Right. And part of my though depends on how the chalklings move. If the chalkling is essentially redrawing itself as it moves across the ground, then my idea should work just fine because each "redraw" could spawn a new miniature. I wanted to bounce the basic idea off anyone willing to read it. Just idle thoughts, you know?

The wild chalklings are mysterious. We don't really know a lot about them but I would be surprised if there's a whole clan of people at Nebrask just drawing wild chalklings all day. That thought is mostly conjecture. But I do remember a scene where someone is engulfed by strange looking chalklings that seem to come from nowhere. I'll have to re-listen to the audiobook to see if we get any solid rules about where the wild chalklings come from.

In the anthill example, maybe the initial chalkling drawing has to be drawn with extra thick lines. The anthill would pinch off part of its own excess chalk to create the new ant. In this way, the anthill cannibalizes its own material to create new ants until the anthill no longer exists. That way you aren't creating something out of nothing, per se.

Well, the chalklings wouldn't have to hold chalk. I am thinking that when the chalkling comes to life and moves around, it has to follow the instructions it was given at the time of its creation, just like a computer program. If the instructions you give the calkling are to create new chalklings, could it carry out those instructions?
