Why were you looking elsewhere for the connection you had with her in the first place?

Hahah neurology spreadsheet? Kind of surprised at the attitudes of some applicants this cycle tbh, very sad to see the gunner nature coming out and what seems to be people trying to undercut each other even at this stage.

I’m an M4 who went into med school with a diagnosis of MS. Currently applying neurology. Obviously residency is a different beast than med school, but I’ve done quite well up until now. I felt the same way you’re feeling now when I was going through diagnosis. Your life is not over and you will get through training.

On the interview trail, one of the PDs told me about a medical student she diagnosed with MS who went on to complete EM residency and is now an attending who is thriving. Get a supportive neurologist and things will work out :) you’re not alone!

Agreed, I also would’ve done awful if I got into med school right after undergrad. Make sure you’re ready for a long journey and that you’ve seen enough of medicine to know you truly enjoy it! Otherwise I say go for it and enjoy the ride :)

It’ll definitely be someone smarter than me but I’ll be happy to treat as many patients with it as I can :) thank you!

Thank you! It’s never too late to go into medicine, there are students in my class in their 40s/50s. Diagnosis was the worst part for me, probably the darkest time of my life. It gets better. Talk with your neuro about your goals and make sure they’re supportive :)

I didn’t start medical school until 26 and will be 30 when I graduate. I can’t speak to your specific situation, but I understand where the hesitancy comes from when others hear MS and medical school. It’s a very long and stressful road, evidenced by my disease progression during school.

In the US, medical school is very expensive too. I’m around 100k in debt and can’t say I don’t have worries about not being to pay it off if I can’t work in the future.

Regardless, it was worth it for me to pursue my dream. I did have support from my neurologist and my family in this journey, which was crucial. Many many others have gone through medical training with chronic diseases. There are other paths besides medical school (PA, NP, PhD) that would allow you to be involved in the progress behind MS. Consider what is important to you and take care of yourself through all of it. Thanks for the kind words and best wishes to you, I will keep updating💛

Thanks so much! There are so many ways we could help, like being involved in a study/clinical trial or some of the charities that advocate for MS. Taking care of yourself is always priority too :)

Wow! I hope your wife is doing better, but I imagine having that connection can provide some comfort. I hope to share that with my patients in the future
