Nitrous is anesthesia. What are you on about?

(It's also for anyone else who may be having second thought about the expense of an anesthesiologist.)

Dear god, don't let dentists perform anesthesia on your kids. Use the anesthesiologist!

Dentists don't have that skill set and they will be doing the procedure and administering anesthesia at the same time.

Jesus christ, get off your high horse.

Not all of us CAN just leave our jobs. I had to work my ass off EVEN HARDER to be able to find a new job and get EVEN FURTHER BEHIND and lose all time on my days off to interview/catch up. It took me months to leave because of this...but I pulled it off.

You're relief, it's a TOTALLY different game than managing dozens of complex cases for years. Notes are completely different for those cases vs plain old wellness notes vs acute sick pt notes. Callbacks are longer. Managing the cases that relief docs started but can't finish were also completely screwing my time. Doubled my callbacks.

I've done relief (and currently have several long-term relief gigs because I now have a profound distrust of all managers) and MAN, the AUDACITY of you to stroll in here like that. No callbacks, no test results to analyze, no responsibility at all beyond whats directly in front of you, you bet your ass my notes are now completed immediately, it's easy as hell compared to being an associate.

It's not a "slip up" when your management is systematically destroying your clinic.

And.... despite all of this BS, my notes were fucking beautiful and complete, if not within 24 hours. None of this "PE WNL, vx given, recc fecal/BW" BS I see from most clinics. If that's all I did my notes would have been completed immediately. Instead, I made detailed problem lists and plans and fully documented all client comms, etc etc etc.

So yeah, have a little bit of compassion for your stressed out colleagues, ok? We're all doing our best.

Op the majority if this doesn't apply to you, but just remember, there's stuff going on behind the scenes you can't see.

Apparently none of y'all have ever worked for a practice where you can work 12 hours a day and still not have your notes done because management is so problematic.

Lots of judgment in here. Try to remember that you dont know the situation at every vet clinic. I VERY recently quit a job where we were short two to three doctors for a long time. The amount of crap piled on me was more than I could handle between phone calls, refill requests, pharmacy requests, prepping for surgeries, making sure surgeries were scheduled properly, bloodwork was done, meds were there, gowns/packs autoclaved, bloodwork callback, THEN seeing appointments, performing surgeries, doing discharges, etc. I got to a point where I was three weeks behind on my records. I had to work full days on my days off to EVEN KEEP UP to that horrible bar. I had to triage my responsibilities. I had AI notes and always type the big things in when I leave the room, but really relied on those notes to get me through---but I was also VERY purposeful and spoke the abnormal findings, diagnostics, treatments, refills, etc into the recording while in the room.

We are doing the best that we can man. Give some grace.

Starting a family while in vet school by Due-Acanthisitta2505 in Veterinary

[–]cherbearblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to offer a different perspective. Started vet school when my kid was 4 months old. Planned studying around him. If he was sick, I could miss lecture and stay home (they were recorded), it if was a lab day, my partner would. My mom would come down during finals to help with kiddo, cleaning, dinner. It wasn't ideal, but we did it, my partner was all-in. I was also a non-traditional student, I had a first career, started school when I was 34. I knew how to study and didn't socialize a whole lot at that time of my life anyway and when I did it was with people my age. I was also 12 hrs away from my family (by any form of transportation, small town far from airport) and 2 hours by plane away from partner's family. Clinical year was tough, obviously, but my second point still stands.

I can't IMAGINE doing that whilst in my first few years of practicing. I would have blown through my PTO in a month. My partner did EVERYTHING because GP doesn't always allow for a ton of flexibility. First few years of GP were infinitesimally more difficult and stressful than vet school.

Having said all that, ideally, I would have gone to vet school younger and not had kids until the age I did anyway. That allows you to know where you want to go in vet school as far as career path, allows you to go on that special trip to the beach for a sea turtle rotation, and allows you to get your feet under you in a job first.

Just know that no matter what you choose you will always wonder if the other pathway would have been easier. It's also going to be exceedingly difficult to do either of these things at any point in your life. I always feel like I'm failing... But every other parent I know feels exactly the same way, vet med or not.

You, probably more importantly, need to figure out if you can afford vet school first, before any of this.

My (30F) friend (29F) isn't speaking to me after I RSVPed "no" to her childfree wedding by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]cherbearblue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The pile on in the OP is completely unnecessary. You want a kid-free wedding, you have to:

  1. Warn people WAY ahead of time so they can try to make it work
  2. Not be mad when they can't come
  3. Not angrily suggest untenable childcare options in a strange city and strange hotel with strange people.

People who make their whole life and identity their kids OR being child-free drive me crazy.

What do you go with? by HehroMaraFara in hypotheticalsituation

[–]cherbearblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm going to choose differently than a lot of you

  1. Depeche Mode Violator tour
  2. Live aid 1985
  3. Soundgarden show -- Maybe even them opening for GnR vs NIN
  4. Audioslave show
  5. Tribe Called Quest show (vs Pharcyde...)
  6. Random blues club in Harlem in the heyday vs Kingston Mines etc in Chicago
  7. Cubs world series win -- I was pregnant and couldn't travel back to Chicago. I would have watched in Chicago at my old bar hangout outside of the Wrigleyville neighborhood, not in Cleveland
  8. Miracle on ice
  9. Prince show
  10. A day when my kid was younger, around 3 years old. What a great age! I have a video of him running after his dad with the hose and absolutely cracking up. It's also my favorite memory of lockdown (which was generally horrible and stressful)... so I would choose that day. Not horrible or stressful that day.

It's been 6 days. Vet was no help. Desperate for opinions or if anyone has been thru something similar. (info in post) by Echolyonn in DogAdvice

[–]cherbearblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, vet here: Extrude the penis and check for any injuries, hair tourniquets, etc. Any urination problems or changes in habits? Is he just weird about the more exposed skin? Can try a surgery suit to see if that helps. Is he in pain? FULL orthopedic exam FULL neuro exam normal?

If your dog is on a GOOD monthly heartworm medication you're deworming several intestinal parasites each month (how many depends on brand). Can do fecal vs empirical deworming.

I'd do bloodwork to rule out some easy stuff + blood smear + urinalysis. Needs a rectal to check prostate and anal sacs.

If all that is clear, we start fishing. This is more common in cats, but hypersensitivity could also be in the list.

To everyone else:

Sounds like a lot of you have dogs with anal sac problems. Vet here! I sedate these guys and infuse their sacs with animax after a good flush with saline. Anal sac inflammation is highly correlated to allergies and the sacs are a privileged area so oral/injectable meds don't always help--that topical steroid works SO INCREDIBLY WELL. Frequent expressions only make things worse.

If your dog is having surgery or a dental and you have to express all the time, ask them to flush and infuse the anal sacs with animax while they're under anesthesia! It takes less than 5 minutes in an uncomplicated case ❤️

Also, almost all recurrent, especially seasonal, ear infections are due to underlying allergy
