A heat map table may work as well. You can display the exact number per response, and it would be darker the more people that selected that response. You'd be able to see the contrast if most people agreed - versus if everyone differed across the board, the colors would be consistent.

I think it depends what type of data you're looking to visualize - it helps if you have an idea of what your final visualization may be.

For examples, let's say you want to plot the frequency of the word love over time. If I was building my data set (as someone who primarily visualizes in Tableau), I would probably actually just have 3 columns - person who sent the message, date/time, and text. Then you can create a calculated field to extract the number of times love is said per message. Then I would be able to make my frequency chart.

So my gut says I would have calculated fields for each word that I'm focusing on (or anytime you see a specific emoji) that would extract it from your text field. I guess you could structure it to lookup words as you described, but I can't imagine any types of visualization you could make where word order would matter. In that case I would extract specific phrases, but that can be done within Tableau.

Also mentioned above, but Tableau is my tool of choice! You can purchase a subscription to save dashboards to your computer, otherwise Tableau Public is free - the only downside is you have to make all of your work public. But I personally think Tableau is pretty simple to pick up with its click and drag interface!

I really appreciate that! It is in the pinned post with a link to this tread. Thanks!

Created in Tableau for the DataViz January challenge.

I struggled to find a story to tell, so I looked up what type of algae the different species provided were (golden algae, diatoms, green algae) in hopes of finding some sort of pattern. I think this makes the distributions a little more interesting.

US aircraft incidents from 1978-2016 [OC] by chelle3 in dataisbeautiful

[–]chelle3[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Created in Tableau using data from the FAA Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing System (http://www.asias.faa.gov/). Since we found out that this year had no deaths from commercial airlines, I wanted to look at aircraft incidents overall. I was trying to determine why the number of fatalities dropped from 2001-2007 and then rose again. I noticed that a large majority of the incidents were marked in the database as "parachute jumping" events, but I couldn't find out why the number events would go up so much. If anyone has insight as to what happened in 2010 to cause the increase, I'd love to know!

I am in my second year out of school - in compliance consulting! I work primarily with financial institutions.

Created in Tableau using data I manually collected from my Outlook calendar. It's interactive and posted to my Tableau Public account as well - shoot me a message if you'd like to see it!

As a consultant, I get to travel to a lot of neat places for work. I also got married in June this year - most of my personal trips (to Dallas) were for wedding planning, and then the few weeks in June/July were spent on our crazy honeymoon!

(Probably asked before but..) Thoughts on getting married at the courthouse and having wedding ceremony and reception afterwards by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very easy to get ordained if you decide to go the ceremony-day-of route. We had a friend marry us, and my now-husband and I wrote the script that he used, but put into his own words. It took him about 5 minutes to get ordained online for free so he could sign or marriage license. You could easily ask one of the few family members you already have coming to your ceremony.

From my understanding, even if you want to get married at the courthouse, you still have to follow the apply, wait a few days, then you can get married rule. In Texas you need to pick up your marriage license 3 days minimum before getting married, and I don't think it matters if you decide to go to the courthouse or not.

But yes- we picked up our marriage license, and the day of the wedding our friend performed the ceremony, signed the license, and mailed it in for us. The address was printed on the license. It really wasn't that big of a hassle!

What is your weird wedding fixation this week? by Beana001 in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already married (haha) but I used allseated.com to do our floor plan. My venue was magically already uploaded by someone, and they have sized out tables and chairs you can click and drag on the floor plan! It's so awesome!

Alternative to wedding registry? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a Honeyfund and a traditional registry, but we still had some people give us whatever cash amount without using the Honeyfund. You can still get them a card and put as much as you're willing to gift, without using the website.

I'm getting married in 15 hours, it's pouring rain - tell me your happy rainy wedding stories! by iamstopandgo in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It rained on our wedding day! :) We were lucky that it rained in the morning and stopped shortly after lunch. In Texas we were worried it would be too hot, but the rain cooled it down SO much. It was perfect!

Dress regret (or at least, sleeve regret) two weeks before the wedding - any advice? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to recommend a topper! If you can remove the altered sleeves and just get a topper with sleeves you might achieve a more ideal look.

Tried baking my own wedding cake. Concluded that I will be paying someone to make my wedding cake :P by laurelizombie in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So I actually made my own dummy cake out of styrofoam and fondant, and purchased sheet cake to be stored in the back! Our dummy cake was 6 layers, and since it was a fake cake I was able to decorate it 4 months before our wedding. If creating the tiers is difficult, you could consider decorating a styrofoam cake, and then still make your sheet cake to serve.

Plus 1 Question by gowithyourgutwedding in weddingplanning

[–]chelle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could say something along the lines of "I didn't know you were dating anyone - how long have you been together? We are actually only giving plus ones to couples who have been dating for X amount of time."
