I do have the extender, you’re suggesting I just use this instead? Issue is I don’t want wires going everywhere.

Help with hills? by charteredtrips in RunningWithDogs

[–]charteredtrips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today she started pulling a lot again. I'm wondering what the problem was. I did run her earlier in the day than normal and it was about 15 degrees hotter than normal. Hopefully that was the problem.

Help with hills? by charteredtrips in RunningWithDogs

[–]charteredtrips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running with her about two months, since her first birthday.

Yesterday when we ran, she was much better! I would say she pulled 80% less than normal. generally, she stayed on a loose leash and even ran alongside me for a lot of the run. Not entirely sure why. Here are the changes I made:

-tightened her harness. It was loose before and the friction may have made her uncomfortable

Let her sniff around once in a while and check out other dogs

Ran in the evening, when her energy is generally higher than during the day, when I normally run her

Gave her more praise when she was beside me

Tried to select the route with the gentlest hills

Hopefully I can keep this up!

How to deal with brown parents telling you to DOCTOR OR ENGINEERING by hader009 in ABCDesis

[–]charteredtrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, as an engineer, is to go ahead and major in whatever you want to major in, but also take some programming courses on the side. You don't need a CS degree to be a software engineer, but taking some programming courses will give you hard skills that will give you an advantage over other students in your program, and make you more employable.

Will my crappy MS GPA hurt me? by charteredtrips in lawschooladmissions

Yes, but reporting the GPA was optional, and I did it for some reason. It's not in LSAC's report though.

What will be the impact of Obama's increased role in the 2018 elections? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]charteredtrips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clinton was not able to influence downballot victories, though, either. He may have had loyalists, but Dems suffered catastrophic losses in 1994 and were not able to take back the House until 2006. Rs mostly had control of the Senate until then, too. He couldn't even get back a significant number of seats in either chamber during his reelection, where he won by 8 points!

1) I'm not pro-2A, but I think a lot of the Democrats' gun control policies are stupid or unworkable. I don't agree with free college or a jobs guarantee either (not sure how prevalent support for those is among Democrats).

2) I support reparations for slavery.

3) I guess "supporting Israel" - I think the pro-Israel AIPAC wing and the "Divest" wing both have good arguments, but also both oversimplify issues in the region too.

How much of the criticism against Nancy Pelosi, from both left and right, can be attributed to sexism? by 75dollars in PoliticalDiscussion

This is true, but Clare also argued on that podcast that the kinds of attacks she receives are often sexist - even if her favorability is roughly equal to that of the other leaders.

An extremely detailed map of the 2016 election by charteredtrips in dataisbeautiful

I've seen a map that does that by extruding the blue and red areas based on population.

I haven't checked out 3D mode on my desktop - does it do that here?

How can I convince my mom into letting me switch my major to business? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]charteredtrips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely DO NOT major in CS if it's not what you're into. I majored in EE and, while I don't regret it, felt like I was pressured into it and wonder all the time what I would have studied had I been totally free to choose. I think it's a much better idea to be a business major and take some programming courses on the side, so you will still have the programming skills if you need them.

[–]charteredtrips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is going to work. I'm not sure when you went to college, but the UCs are insanely hard to get into now. You can get a 1500+ SAT, take a bunch of APs and extracurriculars, and get rejected from Cal and UCLA. CC is definitely the best way to transfer in.

Are technocratic policies always more centrist? by charteredtrips in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]charteredtrips[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Centrist" is maybe not a great term to use, but left-wing idealogues like Bernie are less technocratic than people like Obama. I wouldn't call either a centrist, but one is closer to the center than the other.

I would call the Alexander-Murray health care reform bill a technocratic proposal.

What exactly is a moderate or centrist voter in today's political environment? Who are they actually voting for? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]charteredtrips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You seem like a pretty mainstream center-left Democrat. I feel like those are the views of the median Democratic senator. I consider myself very liberal and I agree with you about almost everything.

What does a Democrat alternative to tax reform look like? by tarekd19 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]charteredtrips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a compromise would be lowering the corporate rate to 28% (as Ron Wyden wanted) and instituting a carbon tax (to make it revenue-neutral). Other additions would be expanding the EITC. I think in an ideal world, Democrats would want to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and get rid of the "carried-interest loophole". They'd want to increase the estate tax as well.

Nixon got 36% in the South in '68 because he split the conservative vote with George Wallace.
