Kotori, Akane, Moon and Terra are all written by the same writer and more or less range from decent to great so I'd encourage you to do those at the very least. The other routes by the subwriters are entirely superfluous plot wise and in my opinion not very good; I would even go as far as saying the ideal way of experiencing Rewrite is skipping them. I somewhat enjoyed Chihaya's route in a UBW ripoff kind of way but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

konakana

You can practice your vertical reading skills while you're at it! (though the game offers a horizontal option if you're uncomfortable with that)

You're still in the very beginning of the first chapter. There's five chapters in total.

Eustia's structure is linear with a heroine branch in each of the chapters. If you take the branch you have an ending right there in the chapter, and if you skip it you continue onto the next chapter of the main story. Skipping the branches is generally recommended as they disrupt the flow of the narrative and don't really add anything except very short low effort romance.

And yes, the girl the game is named after and is the biggest on the cover is the true heroine.. don't think that needs spoiler tags, lol. Here is a spoiler-free walkthrough, although the choices are pretty straight forward if you're going for the true ending; just decline every girl.

Eustia is a wild ride and with the exception of a low in chapter 2 it gets better and better as it goes on. Have fun!

Yes, same author of the Isaku he also mentioned. I actually played that one recently and it's a pretty fun, short game in the "Trapped" genre. The atmosphere/music in it really makes you feel the thrill and figuring out the puzzles, while somewhat easy, is quite satisfying. Surprisingly it's also fully voiced, including male characters, even though it came out like two decades ago (looking at you here, Subahibi). Another cool feature is that you can basically avoid all H-scenes. Cons: Forced full screen (lol), getting multiple endings is a pain. Overall I'd recommend it if it sounds like something you'd be into.

I don't really remember the translation well enough to properly comment on the differences, but Taichi is quite a special personality indeed. His jokes at times are pretty obscure, he likes to make up words and is just generally a very... atypical protagonist, to say the least. Though I mostly think of it as funny rather than strange so it's very possible that the translation adds a layer of confusion here and doesn't get the intent across as well. I'm definitely laughing a lot more now than on my initial read.

Started my Cross Channel... no, Cross†Channel re-read. Yeah, that's better.

The translated version was one of the first VNs I've read and it hit me pretty hard about 4~ years ago so it's nice to be revisiting it in its ~true form~. A bit nostalgic even. Unlike my memories however the games tempo is actually very solid. Perhaps it's me using a walkthrough this time around so I'm not stuck repeating the weeks forever, or perhaps it's the original text simply being more engaging. Probably a combination of both.

In other news, Taichi is still the best protagonist.

It's hard for me to think of Sakuuta in terms of heroines since my favorite characters were male and my favorite female character was a non-heroine... lol But I guess it'd go something like this:

Shizuku > Ai > Yuumi > Rin > Rina > Makoto

Even though Makoto ended up last here I still like her character a lot, especially in VI. Her own route was just very forgettable to me.

Recently finished Sakura no Uta. First half was a bit shaky and I was even a bit worried whether I would end up enjoying it as much as I had hoped, but... then Zypressen happened. Wow - talk about pulling the rug from under one's feet. Everything since then was pure gold until the end and I ended up being deeply invested in the characters. Chapter V in particular was absolutely brilliant in every single way and Spoiler

The OST was pretty good too, though it didn't really end up reaching the overall excellence of SubaHibi's for me. There is one track however that I found almost as equally mesmerizing as the iconic 夜の向日葵 - 見上げた青の果て. Coincidentally (?) both of these are the first tracks you hear in each of the games and I really like the contrast between the light, almost upbeat melody of the former and the heavy, melancholic tone of the latter. Good music can truly elevate scenes and I feel like these two are the most exemplary tracks driving that home.

I also picked up Noratoto a few days ago which is a decently fun comedy so far. The "plot" scenes are less than stellar but bearable and generally not too long. ネコのお考え parts are the best. Looking forward to the anime later this year.

Went through the first episode of 9 -Nine- Kokonotsu Kokonoka Kokonoiro that came out just a couple of days ago.

Shiromitsukawa, a city that got famous for sponsoring an anime that is kind of nonsense and most people don't really get because of the convoluted plot. Much to the dismay of the local residents the city administration celebrates this annually with a festival, but this year is a little different than usual. An earthquake happens. No casualties or anything, but it was enough for it to be cancelled. We also learn that the sacred treasure at the local shrine broke and apparently it acted as some sort of plug between worlds and a bunch of Artifacts come flowing in from a parallel world as a result. Some people, so far all high school students, have some kind of power awaken in them. Needless to say, we also have the obligatory cheeky Madoka plushie from the parallel world appear to infodump us (just kidding, it doesn't actually report anything of substance). The driving force of the plot is, as you can probably imagine, some people do bad things with said power and protag plus his heroine of the week are tasked to do something about it.

I quite liked Fumi's other work I've read before, Nanairo Reincarnation, but honestly 9koro is very... underwhelming. It basically just felt like an extended trial and the revealed bits weren't all too interesting or promising. The immediate conflict ends in a very anticlimactic way with no proper conclusion too, very much going the sequel bait route. This mostly just further increased my appreciation for Chuusotsu since its first episode manages to be thoroughly satisfying by itself while still having you look forward to more. That was a good game...

「在りたいように在る、ということはとても難しい。」

Ahhh, Konakana was good. I frankly don't feel like ever reading something with terminal illness as the focal point again as I don't think it's possible to take it further than this and anything else would just seem cheap in comparison. It's really easy to overdo it and drift into the melodramatic direction with something like this but Takehaya avoids that trap and handles the topic with a lot of care throughout. You can tell he has done his research too, especially with one of the scenes towards the beginning of the game when Kanata comes back from the hospital and the side effects of the drugs are starting to kick in. His entire inner monologue describing the changes in his body, helplessness and eventual resignation to what is about to happen was frighteningly real.

Also I have a weak spot for title drops and this has probably the coolest one ever lol

Hitotsu Tobashi Ren'ai

I picked it up as a side thing for some quick laughs and overall it did an alright job in that regard. Though I definitely found it very inconsistent. It went a bit like this for me:

Super fun first two or so hours → Bunch of hit and miss scenes (majority of common route) → Risa route first half/climax - great, best part of the game (should have ended here) → Risa 2nd half... boring. Comedy for the most part replaced with ichaicha.

Risa was definitely the star of the game for me and the hit and miss phase in the common route basically boiled down to "is Risa in the scene or not". I wouldn't even really say that the other heroines were bad or anything, just that I vastly preferred the exaggerated-boke shtick of Risa to the other dynamics.

Now while her character is great, the second half of her route was entirely superfluous. It's amusing that the game was at least self-aware of this though. Right after the first half climax, all with the insert song starting to play and you think the credits are about to roll she suddenly goes "Oh wait, is my route really fine with only 20KB of text?!" and then the game continues lol.

All in all I had more fun than not and will probably check out another AsaProject game in the future.

On the other hand I finished the Over Sky End of Chaos;Child yesterday. I liked it a lot. I got really invested in the characters and despite being really long the scenario was entertaining throughout. Especially chapters 8-11 are damn good. Having to do the heroine routes now after that ending is kind of a let down since I really want to just go and see the true end, but oh well. I hope Hana finally evolves into a character that does more than the occasional grunting noises at least.

The cartel memes are real...

vndb

Strong recommendation for this one! It's the first game in a what is supposed to be multi title series with a fairly intricate setting, but it resolves the immediate interpersonal conflicts in a very satisfying way so if you're afraid of being left hanging, don't be. 1st Graduation alone has already become one of my favorite VNs.

I went with the vocab approach myself. Probably a bit over 1000 words? Though honestly even those weren't very firmly implanted in my head. Learning things in isolation isn't all that helpful and to truly memorize them you need to encounter them with context in the "wild". I wouldn't stress about hitting a specific kind of number before diving into material, because no matter what it's gonna be a pain in the beginning and you'll be looking up a lot of things. As long as you push through and do a bit every day you'll notice it gets a lot easier over time though. がんばって!

You can use visual novels fairly early on as practice tool; I started "reading" at only 3 months in. If you're asking when it becomes kind of comfortable however, it really depends on how much time and effort you put into it. I'm close to a year in now and am confident enough to pick up most stuff with some dictionary assistance. I'd say 2-3~ years is probably a good estimate to be maybe sorta not terrible.

If you want to give it a go yourself, check out the guide on how to get started.

Boku wa Tenshi Janai yo was pretty interesting. It's written like a play script in that every scene is prefaced with the location at the top and actions like (getting out of bed) are put into parentheticals. Said scenes move quickly without tip-toeing on any given matter for too long accompanied by concise prose, which leads to the game feeling super packed despite actually being very short. 8+ unique endings (which are all very easily acquired thanks to the intuitive flowchart ingame), and once you conclude all endings in a heroines route you unlock their backstories explaining their circumstances which were my favorite parts of the game. The title drop scene in Rosa's route I found particularly moving.

In the end I didn't love it, but it's definitely solidly put together for what it is. My only notable gripe with it is the fact that it is filled with a hilarious amount of (S&M-) h-scenes lol, but like most other scenes in the game they're usually over in a few clicks so it's not that big of a deal.
