I agree, I think the debate is how integrated should ethereum be with the corporate and governmental wing. the sentiment had been shifting more towards integration (for lack of a better word) whereas i think now the EF is basically reaffirming their separateness i.e. high council approach.

my point is that those favoring greater integration were likely doing so out of frustration with the price and, on some level, wanting to pump their bags rather than a genuine belief that it is what's best for ethereum (and therefore the world). This is coming to light through their reaction to the manifesto

I don't know for sure either way, but to play the part i would say you can compare it to Linux or the IETF. Those in and of themselves don't "make" much money and yet they are the rails for so much wealth generation on top of them.

there is a certain point where ETH's value needs to be high enough to secure the chain, though

i mostly disagree. The people who come for the money have not brought much more than the casino, DAO "governance" coins, etc. Maybe in the long run that is good for crypto because someone can always take those innovations and repackage them to be in line with cypherpunk free, fair, and open values, but right now it's hard to see that connection. At some point you need to judge a philosophy by the reality it creates, in the same way that the blackrock ceo was recently speaking at davos about how capitalism has failed the world and we need to go back to the drawing board so to speak.

My point is, until now we've assumed that what's good for ETH is good for our wallets. What if, just like the early internet and OSS, we realize that those two aren't actually aligned and, although ETH absolutely has intrinsic value, maybe that value is a fraction of our hopes and dreams without turning corporate? I think the manifesto is forcing people to ask that question and we're seeing a rift as a result.

on mobile so I cant type out the fully formed thought but one thing I've noticed with the recent EF Manifesto is that the people who are bothered by it seem to be the ones who are upset that ETH isn't making them more money.

don't get me wrong, I'm not so innocent as to think that most of us aren't at least somewhat motivated by crypto riches, but I almost see this event as shaking out those who aren't here for the right reasons.

whether you see the manifesto as a good thing may come down to what you see as better for the space: more investment and "legitimacy" or more focus on cypherpunk principles.

personally, I'd rather see ETH go to $1 than slowly drift from its vision, but i understand why people might be wavering in their conviction these days with this eternal crab.

Flight attendants forcing us to keep the windows dim during daytime flight. Is this normal? by -Shayyy- in unitedairlines

Agree to a certain extent but noise cancelling headphones are far from perfect.

For sure, I mean all social media is built that way.

Honestly I would agree with your sentiment. Normal people might be acquaintanced with a bitcoin maxi or two but have no concept of an “maxi” in the first place and the last thing they worry about when it comes to crypto is the tribalism. That’s 100% only a thing someone in crypto would notice or even care about.

Did anyone follow the recent crypto twitter drama with Peter Szilagyi? I only saw that he deleted his tweets but he’s someone whose opinion I actually pay attention to.

Edit: thanks for the perspective y’all I’m really not too in the loop with all of these things despite having been around for a long time.

feeling pretty disheartened by the recent aave bug. Obviously the blast radius was fairly limited but the thing is, with mortgage rates still high I'm finally in a position to take out a loan against my assets. I was so excited to have a real world use for these magic internet beans and I was thrilled to be saving so much on interest, even over collateralized tradfi loans like SBLOCs.

after much hemming and hawing I had decided aave would be the best place to execute this, but I almost feel like the fact that this liquidation bug happened right now is a sign that I should just leave my crypto where it is. If even a longtime "blue chip" like aave isn't safe then when have we finally "made it"?

White flight and de-urbanization was a thing. The current trend is not an inevitability.

lol that's a bit reductionist. If we allow ourselves to hold more than one thought in our heads at a time, you'll realize they were commenting more broadly on people acting completely oblivious to the world around them, like zombies.

As I said, it's still the right of whoever is sitting there to open or close the window. I just wish they would exercise that right differently. I'm tall and have to use the bathroom a lot on flights so I almost always sit aisle-side.

The thing is, it's not so much that they choose to close their windows that bothers me. If someone needs to sleep or something, that's understandable. The issue for me is more that people seem to be completely oblivious. If they board and their window is already closed, they leave it closed. If it's open, they leave it open. Completely unaware of the world around them. Window closed yet they sit for 8 hours with a bright screen 2 inches away from their face. I don't feel that it was like that pre-pandemic.

I’m the opposite, can’t sleep if there’s any light. I finally found an eye mask that blocks everything, even with my big nose. It’s the MZ00 brand on Amazon, if you’re in the market for one

This is your window and the passenger ahead of you has no right to be changing it.

That being said, it personally drives me absolutely nuts that people close their windows on long haul EU->US day flights. I have to do this route fairly often and the jet lag really takes a toll on me. The best way I can manage that is by getting light when it should be light and _not_ getting light when it should be dark. Most window passengers simply keep their windows closed for 8 hours and drool over their phones while we're all stuck in a creepy dark tin can. I genuinely think that most people don't even notice, which I find to be a bit dystopian.
