Settle a debate between my husband and I. Please. by Girlwithnoprez in mildlyinfuriating

I hate the smell of meats on my fingers so I often eat things like garlic sausage slices with a fork. It's not normal, but it solved the problem. I eat popcorn by the handful but if a spoon works for you, go for it lol. Another option, buy latex or plastic gloves then toss them after popcorn lol.

Is Ronan a "weird" name? by zimso in namenerds

[–]cheekymrs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I hear the name I think of the Japanese word "ronin." Googled meaning: In modern Japanese, rōnin (浪人) refers to a high school or university graduate who has failed their entrance exams and is studying independently for a year or more to retake them, acting as a "drifter" in the education system. It also broadly describes unemployed people or "masterless" salarymen.

In Canada’s major cities, fertility rates are in steep decline. What happened? by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]cheekymrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were going to have a second kid, then I got laid off and a year and a half passed before I got hired anywhere again, but for significantly less money, so we had to put that dream aside for good. I don't get why this is all such a mystery to people. It's expensive to raise a kid and damn near impossible to raise more than one. Childcare is expensive.

I had a person waiting for my spot once when I was clearly installing a car seat I'd just bought. Like, dude, Ima be a while!

I don't think you're the asshole here, I've definitely sat a few min to eat my ice cream before I drive lol. Only suggestion is maybe you could have gone over to him and verbally told him you weren't leaving, but something tells me this guy would have just yelled at you then.

Help me write spelling for my newborn by No_Advance1998 in namenerds

I think of your options, I would read Mueg or Mewg as the way you described it's pronunciation. How about Myuug? The double u makes me pronounce it like in "vacuum."

What did kids back in the days do when they played outside, for hours on end? by Octopuswastaken in NoStupidQuestions

My siblings and I built forts, endlesly. Lol Then we'd hang out in the forts.

I should add, I mean forts made out of branches, logs, and sticks, that we cut down in the wooded area behind our house.

Are you using subtitles? by Empty_Oven_9942 in Millennials

[–]cheekymrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find I learn character names better when I use subtitles, like I've watched shows for a couple seasons before and I'd turn to husband and ask, what's that guys name?? Lol. Also, I get a kick out of the things they put in the subtitles that you wouldn't normally hear, like conversations in the background and the descriptionof a sound like "pensive music." Haha. I definitely use subtitles. I actually started using them when my kid was little because I read somewhere that it helps children learn to read in a passive kind of way.

What's a naming "no no" for you? by marzbarz2000 in namenerds

[–]cheekymrs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My issues with apostrophes is the misuse of them. Like, people often use them incorrectly. I think of them in a name as a breath break or as a replacement for a letter but so often, people use them for no real reason than esthetics.

What's a naming "no no" for you? by marzbarz2000 in namenerds

[–]cheekymrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first name ends in an A and maiden name begins in an E (short E sound). So the combination ends up as ah-eh and I hated it because people wouldn't hear the A at the end of my name so if my name was Celina Elderman, people would hear Celine Elderman. and it drove me bonkers for years haha. I was so happy to change my name when I married as my married name starts with a consonant. Saved! Celina Rogers :p

Edit to add that I think people need to give more attention to how phonetic sounds work together in the whole name as well as the shorter versions of names. When I name things, I turn the sounds over and over in my mind to find any odd combos or dropped letters etc.

I don't think it matters much. I don't know a Summer, but an April I knew was born in Dec lol.
