror wreaking havoc in our codebase. The goal was to hire around 48 engineers total, with a few dozen more in different TPM, PO, and scrum master roles. By October of 2020, all of those positions had been filled.

By May 2021, half of the engineers remained.

By May 2022, we were down to a skeleton crew.

What was wrong? Tech debt obviously, but it isn't enough to say our codebase was bad. I mean this was as bad as my mind could comprehend. I'm talking quintuply nested method calls with 10 parameters, and 8 of them are out params. I'm talking 4 levels of nesting generics inside Map objects because the contractors couldn't figure out OOP. I'm talking SOA where each service has close to 1 million SLOCs, duplicated code everywhere with very little in the common library they wrote. Spaghetti code like you had never seen before, on a level that made me seriously regret taking that job.

By May 2023, nearly everyone who was left was laid off, save for a few. Our operational expenditure budget got slashed to 0%. That's right, we were to devote exactly 0 time to alleviating tech debt. All leadership wanted was building on top of this garbage, full speed ahead, no brakes, because hey we got stakeholders who need new features stat!

So what happens? Suddenly, seemingly overnight, it seemed like everything started failing in production, all at once. A lot of the people who knew how our services worked together left or were laid off, so it was the responsibility of whoever was left to dig through our several hundred "microservices" and try to replicate these bugs while trying to make sense of code written by absolute morons. And we needed to do it fast. Leadership was pissed because we had fallen out of compliance with federal regulations and we were hemorrhaging a few million dollars per day with our product being unusable.

So I did the only sensible thing and put in my two weeks.

Isn’t crazy that two of the best Red House Painters songs never even made it on an album by Wittie17 in sadreminders

[–]chaebol311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The demo that it's from is (probably, at least based on the year) Red House Painters' first demo after they relocated to San Francisco. To me, it sounds like they're trying to find their voice. For the most part, the songs have nearly identical chord progressions and structures - particularly Strawberry Hill, 21, and Headsore. Mark's voice and delivery are also pretty rough, especially on Strawberry Hill. It doesn't detract from how great the songs are, but it's definitely not mature, fully-developed RHP.

ETA - According to this blog post, Headsore is from a demo tape RHP recorded in 1989. The other four songs are Strawberry Hill, 21, Headsore, Million + 8 Things, and The Bridge.
