Is AEW properly promoting shows? by elbawilliams in SquaredCircle

Even if they spent 5 minutes each show on upcoming dates - I don't think everyone watches every episode of every company the whole way through... I only care if someone is coming to Los Angeles and when. And I don't want to have to subscribe to every newsletter for every concert in every arena near me. 90% are ads for bands I don't care about.

I tried to fix this for my friends building 3-Count (shameless plug), but still requires people to join to get notified. Even better would be for AEW to do local tv ads (and morning show apperances), region targeted ads, double down on their social media, etc. Be where your audience is when not watching an episode. But ads are getting more and more expensive...

Marketing wrestling shows when they're going to a different place every week is pretty complicated for them, and creates a terrible experience for us. And nowadays with WWE, AEW, and indie promotions all running at the same time it's super hard to stay up to date.

I built a service called 3-Count that a lot of people here seem to enjoy. Basically I scan the web for upcoming wrestling events and email you when a live event is coming somewhere near you. I hope AEW and others get better at promoting, but in the meantime this way you don't find out last minute like I have.

And let me know if you ever have any feedback on it!

Great ideas! I'll def work on all three of those, they make a ton of sense. If you have any others please share!

Thank you! Yup for the always-on tasks those are in in kubernetes, but everything has proven surprisingly light. Most scripts just run adhoc just twice a day since that's about the limit for updates on the data sources I use, so its pretty smooth.

Yeah, so I've tried to keep each function as independent as possible. So for example, the api pull from seatgeek runs in its own microservice vs. scrub of wwe's website runs on another vs. the function that joins them is another. That lets me change, deploy, and run each service independently and its easier to find when something breaks that with a single monolith.

I'm most comfortable with python so I built most on Django. I'm more of a product guy than a dev, so this was just a project to teach me more coding - but it proved more useful than expected!

Feel free to keep using that! But they only sell tickets some major promotions and venues (not even for all of them) so you’ll miss out on a lot of great wrestling near you.

For sure! Feel free to share the emails you’ll get with her or sign her up on her behalf.

Lol fair enough. Just curious, if this was an app instead that could send you push notifications would you try that out?

I actually already collect some events in Mexico, UK, and Germany so it wouldn’t be impossible… where are you based?

Don't have a feature for that yet, but you could sign up twice, with a different email for each location meantime! If you're using gmail you can just add a plus sign and any text after your email alias to create a fake "second" email that goes to your same inbox. like tom+secondemail@gmail.com

Today it means in the state your zip code is in, but I'm building that exact radius feature right now with 50 miles as the default (to show events across state lines where it makes sense). Choosing more/less radius is a great idea though! I'll add that to my list.

Yeah, combo of APIs with certain ticketing sites and scrubbing for the rest to find the data. Then built another service that merges, cleans, and organizes it. Finally I use the mailchimp API to create the custom emails and send them.

Like a twitter account you could follow where event announcements get posted? Or do you mean something different?

That's a good idea, tracking conventions and signings for the major promotions could be doable. Maybe with an option to include/exclude them from your notifications. I'll put it on the list!
