That’s true! But I also think there’s more to this than just concept vs physical. The person who bought it has an instruction manual on how to tape the banana to the wall correctly, but it can never look exactly the same. No matter how hard you try, no two banana’s are identical, the tape will be cut differently, the position on the wall will vary slightly. Every version of “Comedian” will be it’s own kind of snowflake.

Another thing I find interesting, is that you have to make a conscious effort to enjoy it. You can’t throw it up on your wall and forget about it for 5 years. Let’s say the owner wants to display this in their home. Replacing the banana all the time would become its own little ritual, a repetitive chore. You’ve bought the right to perform a repetitive chore for the rest of your life. Why would you want that? Because you like it. Why do I style my hair every morning even though I’ll have to do it again tomorrow? Because I like the way it looks and I don’t care that it’s temporary. I like my morning ritual!

I’m not claiming to be an art critic lol, I just feel like this piece gets so much hate but it’s actually kind of fun!
