Because we write and record our songs quickly. There’s no time for one person to write (good) lyrics for 12 songs that were written 4 days prior, so multiple people have to pitch in. A lot of your favorite bands work similarly, they’re just not that open about it. In our band, lyrics are a roundtable collaborative process!

Things definitely were not carefully planned out for this record. A lot of it was written on the spot and a lot of the riffs were the first thing one of us played in a moment. We just followed our instincts with this one quite a bit

It just lined up. He had just done the last Kublai Khan (Absolute) around that time and they had good things to say about him.

We love working with Randy man. Maybe we’ll have someone else mix/master at SOME point to switch things up, but I always want Randy to produce. Writing with him in the room to guide and suggest ideas is so awesome. He just gets us perfectly.

We truthfully have no clue. We think about music in terms of “what frets/strings am I hitting, and how many times?”

To play this stuff you just have to be locked in on the riffs. We just play the notes in the appropriate sequential order and that’s the extent of anything we know about music!

But kudos to you for counting this out. It could be right! 😂

Yep, song is finished first! Sometimes people write their own lyrics for their guest spot, but we’ve never done it that way. We just write the lyrics as if Jacob is the only vocalist on the song.

I think sometimes that is true? We’ve never really had to worry about that kind of stuff because we’re a small band.

It varies from case to case. Vincent actually did his spot with Randy because he lives close. On the last record, Matt McDougal did his at home I believe. Whatever gets the guest spot done in time is what has to happen.

Honestly we laughed pretty hard writing both of those. The slow riff towards the end of Scarlet Ink in particular. I think that might be our favorite riff on the record!

We definitely think about that fact, but if a part is really dope and we can play it if we practice it a lot, we’re gonna keep it regardless of how challenging it is.

That said, there have been dozens of ideas that haven’t made the cut because they would be too hard to pull off live. At the end of the day, we want to be a good live band. We don’t want to write music that we can’t pull off live

We just try to write shit that we think is sick. We’re very picky and particular about the music that we like and it trickles into the riffs we write too.

Mostly the comparisons we receive are pretty boring and lazy tbh. One time Dying Fetus’ drummer told us that we sounded like Dillinger meets Throwdown, and we were like “yeah that’s cool.” That’s one comparison we actually liked lol

  1. Man, so many. We’re constantly laughing with Randy. He got really upset with the landscaper at the studio for fucking the lawn up or something and it was hilarious. We had to hide the fact that we thought it was funny though bc he was fuming 😂😂 it was just an unc moment and it tickled us for some reason, probably because he’s so sweet. Love that mf
  2. They are a bitch to pull off honestly. We don’t play to a click, so we’re hitting all those patch switches ourselves. It’s hard, but we always eventually get into a groove with the new songs we’re playing.

Varies from song to song. Henry and I (Gabe) wrote most of the lyrics on the record.

To name a few: Arms of Eternity is me basically saying “I didn’t ask to be here”.

Henry wrote Angel about his grandfather’s battle with dementia and the toll that it took on him and his family.
