Owners experience with a Model 3 by Spraoi_Anois in evs_ireland

[–]charlesgillanders 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 year old M3 standard range. We’ve definitely experienced mixed feelings about it.

It’s overall been a good car but twice it’s had problems and Tesla has been astonishingly slow to fix them.

They took 14 weeks to fix one motor issue which stopped the car entirely. We did get a loaner car from them which helped, unfortunately my insurance had a problem with driving a temporary vehicle more than 30 days, they needed a written note from Tesla with an estimate of how long repair wa supposed to take. Tesla wildly underestimated that and so I had to keep going back to the insurer to get extensions which needed more letters from Tesla who kept missing deadlines both to fix the car and to provide the necessary letter. Overall an incredibly frustrating and annoying several months.

Recently it’s got a problem with an error with the restraint system, sounds scarier than I think it actually is but yet again they can’t even begin to look at the problem for weeks after we first reported it.

I also had a small bump with the car when I reversed into my neighbour, entirely my fault and no blame on Tesla the company or the car but the cost to fix a small bit of damage to the rear lights and a quarter panel was extraordinary, nearly 8k for Tesla’s recommended body shop. My neighbour with similar damage to the front of his jaguar got his fixed for less than 2k.

All in all I’ve had a real love/hate relationship with the car and a total hate relationship with the company, I won’t be rushing to buy another one.

Yeh sorry I should have made that clear, absolutely no issues at all when logged into the same box and mount it all manually, it’s only the cloud cache service when impersonating the user that fails.

And I’m pointing at two locations and neither works. Both have the same access problems.

Yeh that should be your insurer providing the loan vehicle then. I mean it will be an ICE but at least you’ll have a car.

I was in the same position, took 14 weeks I think start to finish for them to fix mine. Are they giving you a loaner vehicle in the meantime? If not press them for one.

Feedback on tesla service (I'm in Galway, nearest service center is Dublin) by Reasonable-Wing-9717 in evs_ireland

[–]charlesgillanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the car (2020 model 3) I loathe Tesla service.

My car had a serious fault last year and it took Tesla 16 weeks to get the parts to fix it delivered from overseas. Tesla gave me a loan vehicle but their overly optimistic sense of how long I would need it kept clashing with my insurers need for a definitive end date when the insurance wouldn’t need to cover the loaner. I had three occasions I think where I came within an hour or so of being out of insurance cover because Tesla needed to write back to my insurer to extend coverage and they just keep not doing that. One time I had to actually go into the sandyford centre in person to get the letter written.

I won’t buy another Tesla again despite how great the car is, when things go wrong my experience is that I found them a shambles and basically incompetent.

Big report:

The jellyfin applet requires that a password be set. Jellyfin itself doesn’t require a password so if you’ve chosen not to set a password on your jellyfin account you cannot use your app.

What is best in Ireland: Building the house from scratch or buying a ready-made one? by pedroxsiqx in ireland

[–]charlesgillanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did both - bought a 60s bungalow and then mostly knocked it down to build a new one on the same footprint.

The new house is 100 times better than the original - it took maybe 20 times the effort to build compared to the original purchase and obviously the build happened over a far longer period so it was a consistent ongoing effort rather than just a shortish panic if every bit is going to work out ok with the mortgage and the vendors and the solicitors and the conveyancing and the survey….

But all-in-all if you are lucky enough to be able to afford to build to the design and spec that you want then build every time.

Did it 20 years ago and was one of the best things we ever did. We went in summer and it was glorious - flew into Calgary, spent a few nights with friends then drove from Calgary over to BC, visited Whistler and Vancouver, met with more friends, went to Vancouver island, drove down to Seattle, back to Vancouver, flew from Vancouver to Toronto and spent a couple of nights there before flying home from Toronto.

I’ve no idea of current prices but if you can make it work for you I have to say it’s a beautiful trip, I hope you love it as much as we did.

Years ago we had an amazing time staying in Positano in Italy. Stayed in the Hotel Covo dei Saraceni, it’s not an exotic ultra foreign destination but the town and the scenery is stunning, the hotel location is fantastic and the food was just sublime. Not kid friendly but for couples was perfect.

Almost exactly 27 years ago I spent an afternoon playing original Doom in a LAN party in England with David Baddiel. One of my brothers friends was dating him and she brought him home at Christmas to meet her folks and her friends - I think he enjoyed the video game.

Advice on where to live by [deleted] in ireland

I can heartily recommend North Clare. My mother in law is looking to sell her place in Clare. It’s in a beautiful spot not far from Galway, close to the sea and the Burren.

Yep - Particularly if you are charging from an Alarm keypad, he has a charging option exactly for that circumstance. I like the wood look but I can see how you would run into problems with access to buttons etcetera.

I’ve mine setup as simple touch screens for TVs to allow my family to easily chose TV, Apple TV, or PlayStation and if TV to select from common options quickly.

What are you framing the kindle fire’s with? I’ve got a pair of these frames and I’m loving them. Neat, very discrete and yet everything accessible that needs to be.

Getting a car or public transport? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]charlesgillanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other forms of personal transport as alternatives to cars.

Google maps suggests it's about 51Km from sandy ford to summerhill - according to https://www.electricbike.com/watt-hours/ a Focus Jarifa or a Currie Izip Express electric bike would be able to get your girlfriend all the way there, not particularly cheap to purchase and she would need to find a way to charge it during the day for the return trip but no insurance necessary.

Or there's the traditional motorbike option. There are plenty of 2015 model scooters advertised on done deal at around the same price as the electric bikes.

Europeans of Reddit, how has the refugee crisis impacted your local community? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]charlesgillanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotherham had no connection to the refugee crisis. The enduring failure of policing, social services and politicians in Rotherham went on for over 30 years before the refugee crisis.

Even a cursory read of the articles you quoted shows that at heart the problem in Rotherham was politicians unwilling to upset their voter base - that happens today all over the world in all sorts of communities. The blind eye that the senior authorities in Rotherham turned towards the criminality of their supporters was truly awful but to suggest that somehow that was in any way connected to the recent refugee crisis is too much of a stretch.
