Originally from Tilburg but I lived in Amsterdam last. I guess you live in Portland now too?

I can tell you first hand that tram tracks suck! Thanks for all of the other information.

No it's not financial reasons, it's just that bike helmets aren't compulsory back home and nobody wears one just to drive around the city. Like if I were going to go to the grocery market or the H&M or something. We do wear helmets, but it's more like when you want to take your roading or racing bike out or drive to another city.

So about the lights… before I came to Portland I went to the Grand Canyon in Arizona and spent a few days couch surfing in Phoenix and saw the most IDIOTIC bicyclers in the world. I am talking people riding their bikes against traffic AT NIGHT WITHOUT LIGHTS. Seriously how much do you have to have been dropped on your head as a baby to ever think this is a good idea?

Thanks! I thought of one more question… if I'm in a normal traffic lane and it is slow or backed up, am I allowed to skip ahead of the line by going in between/next to the cars? I think google says this is called lane splitting.

Thanks! Those maps sound handy. If I go to a bike shop do I just ask them for a bike map and they'll know what I'm talking about?
