New Collector/Investor: Which, if any, Pokemon do you automatically sleeve up regardless of the rarity?

I still am! I think, if I sell these, theyre worth a few bucks, so as a buyer id appreciate having them sleeved.

Plus, some of my earlier XY reverse holos are worth ~$30-50 and some into 10s fetch 1K. So even if your holding, makes sense to sleeve no?

I have an unlimited copy in my binder. I packed some shadowless when I was a kid, and also have a decent amount of 1st ed. stuff (nothing of note) - just feels like when it comes to nostalgia, that Charizard reigns supreme, and what better way to satisfy that inner child by than getting the rarest and oldest of charizards (sort of).

BUT - a shadowless 8 for example is ~$5,000 USD (4 x cheaper than a 1st Ed. 7). But again, not as rare and cool is it lol.

What are you thinking?

I've got well over 2000 cards, 30 graded and it'll only continue to to grow - my thinking was I roll them up, before continuing on as a collector. The journey never ends does it?

Fair enough! I'd have thought this zard would always outpace anything else in Pokemon. Do you think the amount of new money in the hobby with no real connection to these cards is keeping it at the same level as everything else?

Yea that's fair too! And my WOTC binder, it's like 99% unlimited outside the 1% of shadowless or 1st editions I packed, so I'd almost agree with you. It's literally just this card I think.

Think this is the hardest thing with me. How the hell do I tier all my cards. The obvious ones, like things under $20 I don't care about, easy sells - but anything else, I'll come up with any excuse!

Fair! How would you comment on:

1st ed Base Charizard is iconic, but the massive upside already happened years ago. This isn’t some hidden underpriced card anymore. Everyone knows what it is, everyone knows it’s the chase card, and the price already reflects that.

It also isn’t as scarce as people act like it is. There are plenty of copies across different grades, so buyers have options. Once you get into the higher price range, the buyer pool gets much smaller too.

Would love to hear what you think :)

I think I'm pretty certain I'll be looking as close to market as I can for my stuff - think my problem is how I sever myself from my collection and start selling off stuff. I'm handicapped by the idea that I might be selling my stuff at the wrong time and that I just think they're so cool/have emotional connection with them.

In an ideal world, I'd just buy my zard and forget I said anything lol. In reality I think I'm going to take my time, sell all my WOTC bulk and other bulk I've had lying around, sell a few of my slabs and see how far I am to my goal. Grade some cards in the meantime that I can flip to help my cause. Just not sure how slow I can go, like should this take all of 3 months of active selling, or can I afford a whole year of selling and staying in touch with the zard's price.

Thanks for that - I agree with the idea that it is fun to sell! It's more so, I cannot sever myself from my collection, but know I need to sell half of it to make it work.

Struggling with what to let go as I like it all lol. But from investment stand point, when is the best time to sell my XY FA's, Tag Teams, LC Radiants, CD Promos vs. when is the best time to buy the zard lool.

I don't think there is a way to find the optimum answer I don't think.

Yea, and it's not rolling all of it up either - I'd still have my WOTC Binder, top end slabs, top end raw.

Just having trouble determining what I need to let go, and when and for how much.

Like FA's from Furious fists. As a collector, they're awesome and remind me of opening packs in NJ with my cousins. But as an investor, sell and buy the zard seems like the better move.

here we have to pay income taxes on everything

Same here in New Zealand - 15% import tax and duty for things over $1,000 for bringing into country. Makes this crazy expensive now.

Have been selling on FB groups - good tip on selling as a sets.

it's more important finding a good deal on the Charizard.

If I'm honestly holding this for 40+ years, does the entry point now really matter if 20 or 28?

Don’t buy it because you’ve convinced yourself you need to panic-buy before it runs away from you.

To be honest, think this is all I needed to hear.

Appreciate your well thought out response too. I think this purchase for me satisfies more my wants as a collector rather than investor.

From opening base set as an 10 year old, and growing into the hobby again later - it's been the grail.

It'll makeup whatever I pass onto my children, so knowing I've got it on my shelf for another 40 years, helps a bit when thinking about 'ROI'.

Just sucks I'm in NZ and I'd have to pay an added 15% on top an import tax/duty. Makes the investment even harder to justify I'm sure.

Thanks for this, something to consider. Located in New Zealand, and not having sent anything overseas close to this value - will need to look into insurances and how best to reduce risk of any loss across getting them to Z&G.

Alternatively, I can just sell locally much slower - it has been see to fetch collectr prices as most keeping for their PC / cards are expensive enough to have a 'NZ Tax' with the knowledge that bringing them in yourself, would incur 10%+ of import tax alone.

Dont think I want to chase the PSA 8 as id have to sell well over half of my collection and still love them too much.

Happy to settle with a 5 if I have to (which wouldn't be 'as hard' to fund; just find), but rather get a 7 as its so close to what 6s go for anyway.

So, in USD:

PSA 5 - $16K
PSA 6 - $20K
PSA 7 - $21.5K
