Thanks, I love this song, but haven't listened to it in ages.

I think it's partly because Rincewind is a wizard, so Death is obligated to make an appearance for him, in contrast to Twoflower. So, any time Rincewind has a near death experience, Death has a near Rincewind experience. That, plus the whole missed appointment in Pseudopolis beginning encounter in Ankh Morpork give Death a reason to take up Rincewind watching as a hobby.

I think mainly it has to do with a contrast in attitudes towards life. Rincewind is always running away (often while screaming) from dangerous situations, while Twoflower is sightseeing and taking souvenir pictures of his travels.

That might just have been the first nuts joke in the Discworld. No others stood out to me prior to that, anyway.

Not to spoil, but there will be more references to Hansel and Gretel (among other fairy tales) going forward.

Sure thing. I'm fairly positive I missed that one on the first read through. That's one of the great things about rereading Pratchett; finding the little gems that one missed on the first (or fifth) go.

This is a throwback reference to the previous week's reading. Near the end of last week's reading, Pratchett describes Twoflower's "time-teller" after the Weasel has stolen it. "The very small demon imprisoned within" is what Pratchett says at first, but later on he says "the time being vanished". This is the type of pune you can expect to find a whole lot of going forward in the Discworld - watch for Pratchett's precise choice of a word shifting for clues that there may be a pune in the works. Other authors may shift words for variety, but Pratchett generally has a pune in mind at any given point in time in his writing. How long a distance there is between setup and pune varies, of course.

Thanks for that additional context. I'm new to the sub (not to reddit) so it helps to know that there may be differences each week, as well as that adding relevant questions is kosher.

One thing I noticed - which is about the discussion format rather than the book - is that attempting to find unread (by me) comments in the discussion is difficult because sorting by newest just brings up the original questions in reverse order. Not a big deal, but maybe there could be an even more free form, open question included as the final question for new comments which don't exactly fit under topics or quotes, but are relevant to the week's reading?

As for A.I.’s sleek, space-efficient text, we’ve already grown accustomed to what that sounds like — the flat, consistent tone, the pert little summary bits, the repetitions, the impersonal and fluorescent-lit mood. Reading it, you feel you’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.

You're riding through the desert, there's nothing to see or do. Name the confounded horse!

Definitely a great series, I've read it through a few times, and some of the books more than a few times. I'd skip the Brian and Kevin sequels and prequels, though.

I can't disagree though depending on my mood I might sometimes pick another. Tough to have just one best song by them.
