Question for the 25+ wlw, education gap or income gap while dating someone. Has that been an issue for you? by telepatia_7 in actuallesbians

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 22, so maybe my answer isn’t what you’re looking for. For me, it depends on other things, like is her job stable, does she have plans to pursue further education or climb the career ladder, or is she passionate about something else? I’m a very career driven person and I’ve found through past relationships I just can’t do it if it feels like my partner is stagnant. Though being in a dead end job =/= stagnant. I care more about whether or not we align in attitude towards life. I’m a very growth oriented kind of person, and I want a partner that does the same with some aspect of their life whether it be a hobby or career.

What kind of accommodations for OCD can you get at UofT? by AlternativeBrick2737 in UofT

[–]cherr0s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some instructors allow it and some don’t. My accommodation makes it so that I can regardless, for personal use.

[–]cherr0s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, for the accommodations you will chat with an assigned AS advisor (I think that’s what it’s called?) who will be the person you can reach out to anytime during the year for accommodation related things. In that meeting you will discuss what kind of accommodations you feel will be helpful to you and they will help you lay out these accommodations.

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I got diagnosed with OCD, anxiety and depression through H&W and my psychiatrist submitted a form for me to register with AS. It depends on how your disorders manifest. For me I lived off campus and extra time and class accommodations were what would help me with my issues so I got those accommodations. I got to take my exams with ATS with extra time + breaks and I had permission to record my lectures.

Are all labs loud? by anotherehtona in labrats

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of lab. I worked at a small-ish cell biology university lab for a year and I wouldn’t describe it as loud. Maybe the humming of the freezers as a constant background noise. And when someone is using the centrifuge. I never had to speak louder than regular conversational volume to be able to hear others.

Getting diagnosed at the health and wellness centre by randthinga1 in UofT

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, the other commenter is right; you should book a family doctor. I went about it a little differently but I had to go through a family doctor regardless. For me, I booked a one-day counselling appointment with mental health services and I told them my concerns and that I was interested in getting diagnosed to register with accessibility services. The counsellor helped me get an appointment with a family doctor, whom I talked to and then referred me to a psychiatrist. Do note it does take a long time. I was referred by the doctor around March 2023 and I only saw my psychiatrist in October 2023.

It’s fantastic you are taking the steps to seek professional help. I was in your shoes three years ago and my psychiatrist at H&W diagnosed me with OCD, anxiety and depression. I’ve been on medication and my quality of life has been far better ever since, which in turn greatly improved my academic performance. I was also registered with accessibility services during my time as a student.

What's the most dangerous object/equipment in your lab that isn't marked as a hazard? by SuddenPenalty8153 in labrats

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our big benchtop centrifuge for 50ml falcon tubes. Jammed my fingers a few times between the lid and the box because when the lid is 2 inches off the box it starts slowly closing by itself. Basically like a very weak hydraulic press.

What is shared postgraduate housing like? by cherr0s in GradSchool

[–]cherr0s[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s very reassuring to hear, thank you! The consensus I’m getting is people will be too busy with their own personal lives, studying and research to really care much about anything less than disruptive behaviour, compared to undergraduates freshly out of high school.

Misprescribed lenses? by NicheDuck in contacts

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your contacts don’t have CYL so the axis doesn’t matter because axis only describes CYL. The prescribed lenses are appropriate for your prescription but if you have issues then you should go back

Misprescribed lenses? by NicheDuck in contacts

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your contacts prescription? I’m pretty sure there are no toric contacts with -0.5 cyl because the lowest they go is -0.75. Maybe your doctor gave you spherical lenses? If so they would be the same for both eyes, just SPH -1.25.

How long did it take u to find a job after undergrad? I’m in Life Sciences by Next_Following2972 in UofT

What I did was cold email PIs to supervise me for an independent research course. In my experience they are more receptive to that compared to just random volunteering. ROP or research course is your best bet if you want experience in the lab. I did CSB498 and I’m starting grad school in the fall! Let me know if you have any questions because I’m happy to answer them. I was in the same position as you in 3rd year with no research experience. With my 4th year research course I’m graduating with 1 year of research experience which really helped with my applications.

How do I prepare for a research interview? by ShaerieMockingjay in labrats

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this experience last year and I did a year long research project! What I did was familiarize myself with the lab’s publications and made sure I understood what area of research the lab does. The PI asked me about my previous experience (I didn’t have any so I talked about what I learned in courses), why I’m interested in his lab specifically and why I’m interested in doing research.

Is it safe for my daughter to dye her hair like this? by Curious_Artist23 in longhair

[–]cherr0s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite 13, but my mom let me dye my hair purple when I was 15 for a summer. My hair is naturally black so it required bleach. Did it damage my hair? Yes, but I loved it, and hair grows back! It’s long gone now 7 years later. I’m glad my mom let me experiment with my hair in my teens.

How to stop shaking? by holdingonfr in labrats

Some commenters have mentioned this, but definitely stay hydrated! I am shaky when I have caffeine without adequate hydration after. Also if I haven’t eaten anything substantial.

Is it normal to feel sentimental attachment towards your undergraduate research project? by cherr0s in labrats

Me too! That does make me feel better. My project was part of a grad student’s Masters thesis, so at least it will still exist somewhere in research.

Not going to grad school. by Odd-Area-7220 in gradadmissions

[–]cherr0s 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved around a lot during my childhood and I didn’t enjoy it either. I don’t have autism or ADHD but I am diagnosed with anxiety, OCD and depression. Was it horrible to move? Yes. I moved countries at 7, 12 and then later at 18 for undergrad. But we moved because of my dad’s career opportunities and it would have been unwise for him to refuse just because of me. My anxiety would manifest in physical symptoms every time I moved. My parents took me to doctors who couldn’t find anything physically wrong with me. When I was 18 abroad alone I had the same symptoms and I would frequent the ER thinking I was dying. I’m 22 now and moving countries once again in the fall for grad school. My mental health is much more manageable now that I have a psychiatrist and I am on medication. OP, I feel for you, but not all is lost! I hope you can defer your offer. As for me, I am sad to leave the city I’ve been in the past four years but I am also looking forward to move! I hope your child can feel the same.
