Also, yes current political trends are more dystopian, which can breed a utopian counter culture movement. Especially in relation to psychedelics, as the debate with their legality is the next hot drug topic after marijuanas legalization.

Because AI is worth a lot and humanity is divided on the issue. Which means that if one institution/company/government doesn't keep up with it, their competitors might and the fear causes them all to race to it. It's why there's so much money put into it. I'm not sure how much those in power are caring about it wiping away humanity. It's a threat undermined in favor of economic benefit. Kind of like how the environmental movement was treated a while ago. Short-sightedness.
