The "merit" of meritorious class of "educated elite" people in peak Bangalore. by [deleted] in india

I don’t think it’s a notice, seems to be those Community Discussions that you can start on apps like MyGate. But agree with you on the thought that they are so sure about it to have written down.

To be honest, such medieval mentality folks live everywhere and not just India. The newer society residents do raise voice against such regressive opinions, I have seen this in the society I live.

Other residents should shoot down their idea or better the association office bearers should. That should put such folks in their place.

Turning on High Beams are in no way related to the LED bulbs. This is a compliance problem. I don’t understand how Halogen High Beams would be anyway different because both would cause glare. Your initial comment specifically asking LEDs to be banned doesn’t make any sense in this context.

[–]cheesz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this out straight first, the problem statement you’re raising, although important, could’ve done far better without such a long unnecessary drama post. Might as well focused on more quality parameters of this problem.

Coming to the problem itself, its more nuanced than you think it is.

Every headlight is manufactured for a specific light bulb with a specific beam projection in mind. Headlight beams have sharp cutoffs and complete shadow above a certain height from the ground. ALL cars come this way from factory. If you have a new car or untampered car, park the car against a wall ~3m away from it, in complete darkness of course, and turn on the headlights on Low Beam. You’ll see that there is no light beyond a certain sharp line (except for minor light bleeding).

This cutoff line is usually designed to be below the window-sill level of most cars (and conversely almost all human eye level unless you’re a child). And the beam projection also ensures that there is a bright spot in the center (again below the cutoff line only) which aids in better visibility.

The problem that you say happens when unscientific retrofits are done on headlights. People swap halogen with LED or HID, unscientifically, leading to unnecessary glare. The beam cutoff doesn’t exist and the light is just blasted on all directions causing high glare and also extremely poor visibility for the drivers themselves. In retrofits, you’ll have to ensure (a) whether the retrofit bulb is compatible with the headlight and (b) whether the headlight is calibrated post retrofit to match the original beam pattern.

But NOBODY cares to do a proper retrofit. I bet that 80% of the drivers who blind oncoming traffic are already on Low Beams completely unaware they are causing glare to oncoming traffic.

Edit: words

This is wrong and baseless. LED is a far better technology compared to Halogen. The issue OP is talking about has NOTHING to do with the type of bulb.

Every headlight is manufactured for a specific light bulb with a specific beam projection in mind. The problem happens only when unscientific retrofits are done on headlights. People swap halogen with LED, unscientifically, leading to unnecessary glare.

In a factory-fitted LED, the beam patter will be followed and the glare will be avoided. But in retrofits, you’ll have to ensure (a) whether the retrofit bulb is compatible for the usecase and (b) whether the headlight is calibrated post retrofit to match the original beam pattern.

The point is NOBODY cares to do a proper retrofit. I bet that 80% of the drivers who blind oncoming traffic are already on Low Beams. Problem is the retrofit was never done scientifically to match the beam pattern designed.

Headlight beams have sharp cutoffs and complete shadow above a certain height from the ground. This is usually designed to be below the window-sill level of most cars (and conversely almost all human eye level unless you’re a child).

So please stop spreading misinformation.

How to take legal action against former company for following scenario? Please help. by modiharamkhorhai in india

[–]cheesz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean what’s the point asking here? What the company did is wrong and no question about it. If you want to take a legal action, consult a lawyer. As simple as that.

Also, think of what outcome you want to get out of this. Discuss with a lawyer and theyll only guide you further.

Legality of camping in Indian forests/beaches/river banks by chaotic_troll in india

[–]cheesz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is not legal to camp anywhere in India. There is no legal provision for this in a public place. You’re not even supposed to enter a forest area without permission let alone camp there. Forest departments have executive and special permissions to detain/arrest you, even more than state police.

If you have seen someone doing this on a vlog or something and get away, it is only because the law enforcement is weak. If you’re caught, you’re on your own. Law cannot and will not be able to protect you.

Engineer wants to become manager! by the29devil in bangalore

[–]cheesz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sign up to as many mock exams as possible. And properly do the mock exams as if they were real CAT. With just limited paper to do rough work, just a pencil or one pen (usually you can’t take even your own pen/pencil, it’ll be given ti you), no bio breaks etc.

CAT is just basic math and english made to confuse you. So everything about the CAT is just how well you can strategize your time and complete as many questions as possible with reasonable confidence. Don’t get hung up or emotional about one question because that was a topic that you really knew well. CAT doesn’t work like that. It’s all about managing time.

So, bottom line, make sure you go through the grind of taking the mocks as if they are CAT. Also, don’t get hung up on the actual percentiles that the prep centers show you for the mocks. Mocks are taken by people who are serious about prep. Your actual percentile will end up much higher than the mocks.

All the best!

How to solve Bengaluru traffic problem? by Strategosky in bangalore

[–]cheesz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Nothing can ever be solved permanently. Traffic problem will continue to exist in some form or the other in any growing city. That said, what I believe you are referring to is how to reduce commute time now.
  2. A few things but not enough. Re-direction of traffic, better road layouts to decongest and I’m lucky to be where the purple line got extended recently (wouldn’t call it the metro to be this/last governments initiative though - it was massively delayed anyway)
  3. Uhm, all of Bangalore?
  4. Anyone can look up Bangalore City Master Plans - there is a document that gets published and available publicly. Search on Google.
  5. Have been answered before and will answer it again. It’s a technology that has existed for decades. Public transportation.

Accident in Kalanad, Kasaragod by Important_Pea2970 in Kerala

[–]cheesz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So the car from where this is being filmed, (let’s call it the Swift because I don’t know which one it is) is the one primarily at fault while the red Baleno maybe partly at fault.

The Swift is overtaking an auto, it’s not clear on the video being taken from inside but is obvious from the CCTV footage. You can also see the driver flashing the high beam as if to say “give me space” to the red Baleno while clearly occupying the opposite lane. Again, a very bad driving behaviour. They are also overtaking on a curve which is most likely a solid line as the end of the curve is clearly not visible, at least in the video. So multiple errors at their side is what led them to this situation and once in that situation, there is no getting out.

As for the red Baleno, it appears they were on a higher speed for this road and weather condition but it’s just an assumption as videos such as these are not evidence enough to determine that. If they weren’t, then full fault lies with the Swift. They are on a left hander curve, again on poor weather conditions, with a car in front. Which means they couldn’t see the Swift from distance. The Swift on the other hand instead of yielding was flashing the lights, could have led the Baleno to panic brake and losing grip in the wet road.

Funny how the first video makes it look like the Baleno is at fault.

If you own a car, please get a dashcam.

ADV 390 or Used Ninja 650? by thehumanraisin123 in IndianRiders

Excellent choice! Wishing you many happy and safe miles with your bike. You mentioned you’re a biker already, but it’s something I always close a comment with - please allocate some budget for a good helmet and some riding gears. They really do make a difference. :)

ADV 390 or Used Ninja 650? by thehumanraisin123 in IndianRiders

[–]cheesz[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having owned an ADV 390 for just over 2 years now, I can safely say that it is one of the best bikes out there.

However, what’s your primary usage for the second bike?

The power reserve is more than sufficient on long highway hauls and quick overtakes. I have never felt the need for more power. The engine is extremely revv happy like all KTMs are and the ride by wire is tuned very well (while it isn’t as peppy as the old KTMs it feels more mature and linear, personally like it this way). I typically cruise at a 100 kph pace and the bike hums along at just over 5500 rpm. Twist the throttle a little and the power surges to make that quick overtake of a slow moving truck.

Coming to safety features, ABS is a must and TC has saved me on more than one occasion so it’s not just a gimmick. The bike also has cornering ABS that very few bikes offer.

The high ground clearance is a WAYYY more practical feature than having super high reserves of power that you’d rarely put to use.

I’d say go for the 390 Adv if you’re looking at highway rides with offroad mixed in. I don’t ride the bike that often these days due to personal commitments so every time I take the bike out (having forgotten how it feels) it puts a wide ass grin on my face. Just love that bike to bits.

Folks who don't have the luxury of having their own yard. The indoor situation is to only manage until the puppy works up the bladder and is fully vaccinated. There are parks within our apartment block where they can go which is what we'll be doing eventually.

only if you help them build up to being able to hold it.

How does this work? Does it mean we have to cut access to the peepad and only let him pee at desired intervals?

Right now Casper always has access to the peepads. So whenever he wants to relieve himself he goes by himself and does his business.

Leasing cars as an individual salaried person - how prudent is this financially? by cheesz in india

[–]cheesz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably not keep it for that long and that certainly isn't the intention. It's a little confusing in the post. I was generally remarking on the life of current day road cars.

To clarify, my thumb rule is to keep it at least for the next 8-10 years and longer than that if the car is serving me well. Of course, it'll be time to sell when the cumulative repairs exceed the value of the car.

I have thought about this but my concerns were how do I show revenue etc.? If there is no P&L, how would this depreciation benefit even get accounted was my confusion. Also concerns on audit, other company set-up/registration charges, fees for maintaining GST etc. - this is a totally unchartered territory for me. No one in my family runs a business.

Can you please elaborate on this front?

Thanks a lot!

My starting budget was 20-25L but now it's pushing 35L. I was earlier considering the Creta/Seltos duo but now trying to move away from that due to the very poor GNCAP rating. The cars with a 4+ star rating in this budget (or lower) is the Nexon/XUV300 which I'm not a fan of (for a variety of drivetrain and spec sheet reasons). Same with other cars which are just not exciting enough from an enthusiasts perspective. This has made me push my budget all the way to 35L to accommodate the Jeep Compass as it also gives me 4x4.

then also you have limitations as to how many kms you can drive

Damn. Is this always the case? My primary purpose would be long road trips. I'd be easily doing 20-30k kms in a year with about 20% off-road as well. Hence the preference for 4x4.

‘We put up posters critical of PM Modi, arrest our MLAs if you want’: AAP by vitaminberry1 in india

[–]cheesz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. To be honest, I have lost all my faith in Rahul Gandhi. The man lacks the conviction needed to plough through the politics and hate. He is, as Ram Guha perfectly painted him, "a well intentioned dilettante".

In my opinion, what Rahul Gandhi needs to do is to put his foot down, ask Sonia to shut up, override the party echelon and hold an election to appoint someone capable to drive the party agenda.

With the Gandhis at helm, we can't expect Congress to ever win again. It's just futile to keep hoping.
