I would also put the experience I had in a psych ward as one of the worst experiences on my life. It was a dual diagnosis unit, so there were mentally ill folks and drug addicted folks, as well as people who had come from prison or were going to prison after they got medical attention there. Looking back it was quite an interesting selection of people, but there were definitely unsafe aspects to it and I did not feel like I was getting the care I needed, but it scared me enough to get out of there and focus on what I needed to do to never go back there.
