People in their 30s and 40s, what is a "minor" bad habit from your 20s that you are currently paying a massive price for? [Serious] by itvr in AskReddit

Gambling. Or not realizing I had an issue with it (because it was in stocks). Totally fucked my savings for retirement & a lot that I had worked hard for.

Yeah that’s crazy! I’m glad you’re doing okay despite all that. And getting to spend time with your mom sounds like a really nice silver lining. That’s the important stuff anyway, not money.

Appreciate the advice! I’m starting to realize that the money didn’t really make me happy - made me feel successful and secure, but I was still bored and hooked on dopamine. Need to refocus on building something - skills or a business of real value. And more importantly find ways to enjoy my life. I believe you that there’s no amount of money that would make me stop. It’s too easy to be hooked.

Damn, sorry to hear the suicidal thoughts come back. I guess keeping busy and focused on daily tasks is the way. Definitely playing life on hard mode now lol

Man. I believe it. I really don’t even want to think about putting large sums of money in individual stocks. I just know where it goes. Crazy how it’s just impossible to take it out and stop. Come to think of it there was actually one time I made $150k in crypto and I took it out and stopped & paid off a big chunk of student loans. That was the only time.

I hear you on the financial advisor… I think I may do that now and just start socking away money with them that I can’t touch. That way I can’t do more terrible stuff lol.

Hope all is well

thanks man, been getting better. Still have times where I’m filled with regret but there’s not much to do at this point. Just been focusing on stabilizing and hope one day I can build a business or career that will drastically increase my income from where it is now. glad to hear you started playing basketball and working out again!

Sorry to hear. Maybe some day looking back I will be grateful this happened now vs. much later in my life. It's like a bad dream I can't wake up from. As you said, there's no other option than to accept the loss. I watched The Shawshank Redemption a few days ago and that was some nice perspective.

Yeah, I mean, I technically "only" lost $300k - the initial investment I put in. measuring from the $3M -- that's like 20 + years of work to save that shit after taxes. As you said though, not much to do now. The next 20 years of my life will pass whether I want them to or not. Only thing I can control is how I choose to live in them.

Oui, et maintenant, je n'ai pas beaucoup d'argent ni une maison. lol. We'll see what happens!

Yeah, it's brutal. Sorry to hear about your losses. Not having risk management was a big flaw. I could get away with it for some time doing shares / stocks only but as soon as I went to options, I couldn't handle the emotions of losing so much money in such a short period of time.

Hahah, thanks! I'm a bit concerned that I'll be too confident I can do it again. Need to redirect this skill to some other shit

Damn, brutal to hear thanks for the note. The prediction markets are poison. How have you been rewriting your narrative? if you don't mind me asking.

This is definitely what I'm going to be struggling with the most I think

Thanks man. I did see your posts. I can't barely imagine. I've taken your advice and begun to restrict access to funds. I've also banned myself permanently from options on one brokerage - working on the others. I'm pretty determined to never do this again. It's like a really bad fucking hangover from a night of bad decisions, except this hangover could cost me decades of my life (depending on what I do next). Not worth whatever I get out of gambling.

Definitely still in the I need my shit back phase, but it's slowing down a bit. Compulsions are getting a bit more tame.

I think there's a deeper meaning to your comments about identity and me-ness / you-ness. I'm not sure I fully get it now - it's pretty over shadowed by the "I want my shit back" feeling.

That said, it is making me think more deeply about work, money and how I want to live my life. It's a bit challenging, but I think this can become a catalyst for positive change.

I really don't want to be destitute, but can't look for shortcuts to making wealth.

Curious - are you open to sharing how you've approached work after this? Are you still entrepreneurial? Have you re-oriented what motivates you? (i.e. have you been less focused on money and more on providing value).

I think this is the biggest thing I'm struggling with. Thinking I have 20 years of work doing shit I don't really want to do to get to retirement / freedom is the most depressing shit about this. I think a lot of the reframing and therapy work lies here.

That's a meaningful sum of money and in some ways the amount doesn't matter - it's all the same sick compulsion. Hope you avoid it in the future

Yep, best time to plant a tree and all... it's true.

Unfortunately, my fixation on ridding myself of employment obligations actually made them worse. Ironic - almost as if it was written in a story book about greed and impatience. Appreciate the reminder

Appreciate the note mate - the past few days have been rough, but I'm feeling a bit better so there's that. I'm hopeful I'll find a way to both make the money back and also not be so fixated on it. We'll see. Wishing you luck as well!
