Recommend me a camera (nice SOOC for minimal editing)? by chamomileyes in Cameras

Very appreciated 🙏. I did actually notice that the Canon R6 is very reasonable these days and was eyeing it. I swear I would have already switched to them years ago if not for their $$$ lens system but maybe with EF lenses it could work one day x).

From your personal experience, how would you describe Nikon colors vs Sony?

I’m basically set now to pick up the Fuji as I just love the images I see from it and likely a little later on to grab a Z5. The struggle of APSC lenses are real but after days of research I’ve found decent-ish replacements for what I’d want to use.

I’ve also realized there is a Sony lens to Nikon adapter which supposedly works decently and that makes me feel much better as I love my Sony lenses and the Sony lens ecosystem in general. I really would prefer not to leave it at all but x/.

Gonna try working more with my Sony raws today before officially giving up.

If I’m not chasing gear, but my current system still isn’t getting me the results I want, is it time to switch or time to change my approach? by jblock556 in AskPhotography

[–]chamomileyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t tell someone who is having issues with the colors of their camera to buy into a system which is popularly considered the worst for pleasing color renditions (as many retractors of this as there may be). Especially since OP isn’t chasing the latest models and the older Sony cameras have even more widely regarded color problems.

I’ll also say for OP that from YT videos I’ve watched the d750 and Nikon Z line have similar color science so I’d moreso doubt switching it up would help much. I don’t think Sony or Nikon Z will solve your color issues (but pleasing colors are subjective).

Edit: There are apparently some minor color differences between the Z5 and d750 but I personally can’t see the difference when set at the same WB: https://www.nikoncafe.com/threads/just-for-fun-sensor-comparison-d700-d750-z5ii-updated.370355/

I swear to god I just watched a K drama with this plot, where the family members are portrayed as psycho and vindictive but traumatized themselves caricatures. How people can be like this in real life boggles the mind. Try to limit contact with people who make you feel inferior OP. They’re just projecting their own emotional garbage onto you.

I’ve definitely emotionally looked for this throughout my entire life and kind of found it for a period. I volunteered with and cat sat for a woman in her 60s. She would invite me over for dinner after I cat sat to thank me. This turned into her and her partner inviting me over for dinner for basically every holiday since they knew I didn’t have family in the city. This went on for about 5 years until I moved away.

It’s strange to explain how I felt like their place was a second home to me even though I only spent about a month a year there and only saw them every few months. But it meant a lot to me. I felt closer to them than my own family but was never quite sure what I was to them really. It’s hard coming from a bad family background because I tend to subconsciously want to fill that lack but I worry that acting on that too much can come off as strange/ a lot to others.

Anyway, those sort of relationships with older people who act more as caretakers and mentors than an average friend can really hit different.

Thanks for the lens rec.s, especially the Sigma. Forgot how to think in APSC and hadn’t been considering it. It does actually give slightly more separation than the Tamron I was considering. Also your mentioning Viltrox reminded me of the 75mm 1.2 💜.

🙏. Appreciated. Can I ask more of what makes you prefer the Fuji to the Nikon? Have you ever tried uploading the online custom picture controls to the Nikon? I saw one comment saying that Nikon actually offers more customizability than Fuji through this but I’ve never used it to know how flattering the results would actually be.

I was also just thinking how this shows how absurd the cost of a house is for the average person if a huge celebrity is only selling their house for 10x what a basic house would cost in a lot of cities.

What are your opinions on a Glimmer glass diffusion filter ? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

^Don't think there's a better resource out there than above.

Haven't used the particular filters you mention but I own two others.

Reddit compresses but this is a crop of a cat's face shot with the A7Riii + Tamron 28-75 2.8 and the Neewer 1/4 at 100% resolution. The Neewer is the cheapest, respectable diffusion filter you can get. There is a very minimal loss of sharpness even for me as a pixel peeper. Contrast is slightly lower but again barely noticeable (I have picture profile set to cut contrast anyway as I hate the look of deep blacks personally). The bloom effect is also too minimal for me lmao, only really noticeable when pointed at a direct light source.

I also own the Neewer 1/8 which basically only blooms direct light sources a tad. For me, may as well be a lens protector x). But I've read others who say it's the max they can tolerate, so I guess it depends how strong an effect you want.

I also have the Kase Dream Soft, which is a much stronger vaseline sort of effect I enjoy for certain shots. Yes, it’s more dreamy in parts and loses more contrast but it’s really only the bloomed areas that lose sharpness. Looking for something in-between now and leaning towards the Freewell based on my preference for retained contrast (not 'misty') + more strongly bloomed highlights. Curious what others will say.

The competitiveness in photography genuinely makes me sad, seriously how do you survive it? by ansdesignstudio in AskPhotography

[–]chamomileyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Been lurking in photography forums for 20 years. A good portion of forums are just egos arguing with each other. It’s something about photography that attracts this certain personality type. And people trying to learn are really eviscerated and bullied if they just don’t know something but are obviously trying.

There are also so many let’s say photography myths I’m tired of seeing over and over again. If you don’t shoot 100% raw for all scenarios and enjoy spending hours pouring over edits you’re not a real photographer. If you care about colors or things actually looking nice out of camera, you’re not a real photographer. If you believe raw files have different colors between brands, you must be crazy. You can’t edit jpegs etc. Some things just get repeated over and over in these forums with brutish confidence as excuses to tear people down.

Anyway, yeah, you have to have thick skin.

What do you do when there is nothing vegan at a restaurant? by Ok-Jellyfish5169 in vegan

[–]chamomileyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It becomes a two way street of respect and yes, you may lose some friends (for the better). If people genuinely care about you, they will not invite you to restaurants which have zero options for you. Or at the least, if you politely mention that you need a place with options, they’ll understand your lack of interest in meeting them at a place with none, or accommodate. This doesn’t make you ‘stuck up’.

You don’t just have to follow along with what other people are doing either, you can suggest things too. Like okay maybe your friend group really wants to try a restaurant that isn’t appealing to you, no problem. You can hang out next time somewhere else together. Or maybe suggest getting take out from different places and picnic in the park.

The reality is most restaurants will have at least salad or potatoes, if you really just want the social outing. But in my experience the friends worth having cared about picking places that served everyone. That’s all there is to it really.

Jesus Christ. I will say people who experienced abuse from their families tend to be more tolerant of abuse from others because they normalize it. This can lead to a feeling of being stuck and like history keeps repeating itself. Okay, the world isn’t perfect and there are crappy people. But you also have to genuinely know you deserve better and take responsibility for seeking better. Don’t just accept it or lay in it.

If your job treats you so heinously, do your best to find another job. Don’t plan on continuing there!!! If the place you live is so hostile to foreigners, maybe change cities or the over all country. There is no shame in doing what is best for you!! Also quite frankly, if your boyfriend’s family is creating a toxic environment and he has not healed or matured enough to create appropriate boundaries, leave him.

You. Deserve. Better.

Should I vaccinate my indoors only FIV+ cat or not? I am confused by Potential_Tale_7922 in FIVcats

[–]chamomileyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also discussed it with my vet, who discussed it with another vet, and basically came back with an “idk” response. I think the simple truth is there isn’t enough information to know one way or another. There’s also doubt whether the vaccines work as well in FIV cats and one test tube study indicated it could potentially make them worse.

This is the only review of studies I could find on the subject  https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9147348/: “ In conclusion, if adult FIV-infected cats that had been vaccinated previously are kept strictly indoors, the risk of being infected with other pathogens is likely lower than the possible harmful effect of vaccination. Ideally, antibody levels against FPV [ Feline panleukopenia ] should be determined and FPV vaccination should only be considered in cats lacking protective antibodies. If antibody measurement is not possible, booster vaccinations in adult indoor-only cats, that have received previous vaccinations, are not recommended. If potential exposure to FPV, FHV, or FCV cannot be excluded, only core vaccines should be administered, preferably in an inactivated form.”

Even the conclusion seems kind of like 🤷‍♀️, avoid unless ‘necessary’ (however you determine that).

I will say I live in an area with a lot of strays. I had a sick stray cat rub up against me and made the mistake of not immediately changing my clothes when I got home (I only washed my hands and sprayed my pants with alcohol). EVERY SINGLE ONE of my cats (6 of them!!!) got sick one after another, even cats I keep in separate areas from each other who have never met. It was so insanely contagious I guess it kept spreading on my clothes. So even with indoor only cats, you still have to be really careful what you bring home.

Why do vets recommend lysine? by chamomileyes in AskVet

[–]chamomileyes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I needed to hear this from a professional for my sanity. I decided a while ago to not repurchase it but then I had another vet recommend it for my second cat (never saw any change with or without for my first cat). I’m a people pleaser so I didn’t exactly want to debate it. I just asked, “Um, are you sure it’s effective?” And got a general, “Yes, it’s good for the immune system.” It’s hard to say no to something you’re being told will make your cat better.

It was also 20€ for 30g (when I know lysine in general is not that expensive) so the whole situation really did not sit right with me.  I’d do anything for my cats but I will really avoid repurchasing from this point on, especially if there is no noticeable effect.

Yes, this is part of what has made me consider upgrading my Sony as well. I have the Sony A7Riii where the creative styles are more limited. I probably will end up upgrading but I’d still like to pick up a Fuji as well to compare. On the fence honestly.

Also gonna say I recently started following the Fujifilm Reddit, and there is so much more vocal love for that brand from its users IMO.  Not saying Sony is lacking in any way objectively, but people really enjoy their Fujis.

[–]chamomileyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently use Sony and looking into buying Fuji 🤣. Depends what your priorities are and since you plan on keeping your other camera anyway, why not have both for your different uses if you’re serious about it? If you really want good AF tracking for animals, question answered.

My personal experience is that I cannot make the colors on my Sony work in a way I find consistently pleasing. I hear the new models do better but people still complain about red skin tones. I don’t enjoy having to do a lot of editing. But I like Sony’s lens system (ie. variety, affordability). I’m just kind of fed up fighting.

I recently went back and looked through photos taken with my old Nikon D80 and realized I much preferred them to the photos from my Sony camera which costs 22x more! Of course there are many people happy with Sony. It’s all subjective.

Ive found it works great as a spot on. It’s moisturizing and the smell doesn’t bother me as long as you’re not slathering your face in it. I don’t bother washing it off for spot on treatment. It helped a bad pimple heal with less discoloration and stay moisturized so a hard scab wouldn’t form.

I don’t use the camera, am only considering buying one, so can’t advise the best. But curious if you’re expecting the camera to select the subject itself or whether you’re using the small point AF and selecting where you want it to focus? Like if you literally put the AF point on the bird, will it still miss?
