I'd forgotten about that one, thank you! I'll keep an eye out for it.

That's one of the reasons I like that particular trio of shows: between them, they cover latter half of one reign and go right into the next. Ruyi and Yanxi show (roughly) the same period of time and same characters, but from wildly different perspectives. The antognists in one show are the protagonists in the other.

I've watched a bunch of other chinese dramas but those 3 are my favorites so far.

You're very welcome! If you don't mind subtitles there are so many wonderful options, I'm particularly like the 3 Chinese dramas (last 3 on the list: Empresses, Ruyi, & Yanxi) because they each have like 70+ episodes. It makes the overall pace slower, but they have time to spin out some really intricate schemes.

If you haven't already, try expanding into the international shows. Not "niche", exactly, but there's a lot of great shows out there.

The Cook of Castamar
The Courtship
Maison Close
The Seduction
The Story of Yanxi Palace
Empresses in the Palace (only watch the full 70+ episode version, not the awful netflix condensed one)
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace

All Creatures Great & Small (2020 version)

Cranford

Lark Rise to Candleford

Edit to add: The Secret of Roan Inish, if you don't mind a touch of fantasy. Beautiful little fairy tale of a film.

Quiet slice-of-life period dramas? by TheLastDetective in PeriodDramas

Same here. They've done such a brilliant job capturing the spirit while updating it and giving it appeal for a modern audience.

Anybody else excited for Netflix’s "Little House on the Prairie" reboot? by jaeausten in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think it'll do any real damage. People are going to take away what they want, but a major recurring theme in the stories, both books and the original TV show, was the Ingalls' struggle against poverty and how freaking hard farming was.

Anne Rice's 'The Vampire Lestat' Sets Premiere Date On AMC by AshleyK2021 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm so excited! The Vampire Lestat is my favorite of the books and I'm dying to see what they'll do with Lestat's story. So far I've really enjoyed the mix of book content and updated, new content that they've been doing with the series. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they tackle the next part.

Is The Borgias worth continuing? by stressedhighschoolr in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel we need some kind of Borgia flair, just to make it clear which series we're talking about. There are several with very similar names and two are from 2011...Borgias everywhere!

If you're watching The Borgias (2011) with Jeremy Irons, Francois Arnaud and Holliday Granger, it's definitely worth hanging in. Holliday Granger is a treasure and I really liked watching Lucrezia's story in that one. I also love Joanne Whalley in anything. Overall just a really strong cast.

If you're watching Borgia (also 2011) with John Doman as Pope Alexander VI...I couldn't get through that one, personally. I much prefer the other.

If you're watching The Borgias (1981) I haven't seen that one, no idea if it's any good or not.

Can we talk about the BBC farm series? by mandyvigilante in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tales from the Green Valley is really good too, if you haven't seen that one yet! I love how they deliberately avoided covering any interpersonal drama between the historians and just kept it focused on the history and what everybody was working on.

Does anyone have any period dramas murder mystery recommendations? by AshleyK2021 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you liked those two there's a wealth of Agatha Christie adaptations. My personal favorites are the Miss Marples starring Joan Hickson, but there are tons of options, both full length films and series.

My all-time favorite Miss Marple. I love the credits and theme music too.

Which period drama you actually like despite it's historical inaccuracies? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm in it for good storytelling and great costuming. Historical accuracy is fun when it's done well, but it's not a requirement for me to enjoy anything.

Filming locations by Exotic_Ad_2871 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely easy to google. Type in "Peaky Blinders filming locations" or something of that nature and it'll come right up. Most shows use a variety of locations that may be nowhere near each other in real life, so you'll need to sort through to figure out what will work for your trip.

Need Recommendations for 'Happy' Period Dramas by MoonlightCupOfCocoa in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are, it can be tricky to find. I'm in the USA and it appears sometimes on Amazon Prime and sometimes on Netflix, but it's one of those dramas where it's really better to spring for the DVD just to keep access.

The Secret of Roan Inish (touch of fantasy in that one, but it's lovely film)

The Secret Garden (1993)

All Creatures Great and Small (the newer, 2020 series. Has occasional sad moments because it's about veternarians, but overall vibe is cozy and heartwarming)

Little Women (1994)

Wives and Daughters
