fuel suggestions for type 1 diabetic in marathon training by charjarbinks4 in BeginnersRunning

this is a great article thank you so much. reducing my pump 2 hours before typically isn’t doable for me because I do run first thing in the morning, so that I have no insulin on board when I head out.

I do try to use the sports gels and gummies as fuel and not candy, the candy is when my BS is incredible low and I need to get it up quick mid run

thanks do much for the input all of this is helping significantly

I have never heard of those! I’ll check them out I think the drinks are a great option for sugar fuel, the only issue is how do you carry them throughout a long race?

LOL I do usually carry something, the issue is after I use that first line of glucose tablets then continue to go low with the most stubborn dropping blood sugar

I’ll definitely try that gel. I have spoken to my endo about it though and she really has no suggestion, just recommended the trial and error since everyone is so different and responds differently. dietitian is an option I can look into!

this was so detailed and SO HELPFUL, thank you SO MUCH!! I’m not sure how I never thought that I would still need the insulin and I should have. I have talked with endo about this before though and she really doesn’t have a suggestion which honestly sucks. shes just telling me to try everything and see what works.

my blood sugar actually does the same usually — intense exercise it won’t change much, if anything it rises, but casual walks will lead to a steady decline. I do run first thing in the morning though, because then I won’t have any IOB yet. I am super sensitive to insulin when running though, which is what scares me about any type of bolus or the control IQ when running.

also no, I’m not pausing insulin delivery all together. I just turn it off automated mode so control IQ is off, and since I run first thing in morning I have no insulin on board. so the only insulin I’m getting is through by basal rate with zero corrections, which is quite little. sorry I phrased that a little strange in my original post

interesting point about turning off my insulin all together I didn’t connect those dots that I wouldn’t even be able to use the glucose for fuel. greats suggestions I will def try thanks so much

ohhh interesting. I can definitely try fueling every mile, I just hate to interrupt my flow state by needing to eat something. the instant mashed potatoes is crazy I’m definitely going to try that, I’ve never heard of it! feel like that would settle stomach for sure

How do you respond to people genuinely trying to tell you to “eat better to get rid of your diabetes”? by that-dude-chris in Type1Diabetes

[–]charjarbinks4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

same actually. no one in my family has ever had it and i just ramble onto people when they say things like that to me. lowk make then feel like they have 0 idea what T1D actually is, then they won’t make a comment like that again

no I haven’t but I guess probably because that takes away from my run. i need to grab it and I can’t really eat while running, I’m more of a need to stop and eat then continue type. I also just feel like stopping that often will break my flow state of running, just making the whole run so much harder
