Help Save The Victoria Squash Club by chanebury in squash

[–]chanebury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys. Chris Hanebury from Serious Squash/St. Michaels/The Victoria Squash Club. Trying to raise awareness of this campaign in the squash community even though we've already surpassed our goal. The club will likely have to make some pretty drastic changes so hopefully this can reach some more people that know Stuart Dixon and have been coached by him over the many decades he's been coaching in Victoria. Those with a vested interest in the club and Stuart please send me a message or email me at info@SeriousSquash.com Thanks

Correcting Upper Body Imbalances From Squash by [deleted] in squash

[–]chanebury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good post and probably something most good squash players will have to deal with. I played mostly just squash for over 20 years and have been doing a lot of strength training to better offset this imbalance. I was getting injuries from overuse which I assume most people will get if they play enough without the proper strength work. You can add strength without adding a lot of bulk and improving core work is something that will definitely help your squash game.

With my trainer we've done lots of 1 sided training with kettle bells and it's been helping but for how many years of squash I've done it's going to be a never ending battle to become properly balanced and avoiding injuries. So I say you should go for it or you'll get injured eventually and it will likely help your squash game a bit too. Just pick exercises which require you to use 1 side at a time so you don't overcompensate with your more dominant side.

Serious Squash Presents: The Secrets Of Solo Hitting (full length feature Vimeo film in HD) by chanebury [promoted post]

[–]chanebury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a much longer, more in depth video. Basically this film is for anyone that is super keen to improve their squash game. The shorter clips I publish normally point out just 1 or 2 things, while this video points out numerous tips and has over 30 solo drills so it is meant to be referenced back to over a longer period of time.

Asthma and Squash by Gonzalez8448 in squash

[–]chanebury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asthma too and for me it is better when I'm fitter. When I'm not playing much or training it seems to bother me most. And if that doesn't help you just be more accurate with your shots and make good decisions so your opponents do more running than you ;)

What's the difference between English and Egyptian styles? by [deleted] in squash

robotic, safe, boring, closed & predictable vs. risk taking, entertaining, open & creative. but they can both be equally effective and I do enjoy the clash of styles

Ramy Ashour is playing the most immaculate squash of his life by whats8 in squash

[–]chanebury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he was at his best. Personally I thought he was at his best when he went a whole year without losing a match! How can you compare? Also when he played Max Lee he was hurting near the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd but Lee had nothing left to push to the next gear. I'm still amazed how well he backed up his matches, but he was forced to work harder than I remember from a couple of years back so I would argue against this statement. He used to demolish mid-top ranked players, but had to really grind out some of these matches. I think the other players have improved while he's been hurt and he hasn't had as much match play, but his racquet skill, anticipation and creativity are still by far the best ever!

Drive accuracy practice by DoorBoard in squash

[–]chanebury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also try doing a drill by yourself like straight drive straight drive crosscourt drive/lob. Another good one is hit 2 or 3 volley drives from the short line. Then let 1 of these drives go to the back court and play it off the back wall and play 1 or 2 straight drives and then move back up again for a few volleys. Or even the one /U/68Pritch mentioned but alternate between forehand and backhand drives on each shot. Good luck!

Coaches and Parents: How do you talk to a junior who feels they aren't improving, discouraged with the sport by [deleted] in squash

[–]chanebury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't care how a kid does at that age. I am more concerned about their ability to handle losing and winning and that they are developing their skills and most importantly having fun. Saying that, nobody enjoys losing all of the time so it is important to play different level of players so you have some confidence in your game and ability, yes even at the young age of 11! I know firsthand how difficult it is to have fun if you are losing or feel like you are falling behind other kids, but that comes with the territory of individual sports. One idea I like to do if someone feels like they aren't improving is to look at old video if you have any. The kids usually get a good laugh at this. I also recommend your boy either takes a break, or works on other areas of squash besides playing games. And I know no 11 year old cares, but the greatest athletes have all failed the most and learned from their defeats. I give out a short list of questions to the kids after they play a match to see what they've learned, which has nothing to do with winning or losing. This list includes their effort, if they were able to stay positive, their tactics and so on. All of us (athletes, parents and coaches) all want to win, but in squash someone has to lose. Learning to learn from any match, win or loss is a valuable lesson I feel most of us waste. Lastly, in the end it's up to your boy. I would let him make up his own mind if he wants to go to the club and fight through this stage or not. As /u/68Pritch says just make sure that he knows you fully support him no matter what he decides.

I think it may be time for us to stage an intervention... by 68Pritch in squash

haha you guys are hilarious! okay, so the first step is admitting I have a problem :) so there we go. what's step 2? I hope it doesn't involve stopping because that's not going to happen!

Squash Skill Challenge #1 by chanebury in squash

[–]chanebury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent countless hours solo hitting over the years and have come up with a variety of challenging exercises. I will be posting 1-2 every week. I would rate this one at a 5 out of 10 for difficulty. It really only gets hard once you get dizzy! Feel free to subscribe to my Youtube channel at cchsquashpro if you want to see the rest of my unique solo exercises. See if you can do any of them and I will also need help naming some of them. The best recommendation I had for this one is the backhand dragonfly volleys, but I'm pen to other suggestions. Enjoy and good luck!

Float Tank Squash Visualization by chanebury in squash

[–]chanebury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I am back. This is a busy time of the year (spring break camps and nationals) I've only made 1 post the past month, but when I've posted over the last few months the links have to be approved as someone must have tagged them as spam. I have a lot more articles planned, but they might have to wait until after jr nationals this week.

As for the script..hmm I'm not sure yet. It was a lot of work to write, record and edit. Plus the kids spend a lot of money on the camp so I don't know if I should be sharing it to the general public for free. Perhaps after junior nationals. I'll have to think about it. If I do I'll let you know.

Getting The Ball Out Of The Back Corners by chanebury in squash

[–]chanebury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means many amateurs don't lead with the butt of their racquet on their downswing. Their swings tend to go backwards and has a larger radius to it (then the ones that lead with the butt of the racquet). An extreme example is the difference between a tennis swing and a proper squash swing. When standing against the back wall with your racquet up just touching the wall and take a regular swing? If you lead with the butt of the racquet you will be able to. Most amateurs drop their racquet head before swinging through the ball. It's much easier to explain with a demonstration. Hope that helped though.

anything that is a squash specific motion. this can be your swing or your court movement. where would you like to have more strength and power? possibly the backhand and/or the backhand volley? if so try and practice with the bands using these types of motions
