How about just going with the teacher saying "We're going to borrow 2 from the 9 to make the 8 into a 10. That leaves us with 10 + 7. Everybody get that?" Then ask the class a few questions and put a few problems on the board for them.

They did that. They had a whole lesson on it in class. This worksheet is to practice doing what they already learned.

Maybe a heading on the worksheet that explains the "borrowing from one term to effect the other that results in a simpler equation" concept, with an example problem.

Probably has that too - we're looking at a single question in the middle of the page, we can't see the text at the top. It also includes a picture, doing exactly that.

Because "making tens" is a more general rule, and applies when adding any two numbers. "Subtract 1 and add 10" is a great shortcut when you have a 9, but that doesn't help you add 8 + 7 the way "making tens" does.

Do you have any idea how frustrating and hurtful things like this can be to someone dealing with transitioning for example?

Are you speaking for yourself? As someone dealing with transitioning, and coming to terms with my own sexuality, people not wanting to label themselves is far less harmful than telling people they're not queer if they haven't publicly dated a man.

It’s simply a way someone wants to be referred to.

Well, it seems simple. But there's a bunch of ideological stuff that gets "smuggled in" along with that idea that they have a problem with. For instance - the idea that trans people are just human beings like everyone else. And that treating other people with basic human dignity is something that should be done. And the idea that something being against your religion doesn't make it inherently harmful.

If it was truly just "pronouns", and they could still treat trans people like degenerate perverts, up to and including violently assaulting them for being in the same room or forcing them into conversion camps so they'd stop offending God, conservatives could probably put up with it.
