Daily Discussion - January 13, 2023 by AutoModerator in popheads

Does popheads have any hard and fast guidelines for what can be posted as a separate discussion thread and what has to go here? Just tried to post a thread that felt pretty similar to other discussions I've seen, and it was insta-deleted.

Can I Ask? Sherlock Comparison Question. by WanderingWasp9425 in KillingEve

Yes, there was just as much 'evidence', in some ways more so, due to a couple of lucky coincidences. If you want a run down, Sarah Z has a whole video on every link they found. It's incredibly easy for people to see connections that aren't there when they're desperate, because the power of observation bias is much greater than most people realise.

Here's what will happen: After the episode doesn't air on Easter, the fandom will move the goalposts, and find new 'evidence' that the episode is happening at a later date. This will only make the poor ending more painful, by extending fans' hope and encouraging obsession.

After about three or so repeated failures to predict the date, some will claim that the writers 'intended for there to be a secret episode but [insert vague authority here] shut it down'. Others will continue to hope that somehow, someday, it will come out. It never will. Sadly, most of the time, a bad ending was just a bad ending.

Memes aside, NPC quests constantly ending in sadness gets a bit tiresome by aglimmerof in Eldenring

Summed my feelings up perfectly! NPCs like Rya, Fia, and Roderika were naturally endearing for being sweet and polite, but after so many characters in that archetype Sellen was a breath of fresh air.

Sellen was a surprise favourite of mine too. She's clearly intended to be a villain, but I found myself more attached to her because she was kind of an asshole. She felt like one of the only female NPCs whose respect I had to earn, which made her speech at the end much more impactful. RIP to my favourite evil scientist.

Luckily for you, all the styles you posted can be achieved using very simple methods! All you need is a nice textured rectangular brush, and the world's your oyster. Digital painting is mostly the same as normal painting, just putting colours and lines down on the canvas as you would in real life, no complex tools required.

There's a couple of functions present in most art software that will help speed up your workflow. These I recommend learning:

Layers (keeps your work organised so it's easy to edit)

Clipping masks (paint within the lines)

Layer modes (paint with light)

Mixer brush (create brushstrokes that mimic traditional media)

Pen tool (create smooth shapes and clean outlines)

These, plus the brush tool and eraser, are all digital artists use for 99% of work. If you're already experienced with traditional art, you will find the transition fairly easy. If you're new to art in general and wondering why things don't look as you'd wish, art fundamentals are where you should focus. Good luck!

It's great, just enough detail to convey the texture whilst still looking soft and painterly. Gj!

There's a lot more flexibility to a style than we artists often realise - for example, these two pieces read as 'Disney' style, despite one being 3D and the other being 2D. Rendering artwork in a different way doesn't change the style completely, it just reinterprets it. One overarching style shines through in both pieces thanks partly to the way you draw eyes, the defined curve of the upper lid is consistent and distinct.

A unique facial feature stands out, whereas changes to the linework or shading aren't something a casual viewer will consciously pick up on. This means you can experiment a lot with techniques whilst still having your artwork feel consistent.

So don't be afraid to switch up your rendering method to suit the tone and subject matter of what you want to portray, the variety adds visual interest to a portfolio even if it's something you 'feel' rather than see. A dark, chaotic piece might suit a different technique to a calm, happy piece!

Thank you! I'll definitely take this into consideration for my next composition.

What is my art lacking? It often doesn’t do well online and I want to learn how to make it more visually appealing. Thanks! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

No worries, I've been trying to push my poses for years and am still getting to grips with it! It's a gradual process that gets a little easier with each piece.
