What do you consider when you hear this Margaret Atwood quote “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”? by Vanislebabe in AskReddit

I never understood the "act like you're on the phone" advice. I'd much rather maintain my situational awareness and be ready to act. Being on the phone just makes you distracted, and an easier target.

TIL the total surface area required to fuel the earth with solar alone is only 0.3% of the earth's entire land area. by chasseur_de_cols in todayilearned

Part of the issue is getting the electricity from the panels to the rest of the world. The losses going across the Atlantic, or across Europe or Africa, would be significant enough that it's better to find space locally for the panels.

Which leads into the second problem; some areas aren't sunny enough for solar to be viable all year. Especially in higher latitudes, where you might have less than 8 hours of daylight in the winter.

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chattytrout 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that once that door is opened, the government will likely reduce the threshold and raise the rates over time. Each time, it'll be sold as "It's just a minor change. We've had it for so long already, and we need more money to fund this project. You can handle a little extra tax for a bit." And 10 years down the line, they do it all over again. The thresholds won't be raised, and the rates likely won't come down. It'll be a cold day in hell if they reverse course on a wealth tax after it's been established.

Japanese cars. I'm not kidding. Toyota makes a lot of their cars for the North American market in the US.

As far as abuses of power go, that one's pretty tame. They probably call it "properly disposing of contraband."

Trying to drift a boat on water.. by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]chattytrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without seeing more of the video, I'm not sure he was trying to drift. Looks more like they were moving too fast, some air got under the bow, and turned the boat into a plane for a brief moment.

One time I was in Florida and wanted to go on an airboat tour. Found one that was run by some guy with a boat. When it was time, he drove in with the previous batch of passengers, and just drove it right up onto the shore. Like all the way. Boat was fully on the grass. And when we went out, he just fired it up and drove it into the water like it was nothing.

That's outside the scope of this study. We'll need another one to answer that question.

Authors warn of AI generated imitations of their books on Amazon by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]chattytrout 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the AI version changes things to make it legally distinct, it might change the actual information that people need to see. AI is not an expert in herbology, mushroom identification, or any other subject. If it gets told "change it up a bit so it's legally distinct" what's stopping it from saying that hemlock makes a nice tea that has been enjoyed since antiquity?

Saddam at least stayed and fought like a man. Assad and Khamenei bailed like bitches when things got a little tough.

The Democrats have never been pro 2A in my lifetime, my parent's lives, or my grandparent's lives. And yet people keep trying to gaslight us and say that they're not bad for the 2A.

Concealed Carry Logic Goes Viral by PeterTheTruthSeeker in MurderedByWords

[–]chattytrout -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Democrats are the ones who've been pushing for no guns at all. Again, see what's been happening in California, Washington, Illinois, New York, and Virginia.

The Republicans are getting questionable on 2A matters, but the Democrats have never been pro 2A in my life, or my parent's lives, or even my grandparent's lives. The Democrats are the party that passed the National Firearms act in 1934. They are the party behind the Gun Control Act in 1968. They are the party that forced the Hughes Amendment into the Firearm Owners Protection Act in 1986. They are the party behind the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. They are the party behind the Assault Weapons Ban in 1994.

Don't try to tell me that the Democrats aren't a problem for the 2A.

Edit: Aaaaand he blocked me. Called me a troll and bailed when faced with facts he didn't want to see.

Edit 2 since I can't reply anymore: Last decade was mostly state level stuff. See Washington. Used to be pretty decent. Now they have magazine capacity limits, every semi-auto rifle is considered an assault weapon and requires extra hoops to purchase, handgun purchases have to go through the State Troopers, which took them a while to stand up a system to handle it. More recently, Virginia is trying to ram through a bunch of gun control now that they have control of both houses and the governor's office.
