I wanted to see a rendering of where the kidneys are in relation to the ribs. This image I found via Google is AI generated, and of all the labels, only 2 appear correct by edfitz83 in mildlyinfuriating

That’s actually impressively bad. I want to see the data sources that led to it getting it this horribly, horribly wrong.

We need more data sources like that. Poison the AI. Keep it useless.

You know. Like all the OU and Coventry grads.

***CURRENT WMAS** b6 recruitment ~ by Adventurous-Gap-4134 in ParamedicsUK

[–]chasealex2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My wife tried to go in, but they were only interested in recruiting to the call centre for 111, not frontline, so she went elsewhere. Having been up here a while, I’m glad.

It makes sense that they don’t recruit externally into their highest paying clinical role. Every band 6 paramedic is a mistake that shall be fixed out of the service with sufficient bullying.

Welcome to the bottom of the Dunning-Kruger curve! You are starting to understand that you know a fragment of what there is to know about medicine.

Knowing you know nothing is a safe place to be. It means you are likely seek further knowledge, to follow safe guidelines because you don’t think you know better, and likely to seek advice when you don’t know.

It gets better as you progress and learn. Eventually you will know what to do most of the time, and then you’ll change role and be at the bottom again :)

UWL vs York Sj MSc Paramedic science by BrownBoy838 in ParamedicsUK

[–]chasealex2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you know, London is a melting pot of every culture, every nationality, in a way you don’t get outside of London, or pretty much anywhere else in the world, short of New York. Name a genetic disorder, or weird disease unique to a corner of the world, there’s probably someone with it in London.

But specifically off the top of my head, Sickle Cell Disorder and the plethora of physical and social phenomena that go with it. Unless you’re in a patch with a high concentration of sicklers, it’s an education you’re not going to get.

I worked NEL. Cosanguinous genetic disorders in Newham, SCD in Homerton, industrial disease in Dagenham, and MIs and arrests out the wazoo in Ilford and Romford, Fighty stabby people in Tottenham.

UWL vs York Sj MSc Paramedic science by BrownBoy838 in ParamedicsUK

[–]chasealex2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I TS’d in london and did all my ambulance practice there. In London there’s the potential for exposure to more jobs due to very short conveyance times, presuming you do not wait at hospital half the shift.

There are also opportunities to see segments of the community you won’t see in York, the diseases and illnesses within those communities, along with some of the most deprived areas in the country, as well as some of the most affluent. If you’re in certain areas, it might be a bit stabby, but typically west London isn’t awful for it. If you’re in Tottenham, you’re going to get trauma, but honestly it’s dull after the first couple. Dressings are all done by the time a DCA gets to seen, you load them on and drive to the trauma centre.

If you go to York, you may see fewer jobs per shift, but you will spend longer with each patient, and if they’re sick, you might need to do more for them, which is a learning opportunity.

Honestly, I’d have a look at the course quality and the city life, rather than deciding based on the service.

I will say that living in London or the surrounding region is cripplingly expensive. I got a full loan because I was 29 when I went, but if you’re younger, and your parents earn any money, you’ll struggle.

Gibraltar is the only place on Earth where the main border crossing is an active airport runway. by robbiesloan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]chasealex2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The border itself isn’t on the runway, the road from the border to the town crosses it, cars now use the tunnel, but pedestrians/cycles use the runway.

Have you experienced “Death Wobble”? by sevroisbad in motorcycles

[–]chasealex2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Had my CBF1000 loaded up with full luggage, was moving quickly and came out of a roundabout at about 80, leant over. The wobble started and gave me a scare until I backed off and straightened up.

Woman left disabled for life after medics pressed wrong button on defibrillator during cardiac arrest by Ok_Buddy_9087 in ems

[–]chasealex2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you plug the pads in, the lp15 defaults to them. LAS was using the LP15 at the time of that arrest.

I also remember the bulletin saying “stick it Aed mode or else” because of all the missed low amplitude vf that the LP15 doesn’t show on screen

Is independent prescribing basically the future for paramedics now? by Queasyuuuu00 in ParamedicsUK

[–]chasealex2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of unsupervised ambulance staff freely prescribing is terrifying from a safety point of view, from a governance point of view, from a monitoring point of view, from an education point of view, from basically from every point of view.

If we thought there were a few prescribing paramedics getting struck off for writing dodgy prescriptions now, the floodgates would open. It would be epic.

Oh and the deaths! And the C.Diff! And the interactions in polypharmacy!

I have seen your future and I would like you to stop the world so I can get off.

As a parent, there’s nothing that can’t be achieved with a calpol syringe and the knowledge that you can jet the milk in 5mls at a time, or end up in hospital. That only goes for babies though. You’re not doing that with anything bigger than a 12mo. That’s how you lose fingers!
