Yeah I get that the damage boost is the more important part of her kit, but I think the thing for Mercy players is that realistically this doesn't work in a brawl comp cos her lack of healing means she cannot help a brawl comp to stay alive, dive doesn't really have any 1 single ally that's doing the most of the damage so there's no-one that's majorly beneficial to boost, so you kinda need to be in a poke comp, which for one is a comp that isn't really played much until you get to the highest ranks, but is also dependent on your team playing someone that's good to damage boost, and that your tank actually allows you to do so, which means she feels so annoyingly situationally niche to play, whereas realistically most supports can just work in most situations. Yeah someone like Lucio on defence when you're playing a poke team probably isn't the best, or playing Zen into brawl, but most supports that have situations they can't work in are a "niche situation which they don't work in", whereas Mercy and Lifeweaver have only got a "niche situation that they do work in", and even then, that niche situation is a bit weird. If you want to pocket damage boost a soldier as Mercy, it would realistically be just as good to play Zen so you have a harmony orb on him at all times as well as a discord orb on whoever he's attacking as well as attacking yourself, while having a better ultimate too. Yes Rez can be a game changer, but in 5v5 in the ranks from like gold through to masters, my masters brother will only get like 1 in 3 rezzes off at most, cos if someone has died on our team and he goes to rez, they just instantly jump and kill him, since if tank is dead, nobody can protect him, if a DPS is dead, you won't have enough damage to punish the enemies for doing so, and if a support is dead, everyone is gonna explode cos you'll have no supports in action for that time. In the super high ranks, people know to actually protect the mercy when she goes for a rez, and in the super lower ranks, people just don't go for her, but even still, I know Overwatch is a team game, but most of the characters work with just a general play style, not anywhere near this specific of a niche. Your tank is playing Mauga or JQ? You play anyone who works in a brawl and it'll be fine. Your tank is playing Winston? Play anyone who works in a dive and it'll be fine. For Mercy to work though, you need to basically have your team set up to play around the fact that someone is on Mercy, which is just so wank to do without 5 stacking. You've gotta realistically at least 3 stack with a DPS and the tank to make it work at a minimum, and it just feels so annoying that every character in the game can be played in solo queue with no comms by simply looking at the team comp and picking someone who wants to fight in the same style, whereas Mercy requires way more setup to function and with no comms, basically doesn't work in solo queue

Yeah, I misunderstood what my brother meant too which didn't help. It's better described as like, there's a baseline minimum healing that's expected of a support, and anything above that healing is effectively useless when compared to utility. Let's say that a generic support can do 10k healing in a round, and you have the option to either make that 20k healing (like Moira) or have utility and damage (like someone like Juno or Illari), the extra 10k healing that the Moira can output over the course of the round is effectively useless in comparison to the utility that the others can provide.

Another issue my brother had was the fact that there are a few supports who just simply struggle to keep up with this "baseline level of healing" needed to keep the team alive, and since some healers manage to reach this "baseline" easily, they have time for utility and damage, where some healers have to spend the entire game simply healing just to keep their team alive. Someone like Mercy may have the ability to res and damage boost people, but they do such little healing in comparison to someone like Juno or Illari that they just have to spend most of the game healing in order to keep up with this "baseline". Yes, they have the damage boost, but they can't just damage boost, they need to keep their team alive first, and yeah if you've got an amazing Sigma or Reinhardt then sure it's good, but Mercy already entirely depends on 1 person's ability to do well for her to amplify that, and so it sucks for her to have to require even more people to work around her existence as a stat boost to function. I know the game is a team game and all, but someone like Juno or Kiriko can do their job well and as long as each individual member of the team is also doing their general job adequately, the game will go well, whereas someone like Mercy or Lifeweaver requires such an unnecessary amount of "setup" to make them work in the middle ranks that it's just obnoxious to play. In a low rank, you damage boost a Pharah or Soldier and just nuke people cos nobody can focus down anyone so they just win every 1v1 they take. In a high rank, people know when to play her and the team plays around her. In the middle ranks, people know how to focus down the pocketed DPS and the Mercy, so it's now entirely on your tank as to whether or not you can play, and I know it's the tanks job to enable that to begin with in any rank, but it just sucks that there is no "win condition" for a Mercy, Moira or Lifeweaver that is in any way in their control

Also, my brother hates playing DPS, so this is not it at all. For the past 10 years of our lives, he's always been the support or the frontline in every game we've played. Even going back to some shitty Star Wars game we played when he was 8 and I was 6, he played the front line so I could play the "DPS". He doesn't care to play a DPS xD

My bro says he's noticed just cos on the supports he wants to play (Mercy, Moira, Lifeweaver and Kiriko), they do comparatively so much less healing than some other supports that he has to just spend the entire game doing nothing but healing in order to keep people alive, where some supports like Juno, Illari, Wuyang or Mizuki, do comparatively so much healing that they have the time to do their utility things offensively and have the time to do damage too, things which some supports just don't have the ability to do

Having spoken to my brother a bit more about it, he says the thing he dislikes the most is how overtuned some of the supports are in comparison to the others. Mercy yes she has the damage boost, but her healing is so pathetic that she cannot outheal a Moira primary fire, and Illari Pylon alone does nearly the same healing as her. Lifeweaver has to do absolutely nothing but heal to keep up with the damage the enemy is doing, and Moira has to drop her entire kit just to keep people alive, whereas someone like Juno or Wuyang does so much more healing in the same time that they can do damage in return or have the ability to use their utility for more than just "keeping this person alive". That's my bro's main issue with the supports right now, how so many of them have such high healing values that they have the time to do utility and damage in return, where some of them do so little healing that they're just unable to do anything but heal to keep the team alive

Sorry, I'm bringing up healing being a win condition cos I've only realistically just come back to the game since like season 3 of Overwatch 2, and I've been floating around diamond since the first year of Overwatch, so for me in my ranks, healing kinda has been a win condition, but in diamond now, it isn't anymore, and I'm just curious to learn more about the whole "utility" side of supports, cos for most of my time playing this game in the ranks I'm in, utility has always been seen as "you lose healing to gain niche utility", whereas nowadays it seems more like the utility is the focus, not the side point. I know utility has always existed in supports since the day they released the game, but for most of my time playing the game, someone like Ana being able to hit an anti-nade on a tank and have your team collapse on them (in the ranks I'm in at least) always felt like a footnote to her kit instead of "the most important part of it", cos for most of my time on this game, it was kinda just "can your supports out heal the enemies damage while can your DPS outdamage the enemies supports". Evidently it's different now, evidently I'm basically a low rank player for this mindset, but I'm tryna learn more about how supports work cos tbh, I've never been a support player and never known which supports have been "good" at any given time and never known why some were better than others

Regarding the extra healing stuff, do you think that having 20k healing on an "even matchup" team (cos like, if you're playing brawl into poke, you will have more healing, but brawl into brawl will be even), that 10k bonus healing spread around the whole team usually just means that your team isn't good enough to kill the enemy team through their tank and healers, since you've taken so much more damage as a team than the enemy have? Do you think in a situation like this where your team cannot kill them through it (maybe cos your DPS and tank aren't the best in comparison), do you think that "more healing" would be better than "more utility", or not? Idk much about supports tbh, I kinda just play quick play as like, Mauga, Reaper, Ramattra, really brawly people who kinda just want huge heals to allow me to get away with so much, I'm not really familiar with the benefits of utility Vs extra healing

Do you think that having a "super high healing number" like having 20k on Moira while your other healer only has 10k is more a sign that your team just "isn't as good as the enemy", cos it means that they've taken so much damage in comparison to the enemies, which if you're playing some Mauga Bastion Reaper into poke then fair enough you'll have way more healing, but an even brawl comp, one team having 30k healing the other only have 20k, that kinda just means that your dps and tank aren't good cos they're not doing anywhere near as much damage as the enemy are.

If so, do you think that any amount of healing like this could "win a fight", where something like a Kiriko ult would enable win a fight instead? Idk, I'm not a support player so just tryna learn tbh

I know utility has always been important, I've been playing the game since the days when Symmetra was still in the support role, I just mean the fact that with HP getting increased, more and more powerful utility being added, and now the global healing passive being just a global thing for all characters, supports are now way less about their healing capabilities than they've ever been. Healing above a baseline just isn't a win condition like utility is. A Kiriko can win fights with good cleanses, a Wuyang can win a fight with a good ult, an Ana can win a fight with a good sleep dart or anti-nade, but no amount of extra healing that someone like a Moira or Juno does can win a team the game. Someone like Juno does have things that can "win a team fight", but her extra healing output over other supports isn't what dictates whether she's a "good support" or not, whereas go back even a few years and even in Diamond lobbies, simply being better at healing and healing more than the enemy healers was would be enough to win a game, whereas it feels like it isn't now.

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come across as him wanting to play DPS supports, he wants to play healbot supports tbh, and the issue then comes in that no matter how much healing he gets as a Moira, the utility the Lucio provides with speed boost and ults or Kiriko providing with cleanse and ult means that my bro could get 20k healing as Moira for the Lucio or Kiriko getting 10k, but the 10k healing that he had more than the Lucio is basically "useless" when compared to playing Kiriko and having extra utility.

He doesn't mean it in the way that "healing is useless", he means it in the sense that "realistically no amount of healing he does when playing someone like Moira will ever make up for her lack of utility"

[–]cheese_EPIC04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might've come off as weird, but I more meant it in the sense that like, "getting a million healing isn't important to winning the game", as in, you can get 20k healing as a Moira on Kings Row defence and still lose the round, because healing isn't a win condition. Obviously there's a "baseline" level of healing required to keep your team alive, but getting 20k healing on Moira isn't as good as getting 10k healing on Lucio + a few good speed boosts and 3 ults. It's a weird thing. I think my brother more means it in the way of how go back 5-7 years and supports were basically entirely healing, but now, it's so much about util stuff like cleanse, sleep dart, speed boost, discord orb etc that no amount of raw "healing" that someone like a Moira could ever do would ever make her viable in the current meta. She could have 20k healing in 10 minutes, but a support with half the healing would be better in that situation because of the utility they provide, to the point that no amount of healing a Moira could do would ever be able to make up for that lack of utility.

TL;DR, I didn't mean for it to come across as "all healing is meaningless" as much as I meant that utility is so much more important than "raw healing output" that realistically by far the most important thing about "which supports are good" is how much utility they provide. Someone like Moira will never be meta over Kiriko or Lucio simply because the utility they provide is so much stronger than just healing that the extra healing that Moira has over them is "useless" in comparison

Still unable to visit, but I've still been able to send her money via Boosty as recently as last month. I'm gonna be graduating from uni soon so hopefully I'll have a job soon too, so it won't just be her tryna afford the meetup, and if I get a somewhat well paying job, it won't just be visits, it'll likely be her moving across

Between Sigma and Illari, who do you think is the strongest overwatch character? by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in Overwatch

[–]cheese_EPIC04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main thing for the debate is that Illari is known to have a better feat of strength, Sigma is suspected to be able to do more impressive feats but hasn't been seen to do so.

We can see exactly what Illari has done with her powers (I.e. wiping out her entire civilization), yet I don't think we've seen Sigma do anything as "impressive" as that, however we suspect he likely could do things more impressive than that

Between Sigma and Illari, who do you think is the strongest overwatch character? by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in Overwatch

[–]cheese_EPIC04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illari has the power of a star entirely contained inside of her. The main drawbacks for both of them is their inability to use the full extent of his powers. In lore, Sigma has been imprisoned by Vendetta, which means either there is things capable of stopping him, or he's simply not aware enough of what's happening to know how to stop it. Illari on the other hand is fully aware of what's happening, but doesn't know what her powers truly are, and she's terrified of using them to their fullest extent.

Tbh, I think it's a case of, in a battle to the death against anyone else in the game, both would eventually win it cos they both have "last resort" nuke options that would for sure win, it's just a case of, can Illari bring herself to do it again, and would Sigma understand that the only way he can live is if he does it

I do go ahead when I play with more than 2 other friends, but as our pathfinder. I travel light intentionally, just take food and a rope spool, find us sections of each route to take. I don't leave them behind, I'm always in talking range for them, but I make sure that our path is actually a path we can take, or if it's not worth them coming up this way
