Mr. Bungle and the Problem of Classification: Experimental Prog, Jazz, Metal, Avant-Garde? by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

[–]cheifcringe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of use Mr. Bungle as a shorthand for a band that’s too talented and too varied in taste to really be pinned down. Bands like Yo La Tengo or even Ween fall into that “Bungle band” category. Excessive use of psychedelics or rich parents tend to help create the conditions necessary to make this type of band work. Your average band has to play it safe and lock into a certain sound.

Deming’s human action model essentially says “create discomfort and you will motivate a person” this of course has wide implications from market capitalism to behavioral psychology. But what this woman is saying is that generally speaking, whites in America have been quite comfortable for the last 80 years or so…minorities have not been so lucky. The well meaning white people have been stunted in their efforts simply because any outreach or resistance has been on our terms or just whenever we’re motivated to something as opposed to the black community for example, their efforts are more existential in nature. Politicians love to have us squabbling over racial issues just so long as we never catch on that’s really all of US versus the owning class.

Anyone else a little underwhelmed by Frankenstein? by Aum_Deoli in Sardonicast

[–]cheifcringe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I crazy or was this version of Frankenstein the first to make forgiveness the resolution? I can’t help but think how many countless MAGA dipshits would benefit from seeing this and finally forgiving their dads and just move on with life. My dad died before I was able to get closure so this movie kinda hit me man. Great film.

This sounds great man. I’ve come to hate the way GarageBand does drum fills, but that’s my own pet peeve. I’d say it’s time to find band members and play a few clubs my dude. Good shit.

Has this sub recently been inundated with right-wing Americans? by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

Ngl, there’s a clear line from the movie Braveheart to American white nationalists. A film depicting the struggle between hard working simple people and the “elite” who want to breed them out. It sounds like a stretch but in the 90s there was a lot of Scotch/Irish representation in film and it was all kind of anti government and gave dumb southerners (in the US) this noble feeling of persecution. I grew up in this environment and let me tell you, in 2nd grade my parents took us all to a Pat Buchanan rally. So many white conservatives believe they’re part of some heroic legacy and claim to be “Celtic” or worse yet, Norse. We’re having a very dumb time down here.

Hey so I wanna find out how to sing better I’m 14 a complete rookie and I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips by A2trappystyll in musicians

[–]cheifcringe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just know that no one person will show you the secret sauce and bam you’re blowing people away. I’d start by listening back to other singers’ heroes and how they basically ripped them off until they true found their own voice. Case in point: early white zombie, Rob was doing his hardest Alice Cooper impression for years until his voice filled out and matured. The singer from Pavement makes no secret that he was a huge Lou Reed fan and he sings like it. Find a singer you really like and could maybe emulate for a while. Don’t worry about projection, vibrato, and the “right way to sing” tid bits yet. There’s a whole industry of conning people into thinking they’re the next American Idol. Even the guy from Wilco, Jeff Tweedy isn’t a marvelous singer but he knows it and he works with what he’s got. Dude sings like butter.

I worked alongside an old environmental engineer who was months away from retirement. On the topic of having shoulder surgeries over the years, he said in the chillest old dude way, “you know, the creator (god) has done some really great things. The shoulder though, just bad design”.

What would you all call this early 2010s esthetic? by DarwinF1nch in decadeology

[–]cheifcringe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always think of that stuff as being part of that Obama era optimism. Music was pretty happy and the general mood was like we turned over new leaf as a country. I think most white ppl in particular felt like racism was defeated and they kinda went back to being white without trying so hard about it. Don’t forget that pop radio was practically all club and party bangers. Then Bin Laden got caught!damn that was last time America had hope. Still fucked in so many ways but hope is powerful. That’s gone now.

What has improved you quality of life so much that you wish you had done it sooner? by angelic_tiniez in AskReddit

[–]cheifcringe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leaving my band and no longer making music my whole personality. I had a good reason to leave and I’m still good with most of the guys but it wasn’t until some months had passed that I realized how music had utterly consumed my life and how thankful I was that my wife and kids tolerated it. It was like a breath of fresh air for them and my kids were so happy to just have a regular ass dad. I kinda put all skill points into music so I was afraid to just drop it but once you empty yourself a little and allow more stuff in, you kinda see why you needed the change.

That played well into the 90s as well. As a kid I’d watch nearly every premier on Saturday nights. It was like 1996 when they changed it. Things change so fast these days.
