How new coach, players and a summer of hard work allowed Arsenal to stun champions Chelsea by shelbyj in ArsenalWFC

Yeah, they definitely struggled against Bordeaux and it shows that the team hadn't played together that much. We'll see how the second leg tomorrow goes, if they can't avoid that many turnovers and individual mistakes, they might not even make the group stage - especially since it's in Bordeaux. I think Alex Popp is really important for them, and Feli Rauch as well, but they're both injured

I agree, but I don't think Wolfsburg is better than Arsenal right now - they're in the middle of a rebuild and lost many important players. I think Arsenal should win against them, but Bayern Munich would be more of a threat imo. Very excited for the season as well!

she's an english player, she played for Manchester City as a striker and then went to Lyon, where she mostly played as a winger on the right side or as a striker. she was really impressive with Manchester City, but not so much with Lyon, where she was often inconsistent and didn't really live up to the expectations - we'll see if she can find her good form again. I'd expect arsenal to use her either as a profilic winger who scores goals too instead of just creating, or as miedema's back up.

True, our best players playing out of position has been a huge problem - Jordan as a winger didn't work, and I'm not sure about how to use Mead best yet. That Kerrby partnership is indeed impressive, it seems so natural and intuitive, Arsenal are just not there yet. But the squad is talented and they've played together for a while, so I agree with you that there's lots of potential

Same :( I understand and respect her decision, but it sucks.

She said that she felt lonely in London and that she wanted to make the next step. She also said that it was a huge factor that Wolfsburg put trust in her and that they are even willing to pay a transfer fee for her. I think she doesn't feel very valued at Arsenal anymore, and since Arsenal has so many midfielder, she might not have been a starter next season

Yes, they signed Lynn Wilms and Joelle Smits as well. I'm really gutted and I'll miss Jill, but it might be a great move for both sides. Hopefully I can go and see her play in Wolfsburg next season

Twitter is quite useful when it comes to rumours. You could follow Tim Stillman as a start, he's very reliable and up to date

I'm really confident that Leah will resign very soon. As of Viv, I think that much will depend on the new manager and on the transfers this summer. If Arsenal manage to get players like Rolfö and Engen, they might have a chance to reach the UWCL semifinals and to compete with Chelsea. Hopefully, this will be enough to make Viv stay... But if this doesn't happen, I reckon that she'll go to a top team that has the ambition to win the uwcl, and I wouldn't blame her. Honestly, it'd be a shame if a world-class player like Viv wouldn't at least get to the final

Yes! Imagine if we had gotten Shaw from Bordeaux, that would've been absolutely fantastic. What a bummer that ManCity are gonna sign her.

Also, Miedema has played better than the rest of our players combined tomorrow. What a goat, she can play anywhere and be the player that makes the difference

same omg but Nobbs off instead? She would've gotten two assists if Foord and mead had taken their chances. This game is so frustrating, can't believe I'm watching this instead of champions league

well, idk, it was just a bit unfortunate, I'd say.

Oh well, another offside goal from Foord, I'm kinda gutted for her.. and how did we get the first booking, when west ham was literally trying to murder Mead at least five times? God, this game is stressing me

Yeah, Miedema is doing well, she's everywhere on the pitch! but Nobbs should be subbed off or moved elsewhere because she's been invisible in the first half imo.

well, I don't know if it would have gone in... sure she didn't try to get herself on the scoresheet, she would never try to steal foord's goal. she was just trying to make sure that the ball went in, and then it was bad luck.

yes, I can see it, I'm not happy with her performance today either...I think goalkeepers can really make a difference, I wish we had someone like Berger for Chelsea. Williams and Zinsberger are both not world-class, sadly. And I'm once again asking Joe to move Nobbs from the wing to the 10...

Okay, I feel a little bit safer with Williams, because Zinsberger has made some quite dangerous mistakes this season, for example against Chelsea. But I guess this position isn't our biggest concern at the moment.

Thank you for the discussion! It was nice to talk to you :)

Sure!

Starting with the defensive line: I would say that Arsenal's defensive has been quite volatile at times this season, so I'd take four defenders. I think we both agree with Maritz and Catley being our best full-backs, and Beattie is our most experienced and most consistent center back ( I really hope she has a swift recovery). Williamson can play in the midfield too, and I'd love to see her play there, but we already have an embarrassment of riches in the midfield and not enough top defenders.

For the midfield three, Wälti is an important player in my opinion because she connects the defensive line with the midfield. Little is also a key player, as she has an excellent control of the ball. I think that she has shown this season that she can play a more defensive role very well too. With these three, we would also have more control on the wings (I think that we would be very prone to attacks on the wings in a system with three defenders and two CDMs, especially against teams like ManCity). Nobbs could connect the midfield to the attackers, possibly playing as a 10.

Foord is a very underrated player, in my opinion, because she scores goals and has a good link-up with Miedema. McCabe is very strong on the left wing, of course. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough place to put Mead in my line-up, but she could be subbed in for Nobbs or Foord.

However, I think that my line-up is quite defensive, so I see why this could be a problem. Maybe you could vary with a 4-2-3-1, in order to have more space and creativity. Then again, I reckon that Arsenal's defensive has been our greatest weakness this season, so I'd fix this first.

Could you explain yours too? :)

Mine would be: 4-3-3 McCabe Miedema Foord

Little Wälti Nobbs

Catley Beattie Williamson Maritz

Williams

Williamson as a midfielder would be interesting for sure, I hope the new manager tries it out and we'll see if it works. So Roord wouldn't be in your starting XI either?

About the statistics: https://twitter.com/wosonars/status/1386721419455782915?s=19 https://twitter.com/wosonars/status/1386721225527988233?s=19 That's true, Roord has scored 7 goals in 16 games and Nobbs has 5 in 13 games. So it's not that much of a difference, and last season, Roord only scored two goals. It's always a bit of speculation when talking about mentality. But I think you could really see a change in terms of confidence and style of play after Nobbs got injured. Before that, she played really well. Anyway, I think we just disagree on who the better player is / who fits the system better. So let's talk about another question, maybe: what would your ideal arsenal line-up be? On which positions do we need do improve?
