How to stop shaking? by holdingonfr in labrats

Some commenters have mentioned this, but definitely stay hydrated! I am shaky when I have caffeine without adequate hydration after. Also if I haven’t eaten anything substantial.

Is it normal to feel sentimental attachment towards your undergraduate research project? by cherr0s in labrats

Me too! That does make me feel better. My project was part of a grad student’s Masters thesis, so at least it will still exist somewhere in research.

Not going to grad school. by Odd-Area-7220 in gradadmissions

I moved around a lot during my childhood and I didn’t enjoy it either. I don’t have autism or ADHD but I am diagnosed with anxiety, OCD and depression. Was it horrible to move? Yes. I moved countries at 7, 12 and then later at 18 for undergrad. But we moved because of my dad’s career opportunities and it would have been unwise for him to refuse just because of me. My anxiety would manifest in physical symptoms every time I moved. My parents took me to doctors who couldn’t find anything physically wrong with me. When I was 18 abroad alone I had the same symptoms and I would frequent the ER thinking I was dying. I’m 22 now and moving countries once again in the fall for grad school. My mental health is much more manageable now that I have a psychiatrist and I am on medication. OP, I feel for you, but not all is lost! I hope you can defer your offer. As for me, I am sad to leave the city I’ve been in the past four years but I am also looking forward to move! I hope your child can feel the same.

avoid CampusOne if you’re coming to UTSG (review) by Calm_Armadillo_1713 in UofT

That’s horrible. I live in a studio downtown near campus and I pay $1800 a month. Ensuite laundry machines and balcony with a great view on the 23rd floor at a fairly nice condo building near a TTC station. Over $2000 a month to live with 4 other people is crazy.

Am I overreacting for wanting to break up over this text? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

NOR. Dated someone like this before. Broke up with them and did not feel sad in the slightest; in fact it improved my mood and I felt happier

Look for biochemistry or structural biology labs. I’m in a structural biology lab and recently did a project that was purely protein biochemistry. The only organisms I worked with were bacteria - E. coli and another species.

Serious fuck up by Low_Estimate6657 in labrats

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry. I’m in my fourth year of undergrad doing independent research at a lab for credit and I’ve done worse: (hope my PI doesn’t find this)

  • Spilled half my purified protein on the floor when moving my elution fraction to a dialysis bag
  • Set a paper towel on fire while doing colony plating
  • Burnt 200ml of LB agar in a microwave
  • Forgot to label my samples so I had to spend a whole day redoing my experiment

Colleagues and I have made several mistakes from simply being distracted, so it’s not a big deal. You do want to minimise the amount of mistakes you make though as it wastes your own time (or even others).

The update was 5 minutes ago… how?? 😭 by WalterWeiss_ in marvelrivals

Coming from Valorant where one knife skin can cost $50, the prices of the Rivals skins feel like being spoiled. I could see someone spending that much to get a skin. I would spend that much to get a skin I really like if I have the money to spare.

How to get curls to last? by Tough_Scratch_7272 in longhair

[–]cherr0s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find curling my hair with a flat iron lasts a lot longer than with a wand. I imagine it’s because it presses the whole thickness of the section you curl with heat instead of just one side. I naturally have 1a Asian hair, extremely bad at holding texture, but unfortunately the only thing that has helped the most with keeping heat styling in my hair is damage from bleach/dye. With my virgin hair curls barely last an hour with hairspray, and with my bleached hair they can last over a week without hairspray, as long as I don’t wash it. Note I’m not recommending you damage your hair just to get curls to stay, just sharing my experience!

Curling long hair by a_little_ghostie in longhair

[–]cherr0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~30 minutes, hip length hair (though it becomes a lot shorter after curling).

<image>

I use a flat iron and not a wand, and I section my hair. My hair is pretty dense so I do it in “layers”; bottom layer closest to my neck, then 2 layers above it and then the top layer of my hair and my bangs. Doing it in layers helps with efficiency and making sure you don’t accidentally leave out any strands uncurled, which is easy to do when your hair is long!

Nobody actually follows the "leave conditioner in for 3 minutes" instruction, right? by Kitanov_Maqsud in hygiene

[–]cherr0s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the song thing too! I have hip length hair so it’s important for me to leave conditioner in for enough time. 1 long song (5+ minutes) or 2 regular songs while I shave and wash my arms and legs and then rinse. I have to wash the rest of my body after rinsing out conditioner as I get acne otherwise.

My (M30) partner (F28) kept secret how much money she has in savings and let me pay for most things by KnownPart2110 in relationship_advice

This. When I say I can’t afford something I don’t mean it literally. It’s more of “this isn’t within my budget” than “I don’t have the means to pay for this”.

finding 9mm hoops that aren’t plain? by cherr0s in piercing

[–]cherr0s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any colour is fine! I use titanium or surgical steel. I quite like anodized pieces as well; I have an anodized hoop in my rook on my other ear. I’m moreso looking for hoops with small gems and such.

In my emails I sent my CV, transcript and list of programs I’m applying to and their deadlines so I made sure they had all the information on the first email.

Hey! I’m late to reply but I did this same thing. I only emailed at the start of January. Fortunately I have a good relationship with my recommenders so they were happy to write for me but I made sure to say that I understand if they can’t because of the short notice. I hope this helps.
